Great news!!!
Last week, Governor Brown officially signed SB 862, the Budget bill that contains $10M specifically allocated to grants for services for victims of human trafficking. This means that the Human Trafficking Assistance Fund, which WTLC received funding from last year, will not lapse. We hope to apply for available opportunities next year to continue our work with survivors of human trafficking.

This year’s allocation in the state budget is a
significant victory
because this fund was initially cut and then reinstated in the same legislative cycle. WTLC and many other partnering agencies faced a tough uphill battle, but our diligent advocacy efforts urging our legislators to support this bill was successful. Our collective voice made this reinstatement of funding possible.
If you want to learn more regarding our services for human trafficking survivors – feel free to reach out. Also, I hope to see you at our 3/4 Time: Dueling Pianos for WTLC Event on October 4

A Mother's Love: A Struggle for Reunification
Laughter radiated the halls as Evelyn and her roommate walked to their first Personal Empowerment Program (PEP) class together. Evelyn sat comfortably, wearing a vibrant pink dress that matched her personality. Her bubbly manner and frequent jokes temporarily masked the recent trauma that she had endured.
Evelyn had just given birth to her first child, a daughter. She had been pumping breast milk and recovering from a C-section although the most important factor was missing... her child.
The day she gave birth, Evelyn was attacked by the father of her newborn child while she was still in the hospital. Expecting the police to simply take him away, Evelyn was left stunned when the DCFS retrieved her newborn daughter from her as well.

Thank You to the Sisters of St. Joseph Healthcare Foundation!
WTLC is incredibly grateful to the Sisters of St. Joseph Healthcare Foundation for over 15 years’ support of our Counseling programs. The Foundation works within the Orange County community to create healthy communities, providing opportunities for long-term stability to low-income and especially vulnerable populations. With the Foundation’s support, WTLC has been able to ensure survivors and their families throughout the county have access to the mental health support necessary to recover from the trauma of living in a violent home.
Thank you, Sisters of St. Joseph Healthcare Foundation, for your commitment to the health of the survivors in our community!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. During October, WTLC will engage our community in ending violence through education, awareness, and a call to action to all members of the community. Intimate partner violence is not bound by age, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion or nationality; it exists in all communities. Whether or not we experience violence in our own lives, it is imperative that we as individuals in our community support survivors of violence, honor the lives of those no longer with us due to violence, and seek to prevent future violence through actively promoting safe and healthy families and communities.
Our collaboration with partnering agencies and community members allows us to provide the care and resources our survivors need to overcome and restart their lives. This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we ask all individuals to empower themselves by speaking out and getting involved in ending the cycle of violence. Join us in this movement and use your voice as we break the silence of domestic violence. Follow us on social media all month long to learn more and speak up using
#MyVoiceMatters.

WTLC’s Center Staff provides advocacy and support to survivors and their children, both in the Shelter and the community. Through the 24/7 multi-lingual hotline, staff help survivors make connections to resources both within WTLC and with partner agencies.
