Background:
Graton and Occidental have struggled for decades to provide wastewater treatment in a manner that protects public health and the environment and is affordable and sustainable. Wastewater from the Occidental County Sanitation District is currently hauled by tanker trucks to the Airport Treatment Plant via Graton Road and through the community of Graton. The Graton Community Services District owns and operates a sewer system and wastewater treatment plant.
These communities are currently partnering on a new study to evaluate the feasibility of installing a small (4” diameter) pipeline to connect the Occidental wastewater system to the Graton treatment plant. If this project is found to be feasible and can be constructed, it would eliminate the current wastewater trucking operation, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce or stabilize sewer service rates in both communities.
The feasibility study recently began and will be completed in the fall of this year. Supervisor Lynda Hopkins will be hosting a public meeting on June 29th to both inform the public on this feasibility study, and to seek input on key issues the study should consider. Community representatives from Graton and Occidental will provide their views on current conditions and their hopes for the future. Representatives of the Sonoma County Water Agency will provide information on the scope and schedule for the feasibility study.
