TOLA LECOÑA FAMILY UPDATE

Luz has started her training in phlebotomy and is really enjoying it. It is great practice in both her medical training and English. She has submitted all of her information for her work permit and is now waiting for it to be approved.

Alberto has received his work permit! While Alberto has been preparing to get a commercial drivers license, a setback occurred when the law was changed to prohibit asylum seekers from getting a CDL. He had been looking forward to becoming a school bus driver. He is currently seeking work and continuing practicing his English with GLC's very own Sharon Morical.

Mati's English is improving and he says he is more confident in class and participating more. He enjoys school. Mati received a Meeker Marvel Award for excellent character in class!

Alma is healthy and happy and has said her first word - "Matias"!! Clearly, her brother is one of her favorite people 😀

On the horizon - in the coming months, the family is making plans. Mati is considering summer camp options; Luz would like to learn how to drive and they are still interested in a dependable used car. Please reach out to a member of the Friends of the Family team if you have suggestions or questions or ideas for employment for Alberto.

GLC OUTDOOR SPRING CLEANUP

Mark your calendars for this Saturday, April 11 from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.

A group of 15 -20 volunteers is needed to help clean and mulch our landscaping beds, the memorial garden and to pick up sticks and branches on the grounds. Many hands will make light work!

Rakes, gloves, scoop shovels and perhaps a wheel barrow may be brought if you have them. Be sure to label your items.

Hopefully our weather will be nice and dry as this will be a great opportunity to connect with the great outdoors and with one another! If you have any questions, contact Joel Kruckenberg: 515-460-2519

WE DID IT!!!

During Lenten season and ending on Easter, our collection of supplies continued to grow into a mountain! Thanks to your generosity, we've met our goal of 500 personal care kits! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

What's next? The kits and quilts will be blessed during worship on April 12th. Help is still needed with a few things, so check the list below to see how you can help get our kits and quilts to their destination:

  • Medium and large boxes are needed to pack the kits and the quilts. These can be brought to the church any time this week.

  • Volunteers are needed to help pack the kits and quilts following the April 12th service.

  • Volunteer drivers are needed on April 18 between 8:30 - 11: 00 a.m. to deliver the kits to Des Moines where they will be shipped.

  • It costs $3 per kit/quilt to ship. We will have a basket in the entryway on Sunday, April 12th for donations towards shipping to send these items on their way. Donations may also be dropped off in the church office ahead of time, please be sure to label these for LWR.

Thank you for your love and for your caring hearts. We Belong to God and We Belong to Each Other - no matter where in the world the each other might be!

FEEDING HAITI'S KIDS

Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ames is sponsoring a “Feeding Haiti’s Kids” meal packing event on Friday, April 17, 2026. Volunteers are needed to work 2 hour shifts between the hours of 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. to package 150,000 nutritious meals for Haiti’s children. GLC members have volunteered in prior years and found the experience to be very rewarding. Contact Cindy Kruckenburg (515-460-2518) if you are interested in being on a team with others from GLC or click on the link below for more information on how you can make a positive impact on children facing food insecurities in Haiti.

EASTER GARDEN

The GLC sanctuary was beautiful this Easter. Colorful blooms and quilts added so much to our celebration. Here are some pictures.

Here is a link to a list of those remembered and honored in this year’s Easter Garden and those who have “planted” the flowers.
