Go Green LaGrange Monthly Update:

Maec 2025

"Recycle the present, save the future." ~Anonymous

Tip of the Month:

Let your garden sleep in until we have at least one week of temperatures in or above 50 degrees. By removing the leaves and "tidying up," you are not only removing the natural mulch and fertilizer that the leaves provide, you are also killing all of the beneficial insects and native pollinators that are nesting in that leaf litter.

President's Note:

CHECK YOUR SPAM! This may not make much sense if you are reading this now, but some correspondence have been ending up in our community members' spam folders since one of the latest phone updates. If you notice a significant decline in our communication, please check and also remember you can always learn about our upcoming events through our website at GoGreenLaGrange.org.

We had an amazing opportunity to celebrate our dedicated volunteers at our appreciation event last month (pictures below). During this event we had the privilege of recognizing our Volunteer of the Year, Curt Carlson, for his ongoing support as our organization's Webmaster. We also awarded Katherine Beyer a certificate of completion for her work as our first ever summer intern.

We will be accepting applications for our 2025 Summer Internship Program, through April 30th. If you have a student in mind who you feel may be interested in this program please have them email us at GoGreenLaGrange1@gmail.com and we will forward the application packet. More information about this program is listed in the flyer below.

Thank you for your continued support.

Warmest Regards,

Alexandria Zuck

This Month's Environmental Highlight:

$1.2B Great Lakes Invasive Carp Mitigation Project Delay

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has postponed a $1.2 billion initiative designed to prevent invasive carp from entering the Great Lakes, citing concerns that the federal government under President Donald Trump may not fulfill its financial obligations. The project, planned since 2020 in collaboration with Michigan and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, aims to install deterrent technologies in the Des Plaines River near Joliet, Illinois. While federal funding was allocated through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Water Resources Development Act, a recent freeze on federal grants and loans by the Trump administration has created uncertainty. Consequently, Pritzker has delayed property transfer for the project until at least May, seeking written assurances of federal support. This postponement could impact efforts to protect the Great Lakes’ $7 billion fishing industry from the ecological threat posed by invasive carp. You can find more details in the full article here.

Community Spotlight Series:

The Children's Community Closet in

La Grange Park has been a wonderful partner. Together we have worked to divert thousands of pairs of shoes and over a ton of clothing from our local landfill. For three years they have been a dependable organization participating in our community Clothing and Textile Take Backs and Community Shoe Share events.

Green Infrastructure and Flood Mitigation

“We will have a bigger impact if we think systemically,” Frisbie explains in her one-on-one interview with WBEZ’s Sasha-Ann Simons this week. Spearheading the Greater Chicago Watershed Alliance, Friends and Watershed Alliance members, are pushing for substantial shifts in watershed governance and infrastructural development and maintenance.

The use of nature-based green infrastructure leverages the inherent intelligence and resiliency of nature to develop future-focused strategies for just and sustainable living. Developing tactics for educating local leaders, planning and policy experts, and the public, the Watershed Alliance urges that we think with nature, rather than against it.

Save the Monarchs, Heres How:

The International Union for Conservation of Nature has added migratory monarch butterflies to their list of Threatened Species. This means Monarch butterflies are now in danger of extinction. In fact, 99.9% of the Western monarch butterfly population has disappeared since 1980.

We all can help by planting milkweed which is the monarch caterpillar's only source of food. And since Fall is the best time to plant milkweed, hurry and visit mwrd.org/save-monarchs to take the pledge to receive free milkweed seeds to help save monarchs.
