While he was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers were standing outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” But to the one who had told him this, Jesus replied, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
-Matthew 12: 46-50

Mrs. Mayer played the piano for our children’s Sunday school class and accompanied the children’s choir. Her husband Ron coordinates my parents’ Sunday school class. Their daughter Maria married David Skipper and they helped as youth advisers for a year while I was a youth. When I was twelve, the Skippers were in a church supper club with my parents and brought their two-year-old Andy to dinner. I “babysat” him in the den while the adults had dinner together.

As Andy grew up, my mother and aunt taught him Sunday school. My mom brought his Confirmation Class to Atlanta to tour Columbia Seminary when I was a student and we talked about the call to ministry.

So we found out that Andy was in Roanoke for a three-year psychiatry rotation as part of his medical training at the University of Virginia. So we had him over for dinner last week. It was the witness of the Church that made that possible and the power of the risen Christ to intertwine families within the faith community. This is what we mean when we talk about being “brothers and sisters” to each other in the way Jesus understands family life.

Church isn’t a place we go to receive instruction and inspiration. It is the principal community to which we belong and a family we inherit in the waters of baptism.

I told someone later in the week, when I think about what I want to create as a pastor it is a community where, when my own children are young adults making their way in the world, someone who is currently a teenger at RCPC will find out when they’re in town and have them over for hamburgers on their back porch. Supporting and sustaining each other through the journey of life with grace and love- that’s all this is. When we love in this way we are doing the will of God.

O Lord,
May we remember that you have given us to one another in faith
To support
And love.
Bind us to each other and to new people
With the grace we know in Jesus Christ
And so know what it means to walk in your way and in your will.

Baby & Toddler Nursery - Volunteers Needed
We have re-opened our Baby and Toddler Nursery for the 10:00 AM worship services. Registration is no longer required. There are 4 spaces available in the Baby Nursery and 4 spaces available in the Toddler Nursery. We have two caregivers in each room. We have hired two Nursery Caregivers and are seeking to fill two more paid positions for our nursery. If you know someone who may be interested in this position, please let Leigh Sackett know leigh@rcpres.org

We are also seeking one adult volunteer each Sunday to serve in our nursery. This is a wonderful way to honor the vows of baptism and get to know the young families and the littlest ones of our church.

Sign-up here to volunteer or you can contact Leigh Sackett. Once you have signed up, Leigh will contact you with any additional information you need to know about volunteering in the nursery. Thank you for your consideration in being a part of this ministry!

School Supplies for the West End Center
West End Center for Youth is a non-profit organization located at the corner of Patterson Ave and 13th Street. The Center serves about 85 children in the West End area of Roanoke and beyond providing after-school care with homework tutoring and other opportunities to enrich their lives. RCPC has had a relationship supporting the endeavors of the center since its beginning. We have provided socks and underwear at Christmas, tutors to help with homework, school supplies and our Endowment Board helped the center to purchase minibusses to be able to transport the children to activities around the valley and most recently granted a large gift toward the bathroom/kitchen renovation. The West End Center Friends Mission Group would like to encourage you to participate in the July School Supplies Drive. There is a display set up in the Gathering Area with a complete list of the supplies needed. When a child has the materials needed to begin the school day he/she feels more confident and prepared to engage in the lessons. All supplies need to be brought to the church or West End Center by Sunday, July 25, in order for individual bags to be prepared for each child that will be specific to their school and grade. You may also send in a donation for school supplies. Use our online giving option or mail a check to the church. Be sure to mark in the note: WEC School Supplies. You can sponsor a child with what is requested by their teacher for about $50. This is also a perfect time to consider serving as a homework tutor at the center for the school year. A homework tutor sits with a child and helps the child focus to complete his/her assignments, and coaches the children in reading, learning math facts or studying for a test. It is helpful for the center to have mature tutors who come on a regular basis. Even one afternoon a week or month is very helpful on a regular basis. If you would like more information about tutoring or would like to sign up, please visit our table in the Gathering Area or call Susan Kessler (540-312-2331). We also welcome anyone who would like to be a part of the West End Center Friends Mission Group! Learn more and sign up at our table in the Gathering Area!
