View From the Road
Katherine Higgins
I write this week from Decatur, GA, where the other directors and I have come to spend a week in the ACPE office. I always enjoy being in the office - the banter, the laughter, the opportunities for connection, and a reminder of our shared commitment to supporting the work of our organization. This week in Decatur marks one year since I've been in this role, and I'm taking the opportunity to reflect upon the work I've been doing - its meaning, its purpose, its joys, and my own opportunities for growth.

Above is another unlabeled picture from the ACPE archives. Do you recognize these folks or the event? Send us a note at  webmaster@acpe.edu .
Thank you to ACPE Certified Educator Bill Scrivener who responded to the photo in last week's newsletter. Bill wrote:

This is a picture of several members of the Eastern Region. I'm not sure of the date but probably in the mid-to-late 80s. People I recognize include (besides me, in the white print shirt and kerchief)) Bob Anderson (to my right), Bill Baugh, and John DeVelder. (both behind Bob).

Spiritual Care Week 2018
Weekly Highlights
This Week's Reflection
If you live in a part of the country where fireflies are prevalent, you know how mesmerizing and evening can be when you take time to sit and just watch them do their thing. This poem goes in a different direction, one that perhaps captures a memory of the moment we first saw the blinking light of these bugs, the "aha!" as we guessed where they would appear next as the dusk settled in around us.
 "Fireflies" by James Crews

Some insights come like lightning-
blinding and fierce-while others arrive
as firefly-flashes that brighten only
an inch or so of air around them.
Yet even these can gather power
over time, like the summer night
I woke and stood at the window
to watch all that pulsing outside-
like thousands of prayers flaring up
above the houses, saying here
and here and here, as I made my way
down the stairs using only the light
of those small bodies to guide me.

Last week, the ACPE staff was hard at work cleaning up our server and old data records. It is not fun or exciting work, but it is so necessary for the health of our organization.

Summer has some of its own "necessary but not fun" practices. Check out these images of children as their parents apply sunscreen to their faces (because many of us know exactly what this is like!):
