If You See Something, Say Something: An invitation to speak up when Israel strays away from its own declared vision. Israel's Declaration of Independence ensures social and political rights to all of Israel's inhabitants irrespective of religion, race, or sex; freedom of religion, conscience, language, education, and culture; and a country that will safeguard the holy places of all religions. There are instances where Israel goes off course. What should diaspora Jews do? In this presentation Hoffman will suggest an action guide for the perplexed on how we can support the Israeli movements for justice.

| Rededication of our Russian Torah Scroll |

Friday, October 5 during Qabbalat Shabbat at 6:00 p.m.
Join us as we rededicate our Russian Torah scroll, which has just been refurbished to kosher condition. Ena and Michael Feinberg, who gave this scroll to Temple Israel, will share their story of how they smuggled it out of the U.S.S.R. during the Russian Refusenik era.

Charleston: Gateway to American Jewish History, with Hasia Diner, Ph.D.

 This coming May, the CAJL, accompanied by Rabbi Zecher, will travel to Charleston and Savannah on a custom-designed study tour. We will experience these cities and learn about their Jewish past and present. Our study will be led by Hasia Diner, the Steinberg Professor of American Jewish History at NYU. On October 14, Professor Diner will present "Charleston: Gateway to American Jewish History." Come and learn with Professor Diner, and then stay for an introduction to our study tour with her in May.
