The Converse Creative Writing program will host novelist and short story writer Thomas McConnell for a reading in the Zimmerli Common Room, located in Howard Hall. McConnell lectures and readings have taken him to Istanbul, Berlin, and the Sorbonne in Paris. A professor of English at the University of South Carolina Upstate, he was a Fulbright Scholar in the Czech Republic where he taught American literature and creative writing at Masaryk University. His novel of the Czechlands in World War Two, The Wooden King , was published by Hub City Press in 2018.

Steinway Artist and Babcock Professor of Piano at Converse College, Douglas Weeks gives a recital that features Mozart’s best loved and most played piano work, Rondo in D Major as well as Beethoven’s Sonata in C Minor, a piece deemed by musicologists as “one of his most celebrated compositions.” Concluding the recital will be the 10 movement musical work, Pictures at an Exhibition, by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky that was inspired by a retrospective art exhibition of his dear friend Viktor Hartmann.

The Petrie Winds, made up of Chris Vaneman on flute, Kelly Vaneman on Oboe, Karen Hill on clarinet, Frank Watson on bassoon, and Anneke Zuehlke on horn, present “Thieving Magpies”, a concert of arrangements of arrangements. Featured works will include Rossini’s Overture to  La gazza ladra , Mozart’s Jupiter from The Planets  and Mussorgsky’s  Pictures at an Exhibition  (arr. Kevin Moore).

In honor of Women’s History Month, Converse Symphony Orchestra returns for their Spring concert to perform Louise Farrenc’s  Symphony No. 3 . Described as impressively energetic and structurally satisfying, Farrenc’s masterwork is uniquely expressive and a significant voice that needs to be recognized and heard.
