MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Meet Diane Mayer...
How did you become interested in combining Yoga and Pilates?
I started in Fitness over 30 years ago during which time I was introduced to Yoga and loved the phenomenal combination of strength and flexibility. This past year I was introduced to the more spiritual side of Yoga and from there my practice has really expanded.

How does Pilates benefit the core and Yoga?
- Pilates focuses on strengthening the core muscles (abdominal, lower back, hips and buttocks), therefore you have better strength in balances, inversions and core poses..such as Navasana/Boat pose. Read more...
What's on your playlist?
I like to predominantly use music that is soothing and relaxing. Some of the artists I have used are Vangelis and Hennie Becker. I also like the compilations that David and Steven Gordon have put together.

BEYOND THE MAT... FUN FACTS FOR THE INQUIRING YOGI |
What is a Mantra?
A mantra is a series of words or a phrase that is repeated continuously in meditation to help focus the mind. It is usually a phrase chosen to uplift you and is also a great way to shift your thought patterns. In other words, think positive intentions and create positive actions that will resonate in your daily life
Mantras can be as simple as repeating one word "happiness" or a phrase that feels right for that point in time "I am present and at peace".
You may also hear some of these Mantras repeated in your yoga classes. They may be repeated at the beginning of class to bring us together for practice such as chanting the sound of OM or at the end of class so that we may feel its amazing vibrations. Another popular mantra is "Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti" offering universal peace.
Try one of our meditation classes and enjoy the benefits of Mantra meditation.

WELLNESS TIPS WITH THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS
|
Stiff Neck
We knew it would eventually come - cool nights! However, keeping the windows in our bedrooms open at night can often cause the already tight muscles in our neck to tighten even more causing a symptom called torticollis or wry neck. In this condition, the neck can't turn properly or move fluidly and feels 'stuck'. The first action to take is to get heat onto the neck with either a heating pad, hot water bottle or oat grain bag (Magic Bag). The second action is to see your massage therapist as soon as possible so that the trigger points/knots can be worked out and the tightened tissue released. Your massage therapist will have important stretches specific for this condition to help speed the healing process and get your range of motion back in your neck.
Welcome Karen Wilson!
Therapeutic Effects Massage Therapy is happy to welcome Karen Wilson to the team! Karen brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to her massage practice as she was a physiotherapist in Germany for 11 years before venturing over to Canada and becoming a registered massage therapist. Her expertise ranges from neurological impairment, to sport and hot stone massage, as well as pregnancy massage. Come and experience for yourself the Therapeutic Effects that Karen can offer you.
