Gary Roskin -
Roskin Gem News Report -
There were 517 items offered, 416 items sold on Monday in this Fall sale from Heritage Auctions, Dallas, Texas, with seven (7) of the top eight (8) high sales items being noteworthy diamonds. One of the headliners, a 5.01 carat pear shape brilliant, D color, Internally Flawless Type IIa diamond, set in platinum, flanked by two tapered baguettes. The diamond ring sold for $300,000 including the Buyers Premium (BP).
Following the top diamonds on the featured list is this beautiful Sri Lankan blue Sapphire, cushion cut, no heat, surrounded by diamonds and calibré cut Sri Lankan blue sapphires.
Condition notes in the catalogue state that the sapphire faces-up silky. Under magnification, one sees "blankets" of reflective rutile silk further reaffirming the AGL call of unheated.

TOMRA's XRT
Recovering the Really Big Diamonds
The XRT has Found MANY Large Crystals
... and We Have the List!
| |
|
Gary Roskin -
Roskin Gem News Report -
As we read last week in the Roskin Gem News Report, one of the largest rough diamonds in recorded history, a 2,492-carat stone, was recovered last August by Lucara Diamond Corp. using the TOMRA X-Ray Transmission (XRT) technology sorting machine at the Karowe Mine in Botswana.
Of course, finding the second largest ever gem quality rough diamond crystal is historic, but it's the technology that has stolen our attention!
The 2,492 carater is just the latest of many impressive record-breaking recoveries achieved at the mine’s Mega Diamond Recovery Plant since the installation of the two TOMRA COM XRT 1200 / D 2.0 sorters in 2017.
As TOMRA points out, quite rightly, it's not just the discovery of the 2,942 carater that is so important, but that it is the largest diamond ever recovered directly from run-of-mine ore! And all because of the new technology.
You will be amazed at how many very large rough crystals have been found in such a short time! We've got that list!
Tap here to read more about this amazing technology and what it has done for the diamond mining industry!

A Google search for the 4Cs will find GIA's new consumer focused website under 4Cs.GIA.edu.
"The information in our redesigned consumer website is based on GIA’s decades of research, education and consumer outreach about diamonds. We focused on the diamond quality information that a consumer needs to know to understand how to buy a diamond – the 4Cs and how those reflect rarity, the GIA International Diamond Grading System and how we apply those standards, and the importance of having an independent diamond grading report."

Let's Play Jeopardy!
Can You Respond Correctly in just One Second?
| |
|
Gary Roskin -
Roskin Gem News Report -
Jeopardy! is a long running American television game show created by Merv Griffin, and hosted by Ken Jennings.
The show is a quiz competition amongst three contestants, that reverses the traditional question-and-answer format of many other quiz shows, by giving you the answer first, and then asking you to provide the question.
Jeopardy Challenge Two Ways
A few nights back, the game had as one of its categories of general knowledge, Birthstones.
How well would you have done in this category? Let's find out!
We're offering you two different ways to read the clues before you shout out your answers.
#1 - Since so many of you are in the gem and jewelry industry, we will give you the clues without giving you the month!
or #2 - If you are not in the industry, we will give you the clues exactly the way they were given on TV - including the month!

Who Wore What Jewels
at the 2024 Emmy Awards
Stunning Red Carpet Moments
| |
|
LauraLee -
WhoWoreWhatJewels.com -
We are so glad that the 2024 Emmy Awards are back, if only to see the jewels being worn on eth red carpet!
"After last year’s SAG strike reshuffle, we’re finally seeing the stars step out this fall, and they did not hold back. Bvlgari Serpenti necklaces slithered across the red carpet on everyone from Saoirse Ronan to Maya Rudolph and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Of course, diamonds kept things timeless, but it was the bold pops of color—think Kristin Scott Thomas and Laura Dern—that had us buzzing. Dern even gave a cheeky nod to her show, Palm Royale.
Ready for the night’s best gems? Let’s dive in!"
Lauralee gives us that signature close-up with several stunning displays. Here we see Greta Lee wearing Tiffany & Co. diamond earrings set in platinum, featuring over 19 carats of tanzanite centers!
This should get you interested to click in and see the rest!

World Gem Foundation
Reveals Diamond Grading Math Success
| |
|
Gary Roskin -
Roskin Gem News Report -
In the latest issue of the World Gem Foundation's magazine, Gemmology Today, founder and editor Geoff Dominy puts together another very interesting read. What caught our attention was Dominy's review of Michael Cowing's objective diamond grading system: "More or Less - Objective Diamond Clarity Grading."
Michael Cowing is an expert in all things diamond, diamond cut, diamond color, diamond fluorescence, and diamond grading. His book, Objective Diamond Clarity Grading, proves that he is not only an exceptional diamond grader, but he has head for math.
And this leads us to GIA, the Gemological Institute of America, describing diamond clarity grading as an "art and a science."
But diamond clarity grading isn't actually art, but math.

Friday Flick Worth Watching
|
Gary Roskin -
Roskin Gem News Report -
Jeweller Magazine -
Jeweler Magazine has a feature called Friday Flicks where they take YouTube video clips and give you a nice break at the end of the week to head-start the weekend.
Last week's Friday Flicks includes an opal cutting journey from rough to finish. A very satisfying trip indeed, from Black Opal Direct: Justin - Founder, Opal Expert and Master Cutter. The large rough looks too sandy to create anything of beauty, but wait until the end... There's a nice gem opal hidden underneath all of that.
With Justin, you not only get opal cutting advice, you also get a little bit of outback philosophy!
It's all good.

A Look at Boucheron's High Jewellery
|
by KRISTEN SHIRLEY -
The Malaysian Reserve Magazine -
We found this wonderful feature about Boucheron's High Jewelry collection, Or Bleu (blue gold), written by Kristen Shirley with quotes from Grant Mobley at Only Natural Diamonds, and from Frank Everett, vice chairman of jewellery Americas at Sotheby’s.
The collection is stunning and the videos from Boucheron definitely inspire design.
"Why is Boucheron so hot as luxury softens across the board? Customers of fine jewellery have begun to look outside iconic items such as Van Cleef & Arpels’ Alham- bra line and Cartier’s Love bracelets, designs that are so beloved they’ve become ubiquitous — and imitated."
Not sure how they will imitate this rock crystal and diamond necklace!

Hong Kong: in a word, Slow
Yellow Gold is Hot! Diamonds… not.
Here’s Anthony DeMarco’s Review in Forbes.com

An excellent report from the September Hong Kong Shows by Anthony DeMarco, covering the economy, politics and its affect on business, gems, gold, diamonds, antique & estate, and more. Here are just a few snippets. You should click the link below to read DeMarco’s complete report. – gr
Jewellery & Gem World Hong Kong
The pulse of the jewelry industry and its relationship with the constantly changing world is reflected each year at Jewellery & Gem World Hong Kong (JGWHK).
This year the annual jewelry trade show attracted more than 3,300 exhibitors, a 5% decline from 2023, according to Informa Markets, which owns and operates the fair. Although final buyer numbers aren’t available, walking the floors on the first four days, it’s easy to see that foot traffic was down as well. Still the show is expected to attract about 50,000 visitors.
More important than the numbers themselves is what they represent. A major typhoon in the Shanghai area a few days before the show began meant many exhibitors and buyers from the area could not immediately make the trip to Hong Kong. Obviously, war in Ukraine and in Gaza has kept people in these regions from attending. After years of exponential growth, the U.S. jewelry market has softened, partly due to the upcoming presidential election. The China market has softened as well, reflecting the country’s overall economic challenges. These are the two largest markets in the world for jewelry. Then for the first time in memory, the fair coincided with the Mid-Autumn Festival on September 18, which further reduced overall attendance, at least temporarily.
