Here's the latest information about things going on in the Borough of Pompton Lakes this month, assembled and produced by the Public Information Department.

As 2020 comes to an end, I think back and reflect – what a year this has been! Who would have thought, as we entered into 2020, we would have been faced with a highly contagious coronavirus disease early in the year. In the true spirit of Pompton Lakes, our community united and together we continue to fight this disease. Recommended preventive measures have included social distancing, the wearing of facemasks in public, routine hand washing, testing, as well as monitoring and self-isolation for people exposed. I continue to stress the importance of abiding with these preventive measures to control the virus.
The past year has been challenging for the Business District. Covid-19 restrictions have limited business and affected retail. Together, the Business Improvement District and Chamber of Commerce offered businesses assistance and creative ways to move forward. Residents supported those restaurant owners who offered take out and outdoor dining. As businesses reopened, they were faced with abiding with limited capacity and adhering to safety precautions. I would encourage residents to frequent local businesses.
I thank our first responders, volunteers and employees who continue to serve Pompton Lakes. This year our first responders provided care and outstanding service through the pandemic. Our many volunteers continue to be the core of our community and offer support when needed. Those who serve as members on boards, commissions, and committees bring their personal expertise and our community benefits from their positive contributions. Borough employees maintain services for residents and are available to assist whenever needed.
This year, COVID affected us all differently. The Governing Body and Boards held meetings via video conferencing, the Board of Education introduced students to remote learning, voters received Vote-By-Mail Ballots, and businesses transitioned employees to work from home. Staying close to home was the norm, residents regularly walked around town and the trails, families rode bicycles, and neighbors became reacquainted. We are all in this together, we supported one another and we managed.
As 2020 ends, I look forward to new beginnings for Pompton Lakes. Lidl Supermarket is scheduled to open in the new year, Redevelopment continues to move forward with proposed projects, ongoing improvements within our parks as well as road paving projects.
I would invite residents to contact me if they are interested in becoming involved and serving on a Board, Commission, or Committee.
In closing, I would like to recognize the many talents of our Councilmembers as well as their dedication, commitment, and contributions to our town throughout the year – your efforts are appreciated.
Although our holiday gatherings will be limited and we celebrate differently I want to extend a safe and healthy holiday season to all!

As we approach the closing of 2020 and prepare for 2021, many changes will occur within the Borough of Pompton Lakes. During the month of December, the Municipal Clerk prepares for the Borough Reorganization Meeting held annually during the first seven days of the New Year. The purpose for this meeting is to reorganize Borough business and make appointments for the upcoming year. The 2021 Reorganization Meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 4, 2021.
As part of the process for the Reorganization Meeting, the Municipal Clerk will announce the results for the General Election that have been certified by the Passaic County Clerk, Danielle Ireland-Imhoff. The Mayor invites the newly elected members to come forward, the Councilmember takes an Oath of Office and is invited to take a seat on the Council dais.
During the Reorganization Meeting, Council is assigned as a head of a department to oversee and serve as a liaison for one of the various boards, commissions or committees within the Borough. The Governing Body is responsible for setting policy by the adoption of ordinances and resolutions.
Other business matters that take place during the meeting includes the approval of professionals and consultants for the Borough, appointments to various boards, commissions and committees along with establishing a temporary budget.

Passaic County Announces Upcoming COVID-19 Mobile Testing Dates and Times |
Passaic County has announced additional Mobile COVID-19 Testing for Passaic County residents and Passaic County Government Employees and Municipal Employees.

Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders Announce Additional COVID-19 Food Collection Dates |
Passaic County is hosting additional food distribution events at various locations. This distribution is for Passaic County residents only, drive through pick up only, proof of residency required, and limit 500 per day on a first come, first serve basis. One box per family/per car.

Governor Murphy Signs Executive Order Extending Public Health Emergency in New Jersey |
Governor Phil Murphy signed Executive Order No. 200. The Order extends the Public Health Emergency that was declared on March 9, 2020 through Executive Order No. 103, which was previously extended on April 7, May 6, June 4, July 2, August 1, August 27, September 25, and October 24. Under the Emergency Health Powers Act, a declared public health emergency expires after 30 days unless renewed. |

“Despite the hope that is on the horizon, the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over,” said Governor Murphy. “We continue to utilize all resources available and will need the ability to do so as we battle this virus through the second wave that has enveloped our nation and our state."
Executive Order No. 200 extends all Executive Orders issued under the Governor’s authority under the Emergency Health Powers Act. It also extends all actions taken by any Executive Branch departments and agencies in response to the Public Health Emergency presented by the COVID-19 outbreak.

Receive up to 70% Discount for Personal Protective Equipment for the Fight Against COVID-19 |
Through the New Jersey Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Access Program, all NJ-based businesses and non-profits are eligible for a 10% discount on PPE purchases made through an approved online retailer.
Small businesses with 100 employees or fewer may be eligible for an additional 65% discount.

Pompton Lakes Environmental Protection Committee Announces River Clean Up Pledge: Keep Our Rivers and Streams Free of Debris |
The Pompton Lakes Environmental Protection Committee has announced a river cleanup campaign as COVID-19 has forced the in person river clean up event to be cancelled.

Pompton Lakes Health Department Announces Flu Vaccine Clinics |
The Borough of Pompton Lakes Health Department has announced Flu Vaccine Clinics for ages 3 and up. Appointments are required - no walk ins. Register at (973) 835-0143, ext. 235.
The fee is $15 check or exact cash only. The vaccine is free with Medicare Part B.
This is available every Monday from 2:30 p.m. - 4:15 p.m., and from 2:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. on October 5th and 19th at the Borough Hall, 25 Lenox Avenue, Pompton Lakes, NJ 07442.

Borough of Pompton Lakes Collecting Plastic Film Through Trex Recycling Program |
The Borough of Pompton Lakes is collecting plastic film through the Trex Plastic Film Recycling Program. This programs helps the Borough earn a free community bench for every 500 pounds recycled.
Drop off locations include:
- Borough Hall
- Library
- St. Mary's Church
- Lenox School (Closed due to COVID-19)
- Lincoln School (Closed due to COVID-19)
- Lakeside Middle School (Closed due to COVID-19)

- Newspaper sleeves

Pompton Lakes Library Opening Procedures and Guidelines |
The library is currently open to the public, with some restrictions:
- Masks need to be worn and social distancing should be observed.
- Due to the size of the building, and restrictions on occupancy, there is a limit of 7 library patrons at a time. There is a possibility one will need to temporarily wait outside.
- Computers are available, but we ask that patrons limit their online session to 45 minutes.
- Printer/Scanner/Fax are available.
- We ask that patrons keep their visit to under 45 minutes.
- Hand sanitizing stations and wipes are available around the building. Patrons are encouraged to use them before and after using computers and/or handling materials.

COVID-19: Human Services Opens Applications for Coronavirus Child Care Tuition Assistance Program |
New Jersey Human Services Commissioner Carole Johnson announced that applications are now open for the new COVID-19 child care tuition assistance program the Murphy Administration has created to help families with child care costs as schools open remotely. |
|
The $150 million program will provide child care tuition assistance to New Jersey families with incomes up to $75,000 that are in need of either full or part-time child care due to their child’s remote learning schedule.
Families can apply for this assistance by completing the online application at www.ChildCareNJ.gov. Those applying will need proof of income and a notice or announcement from their child’s school of a remote learning schedule.

- Aluminum & Metal Beverage Containers

- Detergent and Shampoo Containers
- Juice Boxes & Juice/Beverage Cartons
- Plastic with #1, #2, or #5 Symbols

Recycling Center
The Borough Recycling Center is located on Grove Street and is open to all Borough Residents and Businesses. Residents and Businesses must display on their mirror or show the attendant a valid Borough decal or I.D. upon entering the Center. The Center is open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
The Recycling Center offers biodegradable lawn and leaf bags at a cost of $.35 cents per bag. The following materials are accepted at the Recycling Center:
- Grass Clippings
- Leaves, Brush & Tree Limbs (max length 8 ft; max diameter 2 inch)
- Co-mingled Glass, Plastic & Metal Recyclables
- Aluminum cans - must be separated from other co-mingled recyclables
- Paper & Cardboard Recyclables
- Corrugated Cardboard – must be separated from other paper recyclables
- Electronic Equipment & Computers
- Metals
- Waste Engine Oil
- Car Batteries
Tires may be brought to the Recycling Center at a cost of $2.50 per tire without the rim and $5.00 per tire with rim. Propane tanks are not accepted at the Recycling Center.
LEAVING MATERIALS AT THE RECYCLING CENTER GATE WHEN THE CENTER IS CLOSED IS CONSIDERED ILLEGAL DUMPING AND PUNISHABLE BY FINES AND/OR IMPRISONMENT.
