Please Help Us Plan This Year's Ice Cream Social

Now that it is officially Spring (yes, really), we are getting excited about this year's Ice Cream Social on Friday, May 4th. This is a wonderful event involving ice cream, games, cakes, and books. Are you interested in joining the ICS committee or finding out what goes on behind the scenes? Then please join us at a planning meeting on Thursday, March 29th at 4:30pm. Can't make the meeting but want to get involved? No problem, the current team will be happy to get in touch with you. Please contact Katharine Wellner for further information and meeting details.

Several of our ICS committee members are moving on next year so there will be spots open on the committee next year. Helping out this year would be great on-the-job training for next year.
Book Donations Needed for the Ice Cream Social

Parents, please consider donating books for the annual used book sale that will be taking place during this year’s ice cream social on Friday, May 4th. The collection starts this coming Monday, March 26th. You can send them in with your child. There are two square plastic boxes clearly labeled “book donations” placed on the right of the cafeteria doors in the Gates School lobby. Do you have too many to carry to school? No problem, just contact Sian McGurk to arrange a pick up. Thank you for donating the gift of a good read for a great cause.
Author Tui Sutherland is Coming to Gates!

On Wednesday, March 28th, Gates students in grades 3 through 6 will have the opportunity to talk with our visiting author about her experiences in writing and publishing. Ms. Sutherland is participating in Authors for Earth Day and has asked the students to select a charity to which she will donate her entire presenter's fee. She will reveal the results of the vote during her visit. The grades spent some time learning about each organization this past week:

Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and have autographs signed. If your child has a personal copy of one of Tui Sutherland's books (or another object) at home they'd like signed, please send it in by Wednesday morning with the child's name on a post-it note inside the book. Ms. Magovern will collect those items to be signed after the presentations wrap up on the 28th.

If you have questions, please email Sheila Magovern .
In Box Tops News

Thank you for sending in your box tops. Our latest submission earned Gates School $193.50 and every little bit helps. Please keep clipping those box tops and place them in the collection box outside of the Gates school office or in the box at Roche Bros. grocery store. For each one, Gates receives 10 cents and it really adds up.
Support Gates School and Eat at Not Your Average Joe’s!

We are happy to report that Gates Elementary School was selected again for the Not Your Average Cause Program . Not Your Average Joe’s chose Gates School because they believe in the value we bring to the community and they want to contribute to our success.

Here is how it works. Every Tuesday during the month of March Gates families are invited to dine (or carry out) at Not Your Average Joe’s and they will donate 15% of your total purchase to Gates School. Simply present this certificate to your server on March 13th, 20th and 27th and verbally state your affiliation. The more Gates Elementary supporters who participate, the more money Not Your Average Joe’s will donate!
