At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. - Matthew 18: 1-5

Being a new dad, children are often on my mind these days. Our daughter, Josie, will be 8 months old this week, and one of my favorite activities since her arrival is re-reading classic children’s books from my childhood. The Little Engine that Could, Goodnight Moon, and The Hungry Caterpillar are some of my favorites. While I’m partial to the kids’ books, we have also been reading about parenting. A recent chapter discussed the vast amount of learning that takes place as children are constantly being introduced to new things and ideas. Some hypothesize this is one of the reasons time seems to pass slowly as we’re young and speed up with age. As adults, we recognize a sensation and have a response already programmed. Therefore, it’s easy to find yourself in auto-pilot mode as you go through your day-to-day routine. Or, perhaps another example could be going through the motions of your spiritual walk. When reading the Bible, listening to a sermon, or hearing a hymn that’s familiar, do you feel auto-pilot trying to kick in?

Watching how our daughter perceives the world has been an incredible reminder to do as Jesus said in Matthew – have an insatiable desire to explore every interaction and learn from the Lord.

God, thank you for children, and please help us to follow their lead and continually be fascinated by you.

Baby & Toddler Nursery - Volunteers Needed
We have re-opened our Baby and Toddler Nursery for the 10:00 AM worship services. Registration is no longer required. There are 4 spaces available in the Baby Nursery and 4 spaces available in the Toddler Nursery. We have two caregivers in each room. We have hired two Nursery Caregivers and are seeking to fill two more paid positions for our nursery. If you know someone who may be interested in this position, please let Leigh Sackett know leigh@rcpres.org

We are also seeking one adult volunteer each Sunday to serve in our nursery. This is a wonderful way to honor the vows of baptism and get to know the young families and the littlest ones of our church.

Sign-up here to volunteer or you can contact Leigh Sackett. Once you have signed up, Leigh will contact you with any additional information you need to know about volunteering in the nursery. Thank you for your consideration in being a part of this ministry!

“Growing Together” VBS in the Park
God has shared a big dream with you. It’s a dream in which all creation harmoniously lives together in God’s love. When you hear about this dream it takes root in you, grows, and produces even more seed! Outdoor Vacation Bible School: July 12-14 from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Fishburn Park. We will explore the Parable of the Sower, Mark 4:1-9. One of Jesus’ favorite gardening techniques is telling parables — simple stories with a twist. Parables spark our curiosity, surprise us, and turn our hearts toward Jesus. Our VBS for 2021 is open to rising Pre-K to Rising 5th graders of the church. Registration will begin in May. We will follow the COVID precautions set before us at the time of our VBS. To register your child please contact Leigh Sackett.
The recent RCPC Herald contained a note from Andy Travers reflecting on some of his experiences with mission endeavors in Haiti. The Haiti Mission Group this month asks for your help in providing for supplies to enclose with a block fence the site that includes the St. Timothee School (known by some in Roanoke as the Allison School) and the adjacent St. Timothee Church in order to help to use cemented blocks to cement the identity of those families who make up the community served there. It will take perhaps 5000 blocks to complete this project. Please help in the effort by buying some blocks with your contribution to this effort. Checks or other donations can be directed to RCPC, marked “Haiti Mission Group” and placed in the collection basket, sent electronically or delivered to the Church Office. Thanks for your consideration.
