We are about to write our next chapter together. ACPE and AAPC members broke voter turnout records and overwhelmingly voted in favor to consolidate into one association. Our two associations have a shared history, values and culture. Both born in the 1960s, each association had a slightly different mission and focus but more similarities than differences. During that time, we met and collaborated regularly. Now a little more than 50 years later, we will join as one association with a unified voice and mission.

I hope everyone is doing well, staying warm, and enjoying winter! Your Certification Commission has been hard at work since we began our terms in January. In our most recent conversation, we focused on two main topics: CEC Evaluations and pre-admission participation in peer groups.
CEC Evaluations This past January, we implemented a significant change in our certification process that eliminated structured units of Certified Educator CPE.

Recently, teachers were described as "losers" at a rally along the southern border. In response, two teachers decided to respond:
|
An Ode to Loser Teachers By Drs. Adam Jordan and Todd Hawley
Losers. For years teachers strive and push for knowledge. Knowledge they intend to share with kindness. Indeed they are losers.
Losers of freedom, burdened by ballooning student loans and unfair wages. Still, paycheck to paycheck they keep pushing, their well-being second to the minds and souls of those before them.
Losers of respect, "Socialists," "enemies of the State." Silk-stockinged leaders beat the war drum and brand them losers incapable of free thought. They hear the drum and know it signals the loss of their autonomy, the theft of public trust.
Losers of time, working late nights and weekends planning lessons on algebra, history, and DNA replication. Duties performed outside their working hours, brains never given the option to disengage.
Losers of sleep, they lie awake in worry, fretting over the well-being of the students they love.
Losers they may be, as so much has been stolen. But they will persist. It is in their love-hewn brains. Their profession is for others, not themselves. Thus they persist.
Losers of patience, they are, certainly. They've reached a boiling point. They will strike, write, speak, march. But they won't lose their minds, and they won't lose their students.
Losers of the ability to banish the thought, that never leaves their minds: Without teachers, who will help? Without teachers, we're all losers.

And while we're at it celebrating teachers, we offer this brief video as well (please pardon some language). Taylor Mali began his career as a teacher and uses his experiences in his poetry. Here's one of his most popular pieces, one that I trust resonates with all of the educators out there: Taylor Mali: What teachers make.
