Dear Ghent UMC Family,
Mother's Day is a holiday that is a celebration for many, but can also be a day of deep hurt for others. Some suffer from damaged relationships, some feel the often silent heartache of infertility and loss, and some have their own reasons why this day causes a whole jumble of emotions.
It's understandable that some avoid church on Mother's Day. Maybe you're scared it will be an entire worship service "celebrating" mothers or you fear being singled out and told "Happy Mother's Day" on a day that isn't happy for you.
This Sunday, everyone will receive a carnation (not just women). You're welcome to keep your flower or give it to someone special. But if neither of those feel right for you, there will be time in the service when you'll be invited to lay your carnation on the altar. This is an act of following the words of 1 Peter 5:7, "Cast all your worries upon the Lord because he cares for you." You don't have to hold it all.
Whether you come to church or sit this one out, I hope you feel the presence of the Holy Spirit holding you tight and bringing you the assurance of our God's comfort and love. If you ever want to talk, please feel free to reach out.
In God's Grace,
Pastor Britney
