You've Been Warned

It’s August.

There are no rules.

Only heat and desperation.

Let’s party!

Fire In The Sky

Daniels Energy Special Customer Savings News

“Fire Rainbows” or “rainbow clouds” are neither fire, nor rainbows, but are so called because of their brilliant pastel colors and flame like appearance.

Technically they are known as circumhorizontal arc - an ice halo formed by hexagonal, plate-shaped ice crystals in high level cirrus clouds. The halo is so large that the arc appears parallel to the horizon, hence the name.

They occur mostly during the summer and between particular latitudes. When the sun is very high in the sky, sunlight entering flat, hexagon shaped ice crystals gets split into individual colors just like in a prism.

The conditions required to form a “fire rainbow” is very precise – the sun has to be at an elevation of 58° or greater, there must be high altitude cirrus clouds with the aforementioned ice crystals, and sunlight has to enter the ice crystals at a specific angle.

What Goes Around

In 1892 at Stanford University, an 18-year-old student was struggling to pay his fees. He was an orphan, and not knowing where to turn for money, he came up with a bright idea. He and a friend decided to host a musical concert on campus to raise money for their education.

They reached out to the great pianist Ignacy J. Paderewski.

His manager demanded a guaranteed fee of $2,000 for the piano recital. A deal was struck. The big day arrived. But unfortunately, they had not managed to sell enough tickets. The total collection was only $1,600. Disappointed, they went to Paderewski and explained their plight.

They gave him the entire $1,600, plus a cheque for the balance $400. They promised to honor the cheque at the soonest possible.

“No,” said Paderewski. “This is not acceptable.” He tore up the cheque, returned the $1,600 and told the two boys: “Here’s the $1600. Please deduct whatever expenses you have incurred. Keep the money you need for your fees. And just give me whatever is left”.

The boys were surprised and thanked him profusely. It was a small act of kindness. But it clearly marked out Paderewski as a great human being.

Paderewski later went on to become the Prime Minister of Poland. He was a great leader, but unfortunately when the World War began, Poland was ravaged. There were more than 1.5 million people starving in his country, and no money to feed them.

Paderewski reached out to the US Food and Relief Administration for help. He heard there was a man called Herbert Hoover — who agreed to help and quickly shipped tons of food grains to feed the starving Polish people.

Paderewski was relieved.

He decided to go America to meet Hoover and personally thank him. When Paderewski began to thank Hoover for his noble gesture, Hoover quickly interjected and said, “You shouldn’t be thanking me Mr. Prime Minister. You may not remember this, but several years ago, you helped two young students go through college. I was one of them.”

A Fish Story

Daniels Energy Special Customer Savings News

This pike was caught on the 6th of March 2006 by Dutch fisherman Ewout Blom in a big lake in the south of Holland.

For the metric-impaired (such as yours truly), 127cm and 19.4 kilos works out to right around 50 inches, and just barely shy of 43 pounds.

Lot of good eating here!

Lone Ranger

Daniels Energy Special Customer Savings News

Bass Reeves (1838 – 1910), one of the first African American Deputy U.S. Marshals west of the Mississippi River, arrested over 3,000 felons and shot and killed fourteen outlaws in self-defense.

He was the inspiration for the fictional character, The Lone Ranger.

After fighting in the Civil War for the Union, Reeves was initially assigned as a Deputy U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Arkansas, which also had responsibility a huge area known as “Indian Territory”, where he worked for 32 years.

Reeves brought in some of the most dangerous criminals of the time, but was never wounded, despite having his hat and belt shot off on separate occasions. Like the Lone Ranger, Reeves on many occasions rode posse with only one man, a Native American. Sometimes, you just don’t need to make this stuff up – it’s all right there in history!
