Save the Date: The Gates Spelling Bee

Back by popular demand, the Gates PTO is hosting our second annual Spelling Bee on Saturday, November 18th! Kicking off in the Gates cafeteria at 9:00 am, the Spelling Bee has both a written and oral round. Students will be divided into two groups; Group 1 will be grades K-3 and Group 2 will be grades 4-6. Registrants will be provided with word lists to study ahead of time. Every participant will receive a certificate signed by Principal Newman, and the winners from each group will receive trophies.

If you have a middle or high schooler that would be interested in being a pronouncer at the Spelling Bee, please email Irfan Syed now. Stay tuned for more information coming home soon, including word lists, registration details, and a volunteer sign up. Interested in helping us pull this event together? Reach out to either Irfan Syed or Kara Bayer for more information!

The Harvest Festival is Right Around the Corner

Formerly the Fall Family Social, the Harvest Festival is a new event featuring pumpkin decorating, a pie walk, arts and crafts, a bake sale, fun fall games, raffles, a selfie pumpkin station, donuts on a string contest, seasonal treats, and more! This event will be taking place on Friday 11/03/17 at the Gates School.

If you are interested in helping run crafts, games, and food please sign up. We need all volunteer positions filled to make this a fun night for our families and friends!

Dances of the World Needs a Chair!

We are in desperate need of a chair or co-chair for the Dances of the World or we might not be able to have it this year. This event is scheduled for Friday, February 2nd from 7:00-9:00 pm. This event takes months of planning, coordination, and rehearsals so we would need someone to take over soon. Please contact Naomi Phaneuf if you are interested.

The Gates School Directory is Here!

Please make sure you download a copy of the Gates Elementary School 2017-2018 Students and Families Directory as this is the last time we will be advertising it the Gates Newsletter. Please note, this information should not be distributed outside of the Gates community, and is solely for the use of the Gates community.  All information provided was pulled from Power School, and is only made available by permissions granted in Power School.

If you would like your family's information updated or changed, please let Directory Chair Kara Bayer know. If there are enough corrections and updates to warrant, the PTO may choose to issue an updated Directory at the end of the first term.

Coming Up: Physical Education Night

Physical Education Night is almost here, we hope to see you November 8, 2017 from 6:30-7:30 pm in the Gates gymnasium. The goal is to educate the community on the most current practices used in today's elementary physical education and allow your family the opportunity to practice and demonstrate developmentally appropriate activities.

Please remember to wear clothing appropriate for movement. This event is for school-aged children only. We're looking forward to seeing you soon.
If you have any questions please contact Physical Education instructor Jill Reed.

Hello From the Health Office
We are happy to report very few illness trends so far this year.  However, we anticipate that illness will increase as time goes on.

The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. Flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, doctors' visits, and missed work and school due to flu.
Other ways to help prevent the spread of flu include good hand washing, staying at home when you are sick, and covering your nose and mouth when you cough and sneeze.

A reminder that when children have a fever, they need to be fever free without medication for 24 hours before returning to school.

Thank you,
Diane and Tory
Let's See Those Box Tops

Parents we are getting close to our next submission deadline for Box Tops on November 1st. So please send in your Box Tops. You can drop them off at either the box at the front office or at the box in Roche Bros. Please remember to trim the Box tops along the dotted edge. Every little bit helps.
