We enter May with optimism on our shoulder.
And why not? We begin our 91st year of serving thousands of our customers. And we are delighted to say that each month more than 3500 of you open this newsletter and at least 8 of you read the whole thing!
We do sincerely thank you all for your continued support over the years and we hope to highlight one or two of our longest-served customers in the coming months. In the meantime we will say that Jackie D, while never having travelled to Pamukkale, Turkey was able to identify the shimmering blue waterfalls in last month's quiz. For all the others who got the correct answer - we thank you for playing and hope that you'll leap in again in this month's quiz.
We hope that May brings you flowers and sunshine and good health.

So many of us wonder, "how that guy's brain works." Maybe he passed you on the right going 94 mph or just somehow decided she'd walk to the front of the line at the DMV. Well, here's a little illustration of how the brain works - when it works!

90 Years!
We made it. 90 fun-filled, ups and downs in the coal, kerosene, fuel oil, propane, heating and cooling business! Started by our grandfather, Sicilian-born Dominick Daniele, who gave up his hat selling business to bring coal and oil to area homes, through four generations, we've worked to keep our customers cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
We're proud to have accomplished this - but we know that we couldn't have done it without you. Your patronage - your loyalty means the world to us and we promise that we will never take it for granted. We're not planning a big party just now. Maybe, when we hit the century mark. Circle your calendars - April 2026 there's going to be a huge celebration!

Everyone likes an Oreo.
However, artist Judith Klausner likes "working" with Oreos. She carves intricate cameos of men and women on to the icing of an Oreo. Too much time on her hands or inventive artist? You decide. Me, I'm sticking to licking!

Dinner & A Movie
Sometimes the simplest meals are the best. So, make a bowl of Bucatini with butter, pepper and cheese and head to Netflix for Cinema Paradiso - a filmmaker remembers his childhood, when he fell in love with movies and developed a deep friendship with the theater's projectionist. Simply a magical film. Guaranteed.
Yield: 4 to 6 servings
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes
INGREDIENTS
1 pound dried bucatini pasta
1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more for garnish
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
4 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1 cup freshly grated Pecorino Romano cheese, plus more for garnish
Kosher salt, to taste
DIRECTIONS
1.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the bucatini and cook until just al dente, 8 to 9 minutes. Drain, reserving 1¼ cup of pasta water.
2. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, toast the ground pepper over medium heat until fragrant, 30 seconds. Add 4 tablespoons of the butter and the olive oil, and cook until the butter has melted, 1 to 2 minutes.
3. Add the drained pasta, 1 cup of the reserved pasta water, the grated Parmesan and Pecorino Romano. Toss to coat the pasta well and season with salt. Add the remaining ¼ cup of reserved pasta water and tablespoon of butter, tossing to incorporate. Transfer to a platter and garnish with ground pepper and Pecorino Romano cheese.
Then serve.

Salvatore Dali may not be everyone's favorite Avant gard artist, but you have to give the guy credit. He was astonishingly prolific and now many of his later works - 1970's - are on display at the New Britain Museum of American Art.
This is a show that is not to be missed. Seriously. OK, it's bizarre and crazy and unique but then that's just exactly who Dali was. A surrealist in an often surreal world. Here's a link to the show - we recommend it for those of you who often dream of melting clocks.

Our Towns
Deep River
Originally founded as the Saybrook Colony in 1644, the portion of the original colony east of the Connecticut River became a separate town in 1665. The area, west of the river, that is the present day village, was owned by the Kirtland family as early as 1723.
The village of Winthrop was said to have been settled by Baptists as early as 1729. In the early to mid-19th century, various portions of Saybrook broke off as separate towns, starting from Chester in 1836 to Old Saybrook in 1854. In 1947, the town of Saybrook changed its name to "Deep River", matching the name of the town center village.
For 100 years, Deep River, CT was the site of ivory trade. From 1840 to 1940, much of the ivory that was delivered to the "Queen of the Valley," as Deep River was known, thanks to an ivory lathe that local inventor Phineas Pratt developed. In the 1860s a rival company, Comstock, Cheney & Co. was established in Ivoryton.
Today, a few more than 4600 people call Deep River home and Deep River is actually part of the "Tri-Town Area" which includes Chester and Essex.
And here is a story of the bandit XYZ who attempted to rob a Deep River Bank.
NOT a good idea.

OK, is that a hum that you are hearing? A deep, rumbling sound? Not the tinnitus sound that is high-pitched and pretty constant, but an occasional unnerving sound that you can hear, but that others can't.
I'm not talking about the Moodus Noises...I'm here to tell you about
- THE HUM.
