Scholastic Book Fair: Thank You for Your Support

Thank you to all the families that supported the Scholastic Book Fair by donating money to our coin drive, purchasing books at the fair, and volunteering your time to help during the week of the fair. Your help and support were greatly appreciated and enabled the Book Fair to be a great success!

Together we were able to make over $2,500 in profits which will help fund our Author Visit Program at Gates. Through the "All 4 Books" coin drive we were also able to allow teachers and specialists to select over $1,000 of new books from the fair for their classrooms, and Scholastic will be able to donate 1,000 books! to families in need. Additionally, Gates families generously donated 80 new books (worth over $700) to teachers and staff.

The fair is not just about raising money for our school, it promotes a love of books and reading for children, teachers, and families. It is always so rewarding to see the excitement on all the student's faces!

Thank you all for your support,
Jennine Redmond

All District Fundraising Event: Just a Few Days Left to Donate

As a community, all the schools in the Acton-Boxborough Regional School district are uniting together to help those affected by the recent hurricanes. We hope our effort will provide comfort and refuge in the event of future catastrophes.

The schools in the Acton-Boxborough Regional School district and administrative offices have collection boxes accepting cash and checks made payable to American Red Cross. All donations will be combined and a check will be issued on behalf of the district to disaster relief.
The Gates School will be collecting donations Monday, October 2, 2017- Tuesday, October 10, 2017.

Hello From the Health Office

We are working to increase awareness of head lice so that families may take steps at home to help prevent your child from becoming infested. Any time children come together, particularly at the start of the school year or following any social grouping like Girl/Cub Scouts, Brownies, Little League, dance groups, or sleepovers, detected head lice cases commonly increase. Recent studies show that head lice are seldom spread in the school setting.

What You Should Know About Lice
Direct, physical, head-to-head contact is the usual method of transmission. Lice do not jump or fly. They survive only for a short time away from the human head and have difficulty crawling or clinging to smooth surfaces. Check your child's head weekly for lice and/or nits (eggs). Mature lice, which are no bigger than a sesame seed, avoid light and are hard to see. Lice eggs or "nits" are usually found close to the scalp - usually within one quarter inch, and may be easier to spot behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. They appear as tiny whitish ovals that are "glued" to the hair shaft. They cannot easily be flicked away as dandruff can. Head lice do not transmit disease and are not a serious medical condition. They cannot survive on your pets.

What to Do if Your Child Has Lice
If you find head lice on your child, please notify the school and treat him/her with lice shampoo following the package instructions. A second treatment may be required in seven to ten days. Continue to examine the child and all family members for three weeks and treat only if live lice or if nits are found one quarter inch or less from the scalp. Check regularly and treat it quickly.

Help Keep Head Lice Off Your Child
  • Check your child's head weekly for signs of head lice.
  • Teach your child not to share or trade personal items such as hats, combs, brushes, headbands, and barrettes.
  • Contain long hair in braids or ponytails, especially in younger children.
  • Teach children to avoid head-to-head contact.

For more information regarding head lice or its treatment, please feel free to contact the school nurse or your local health department.

Thank you for your help and support.
