What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. I Corinthians 3:5–7
The apostle Paul wrote letters to Corinth’s church about God, Christ, and the Spirit’s power and gifts. Paul says that people are God’s servants, who each are given work to do. First Corinthians 3:5–7 tells that Paul planted and Apollos watered, emphasizing the importance of each person’s work. God made the seeds and plants grow, while people waited with faith that a seed would grow into a flower or possibly a fruit or vegetable. What is Faith is a children’s book explaining “Faith is seeing with your heart what you cannot see with your eyes. Faith is finding God’s love in your family and in your friends.”
Individual gifts and talents enable us to share God’s love in our church and community. Centennial Conversations recently asked a question about joys. Replies included kindness and welcome shown by RCPC people, ministers, and staff. Appreciation was expressed for people who volunteer and serve. Joys included friendships, groups, visits, calls, cards, and prayers. Thanks to each of you for sharing time, talents and gifts with our church family!
Centennial celebrations were followed by the writing of “A Common Prayer for the Next Century of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church”, which includes these words:
“Open our doors and our hearts to all who might enter here, teaching faith and trust in you and encouraging healing and wholeness in every form. May each day in your church be an opportunity to accompany the proud, the humble, the rich, and the poor. May our spirit respond to your call.”
-Betty Whitehead, Deacon

Congregational Retreat: Unplugged
March 14-16, 2025 at Massanetta Springs
"....and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Doesn't it feel like life gets faster and faster? The promises of contemporary society, technology, and convenience have not led us to spend more time in contemplation, recreation, and relationships. Instead, they have driven us to increase our capacity to produce and accomplish more. It feels like we are in an accelerated age and everything from the planet to our own lives is "burning out." Besides eternity with God, there is no way out of this modern malaise, but as Christians we are given moments of resonance, where the Good News of God interrupts the speeding up of life, surprises us, breaks in, and gives us a moment of rest. Such is our retreat in March—a moment of reflection, recreation, and rest—two days of resonance. Doesn't that sound wonderful? Join us this spring as we explore a life a little more "Unplugged" from the pressures, expectations, and envy of modern life. Register online at rcpres.org/retreat before January 31.

Fellowship Dinners - Wednesdays at 6:15 PM
Chicken Cordon Bleu sounds quite posh, but that will be the offering for our regular Fellowship Dinner on January 22. Vegetarians will opt for a squash casserole, and we’ll all enjoy scalloped potatoes, mixed veggies, and homemade bread. Dessert will be Dump Cake that’s actually delicious in spite of a silly name! Bring your containers from home if you need to do take-away, and sign up online or in the gathering area. Suggested donation is $8/person or $25/family. Register online at rcpres.org/dinner or in the Gathering Area by noon on Tuesday.
Menu 1/22 - Chicken Cordon Bleu, Scalloped Potatoes, Mixed Veggies, Homemade Bread, Dump Cake, squash Casserole
Takeout Meals: In our efforts to become an Earth Care Church, the Fellowship Committee asks you to please bring your own container if you would like a takeout meal on Wednesday nights. We thank you for your help with this.
Volunteers are always needed to help with various tasks including set-up, clean-up, serving, check-in,
and transporting leftovers to RAM House. Details and dates at the link below.

Winter VBS:
The Grandparent Effect
Saturday, February 8 – 9:00 AM–12:00 PM
Grandparents are one of the best support systems. They hold a lot of wisdom. Listening to their stories enriches our lives and guides us! Through their stories, grandparents pass on the legacy of our families from generation to generation. This means we will never forget where we came from … not just within our own families, but within the family of God! Grandparents encourage us and help us to grow in our faith and you can be sure they pray for us! This Winter VBS, we ask that each child participating either bring a grandparent or an older adult that serves that type of role in their life (this could be a neighbor, a church member, another family member, like an aunt or uncle). If you are not sure who your child can bring along, contact Leigh Sackett. She knows many people in the church who would want to spend the morning with your child at Winter VBS! During our morning together we will share stories of our faith, play fun games together, and create matching timelines as a way to learn more about each other! Registration: January 6-27 at tinyurl.com/WinterVBS2025

Sermon Series: Find Your People
Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors came out with a song in 2023 called “Find Your People.” In the lyrics, they talk about the kind of people we each need in our lives in order to know fullness, wholeness, and joy. From the beginning, the Church has been the community in which we “find our people,” and the Apostle Paul mentions many fellow travelers and co-laborers in the ministry who have enriched his life and enabled the Church to flourish. In these weeks, we will look at some of the people you find in the Christian community and how we might continue to nurture those relationships of grace and so manifest God’s purposes today.
January 19 - That’ll Call Your Bluff - Proverbs 27:6-10 & Galatians 2:11-14

More Profound Alleluia
Mondays, February 3-25, 5:30 PM—6:30 PM
Led by Dillon J. Swanson—Room 201. Have you ever wondered about how hymns and service music are selected for worship at RCPC or why? This four-week class is a discussion-based class about the types of music we sing from our hymnal as well as the discernment process for selecting music for worship. The final class session will be an exercise in hymn selection where the class will actively discern and choose the hymns for an upcoming Sunday. It is the hope that through this class, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the use of hymnody in our church and therefore sing “a more profound alleluia” together in worship.

What is RCPC Presbyterian Women (PW)?
Come join PW! We meet every 2nd Tuesday of the month, September-May, in the Fellowship Hall at 10:15 AM the next meeting is Tuesday, January 14.
What do we do? Presbyterian Women is the women’s organization of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and is organized at each level of the church –congregation, presbytery, synod, and national. RCPC PW receives support from all the levels. Our PW also supports the mission work of all the other levels through our Least Coin, Thank, Blanket and Birthday Offerings. This connection provides us with the opportunities for shared ideas and studies, events and networking with women across the country.
At our meetings, we have time for getting to know each other, sign cards for our members who have moved, are ill, or not able to come. We have a short business meeting, Bible Study led by Ruth Marple, a delicious lunch by Lisa Goad, and a delivery of lunch to our home-bound members. We also have a new night Circle that meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month after the Fellowship Dinner. We also continue to create special events for fun and fellowship!
Locally, we support the Salvation Army’s Turning Point for abused women and children with monthly donations towards their needs, and the delivery of donations to their safe location. We also are a member of Church Women United here in Roanoke which is an ecumenical, diverse group dedicated to peace and justice. At our Church, we prepare food and serve funeral receptions for those families who wish after the funeral service. We also do many pop-up jobs when called upon to do so in our church and community.
If you wish more information or want to join us, please call or email Marsha Ellison, Moderator at 540-588-4478 or mlrw1@aol.com

House of Bread
House of Bread has a new (large) group of women entering the winter baking program and is in need of mentors from the community. Some of the women are looking for help setting goals, writing resumes and preparing for job interviews; others are simply looking for connection and healthy relationships. The only requirements to be a mentor are 1-2 hours per week of your time and a willingness to engage in a relationship with one of our ladies. For more information about our mentoring program, please reach out to Lisa Goad ( lisa.goad@houseofbreadroaonke.com). And stay tuned for information about bread sales in February!

Sudanese/South Sudanese Mission Group
St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church is collecting donations for the Gadin family, a Sudanese family of 7. When they applied for their Green Cards, they wouldn’t accept either the physical exam they had before leaving for the US or the one they had when they arrived in Idaho. VHD has appealed the ruling to no avail. So they need $1800 to pay for the new physicals! Any donations towards that huge bill would certainly be appreciated.
There is a need for living room furniture, rugs and lamps for 3 families.
A new family needs someone to teach them English until they can begin their group class in three months. The couple is looking to seek better employment and overcome the language barrier. In Sudan, he was a Civil Engineer, and she was a History Teacher.
