Stay Safe From the Cold This Winter

Everyone is at risk during cold weather. In temperatures of -15oC or colder, unprotected skin can freeze in less than 30 minutes and the risk of developing hypothermia is high.

To prevent injuries, including hypothermia and frostbite, wear several layers of clothing with an outer layer that protects you from both wind and wetness. Make sure to cover any exposed skin using hats, scarves, neck warmers, mittens, and/or face masks, and always wear waterproof winter boots. Bring an extra pair of socks with you for any outdoor activities.

A cold alert is issued when temperatures are expected to drop below -15oC, without wind chill. Grand Erie Public Health works together with various community agencies to ensure that emergency accommodation is available during extreme cold.

Food banks and other local resources are ready to help you through the winter with food and clothing.

Respiratory Etiquette & You

For more information on respiratory etiquette, please visit the link below.

Learn More

January is peak respiratory illness season in Ontario. With influenza, COVID-19, RSV, and the common cold on the rise, it is important that we all participate in good respiratory etiquette.

Cover your cough and sneeze: Turn your head away from others and cover your mouth or nose with a tissue, or upper sleeve if necessary. Never cough or sneeze into your hands.

Practice effective hand hygiene: Thoroughly clean your hands with soap and warm water regularly for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing or sneezing.

Wear a mask to protect others: When you are sick, wearing a mask can help prevent the spread of infection.

Environmental cleaning: Disinfecting high touch surfaces and cleaning shared spaces can also prevent the spread of germs.

Supporting Parents and Caregivers for Stronger Futures

Parents and caregivers play a vital role in fostering the safe, supportive relationships that children need for a strong future.

While raising children brings purpose and connection, it also comes with challenges that can contribute to stress and mental health concerns. Supporting parents and caregivers is essential to help them navigate these challenges and continue providing the foundation for their children's well-being.

Dr. Rebecca Comley, Grand Erie Public Health Acting Medical Officer of Health, weighs in with tips and reminders on the impact of the well-being of children by supporting the people who do the hard work of raising them.
