Please join the PTO on Monday, May 13th at 7:30pm in Gates Library for the last public PTO meeting of the 2018-2019 school year. This is an especially important meeting as we will be voting in the officers for the 2019-2020 school year PTO Board.
Also MSBA project will be presented at the PTO meeting to discuss the new building.

We would like to say thank you for everyone who donated to make Staff appreciation week great for Gates and Jennifer Smith for organizing the week.
We need volunteers to help set up and take down the Celebrate the Arts Night exhibition. It is a HUGE undertaking and assistance would be SOOOO appreciated!  Feel free to bring your school aged child with you to volunteer. We need volunteers at the following times:

Hello from the Health Office!

Spring brings many things, some great and others not as great. The latter includes poison ivy. Teach your family to be on the lookout for poison ivy. The old rhyme, "leaves of three, let them be!" is a great way to help children remember what poison ivy looks like. You can also show them this image to help them recognize it, keeping it mind that colors of leaves change with the season.
Also, a reminder to parents of 6th grade students that a current physical exam and immunization record are required for 7th grade. Please send these in or follow up with the Health Office if you have not already done so,
Thank you!

Special Visitors

Last week the PTO brought Civil Rights icon Ruby Bridges to visit with grades 3-6! She was the first African American child to desegregate a Louisiana Elementary school in 1960. It was a powerful presentation with the message “give each other a chance.” She engaged the kids directly and was impressed with what they knew.
The PTO was also excited to welcome storyteller Valerie Tutson who shared Tales From African Traditions with grades K to 2! Drawing from her own travels, the internationally known storyteller brought to life an assortment of myths, folktales and historical accounts from the African continent and the African Diaspora and showed students the beauty, humor and wisdom of tales which help to illuminate parts of the diverse and ancient cultures of Africa.

Thank you to Jennifer Smith and Laryssa Doohovskoy for helping organize these events for the students.
Story time at silver unicorn
Come join us for our annual Gates Story Time at the Silver Unicorn! We will be letting you know the special guest readers next week. This event will be from 6 pm to 8 pm, but you can stop in at anytime during that time period. A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to the PTO to help fund more enrichment events like the Ruby Bridges and Valerie Tutson visits.
Activity Day Planning is Underway!

Activity Day is coming up on Friday, June 7th ! Activity Day is a day when the whole school goes outside to play games on the Gates fields. The day starts with a Fun Run around the school and ends with a picnic lunch and dancing. Lots of help is needed to make this day a success, so please keep an eye out for more information and volunteer opportunities coming soon!
