The Gates Spelling Bee is Around the Corner

Get ready for our second annual Spelling Bee on Saturday, November 18th. Starting in the Gates cafeteria at 9:00 am, the Spelling Bee has both a written and oral round. Students will be divided into two groups: Group 1 will be grades K-3 and Group 2 will be grades 4-6. Please download a copy of the word list for Group 1 and Group 2 . Every participant will receive a certificate signed by Principal Newman, and the winners from each group will receive trophies. Flyers have been sent home with registration details.

If you have a middle or high schooler that would be interested in being a pronouncer at the Spelling Bee, please email Irfan Syed now. Interested in helping us pull this event together? Reach out to either Irfan Syed or Kara Bayer for more information!

Physical Education Night is This Wednesday!

Physical Education Night is this Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 6:30-7:30 pm in the Gates gymnasium. The goal is to educate the community on the most current practices used in today's elementary physical education and allow your family the opportunity to practice and demonstrate developmentally appropriate activities.

Please remember to wear clothing appropriate for movement. This event is for school-aged children only. We're looking forward to seeing you soon. If you have any questions please contact Physical Education instructor Jill Reed.

Gates Fun Run "Thank You" and Survey

On behalf of Lynne, Naomi, and Donna we would like to express our heartfelt thanks for your generous support of the Gates Fun Run. It was such a special day watching our Gates community come together to raise money for our school.

The proceeds of over $25,000 from the Fun Run will allow us to continue to fund programs that enhance the educational experience offered to all our students. The money helps to fund teacher's assistants and special enrichment programs for the elementary school children at Gates. But it wouldn't have been possible without the help of the Gates community, teachers, and volunteers.

In case you missed it, we were featured in the Acton Beacon (twice). Check out the Acton's Gates School students to run for fun and funds article and The "Gates Fun Run" photos. We would also like to invite parents to take a brief survey to assess how we did with the Gates Fun Run. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you ALL for making the Gates Fun Run such a spectacular event!

The Student Council is Collecting Winter Clothes

The Gates Student Council is being run by Mrs. Melbourne and Mr. Wadsworth this year. The Gates Student Council will be collecting items for donation to the Acton Clothes Closet, a charitable organization run by the Acton Food Pantry. We are collecting new winter hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, and socks. There will be a collection box in the school lobby or items may be dropped off in Room 11. Please bring all items in by Monday, December 11, 2017. Please contact Mrs. Melbourne and Mr. Wadsworth with any questions.

School Building Project: Town Meetings and Informational Forum

The ABRSD community is in the middle of a large-scale school building project and the first phases of an existing conditions study and development of a master plan have been completed. The School Building Committee is in the process of planning for a new twin elementary school, in partnership with the MSBA, to replace some of our aging buildings.

Special town meetings are scheduled in both Acton and Boxborough on December 4, 2017 to vote on funding for a feasibility study for this project. A series of community forums will be held to provide more detailed information about the building project. The Gates informational forum will be held in the Gates cafeteria on Monday, November 13th at 7:00 pm. Please consider coming to both the special town meetings and the Gates informational forum.

Please note there will be babysitting services for parents that want to attend the special town meeting coordinated through Alycen Nigro. More details are coming soon. For more information please visit review the flyer, visit the School Capital/Space Planning website or email

Gates PTO Meeting is Coming Up

To accommodate the Gates information forum for the School Building Project in the Gates cafeteria, we are starting our PTO meeting at 8:00 pm in the Gates library on Monday, November 13th. We highly encourage parents to attend both the Gates informational forum and the PTO meeting.

Hello From the Health Office

During the month of October, the Gates Health Office logged 496 visits for illness/injury/medication and other health issues. In addition, since the start of the school year, we have performed 543  state mandated health screenings. Although we've been busy caring for students, absenteeism from school for significant illness remains quite limited, though we expect that to climb as the season wears on.

Please alert the Gates Health Office with activity restrictions advised by your provider whenever children have an evaluation for injury or they are coming to school wearing a splint, sling, crutches, etc. The restrictions should include the type of injury, type of restrictions (example: PE and recess activities) and time frame for the restrictions.
