Announcing Our 2020 Hatfield Scholar, Bethany Woods!

The annual
Hatfield Architectural Award
honors a current Oregon architecture student for their commitment to community service and design excellence. We are thrilled to announce Bethany Woods, University of Oregon as our 2020 Hatfield Scholar!
Bethany has a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design and History Minor from George Fox University, and is currently working toward her Master of Architecture degree at University of Oregon. She is active and engaged in community organizations including Habitat for Humanity and Medical Teams International, and has extensive experience serving communities of diverse cultural backgrounds and needs. Her impressive service experience includes traveling to the Tōhoku region in Japan to help rebuild after the 2011 earthquake, working with members of the Navajo Nation, service trips to Fresno to assist Laotian refugees, teaching math to low-income third graders, and more. As stated in her application essay,
“
I have chosen to focus my education and career on the use of architecture to address social issues. Architecture and the provision of shelter can transform lives, and I am excited to work alongside others to make a social impact in building stronger sustainable communities.
”

A Tribute to G.Z. Charlie Brown
|
|
Architect and UO Architecture Professor, G.Z. Charlie Brown, passed on February 15, 2020 at the age of 77.
Former AFO President, Kent Duffy FAIA, reflects on his time working with Charlie.
"
I had the privilege of collaborating with Charlie for twenty years and It was a treat to see his eyes light up when we were facing what seemed like a particularly daunting challenge. I came to think of him as someone who took great joy in revealing possibilities. Time after time he would demonstrate a key bit of information in such a compelling way that, first of all, you would understand it in depth, and second, you would be inspired for your project to demonstrate that concept at work. Whether it was with his students, the researchers in the lab or practitioners he was collaborating with, his goal was to transform that daunting challenge into an amazing success story of the project. It was thought provoking work and he loved it, and we loved how good he was at it. I am really going to miss him, and I am never going to forget him.

What project are you working on right now that you're excited about?
My job is to look to the future for business, and two projects have me excited. The Broadway Corridor and the Riverplace Redevelopment projects will change the face of our city by establishing new neighborhoods, offering more housing, and creating green spaces. PCI builds as much of our framing and drywall scope as possible in our off-site manufacturing facility. With prefab finally catching on in our industry, these projects offer a wonderful chance to collaborate early with the design team using the prefab filter.
What inspired you to become a member of AFO?
I have been in the construction world for 30 years and always enjoyed working with architects because I don't have that creative gene. AFO is great way to follow the architectural community and Architects in Schools is an amazing program. The Honored Citizen Dinner is a special event that never disappoints and I am always excited to be able to show respect for those that paved the road for all of us. I hope that through AFO, as an industry member, I can help bring ideas and experience to the design of our city.
What is your favorite building, park or place in Oregon?
I have always loved the Portland building. It is visually interesting and even entertaining, I think it was unfortunate that Michael Graves was made the scapegoat when it opened. Even though it is controversial, I am glad that it has been reinvigorated and repurposed to meet the original design intent by caring people that share my affection for the building.
