Jane and I hiked the trail to the Cascades a couple of weekends ago. I have a backpack carrier for Jane, and we call our hikes “our adventures.” Jane is 32 lbs, so it is heavy work for me! I love our time together.

This particular Saturday Autumn needed a little break from the toddler life and I desperately needed time outside, out of reception of emails and phone calls, to clear my head. So I picked a hike that was a ways away and would take Jane and me a few hours to complete.

If you’ve hiked the Cascades trail, you know there’s two trails to get to the falls — the Upper Trail and Lower Trail. The signs at the trailhead told me that the Upper Trail is hard and the Lower Trail is a “scenic route.” I obviously opted for the scenic route. I quickly discovered that “scenic” means slippery rocks, narrow trails along the stream, and downed trees to scramble over or under. I encountered each of these with a toddler on my back, and many times I thought “this probably isn’t a good choice”…..

We eventually made it to the Cascades, had the time of our lives, and returned to our car to report to Autumn about the family that stopped their hike to hoist Jane and me over a tree, the teenagers that offered me a hand to keep me steady, and the family with two little ones that played with Jane in the water. All people we encountered that made our trip successful; we would not have completed our adventure without their help.

And I was thinking about how I started the day needing solitude. Craving solitude. But yet, there were times I absolutely needed other people.

In the Seekers class last Sunday we talked about Christian community after starting the book “Life Together” by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Bonhoeffer says that “[t]he physical presence of other Christians is a source of incomparable joy and strength to the believer.” Just as I so badly wanted to be all alone on the trail that day, so also do I have a desire to be on my own in life, to prove I’m strong and capable on my own two feet. Yet God has provided us this community of Christians to come alongside us when we need a hand over a log on the trail or to prop us up when we’re tipping over.

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” Psalm 133:1

Thank you Lord for providing a community fo believers where we can be supported and loved through all of life’s slippery trails. Praise God from whom this blessing flows!

“Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”
Nothing has motivated Fleming Rutledge in her preaching more than addressing people’s struggles with doubt. Now with a new preface from the author, Help My Unbelief speaks directly to the “faithful doubters” and the “unbelieving believers” of the church who wrestle with questions and uncertainties about Christian faith.
What if I’m not very religious?
Why isn’t it enough just to be good and loving?
Isn’t Christianity outmoded?
Can we still believe in the Resurrection today?
Fleming Rutledge approaches these questions with a combination of pastoral warmth and theological fearlessness, aligning herself with those seeking answers and pointing readers toward the One who creates and sustains faith. Join our senior pastor Andrew Whaley on Sunday mornings at 10:00 AM in room 202 beginning October 17 through November 21 to ask these questions, and find where God might just still be speaking. Email Andrew@rcpres.org to register.

Small Groups
Small Groups resumed last week. We have space for newcomers in several of our existing small groups, contact Leigh Sackett if you need more information! Being a part of a small group is an experience rich in personal connection and spiritual growth. In small groups we discuss what is shared in worship, therefore the experience of worship is more deeply ingrained into our minds and hearts. As we contemplate it all together the concepts take root and our faith grows! Weekly small group schedules:
Sunday: 10:00 AM-10:45 AM Sneak Peek (room 101)
Monday: 10:30 AM-12:00 PM Andrew Whaley (outside at Andrew’s house)
Tuesday: 4:30 PM-6:00 PM David Dixon (church parking lot)
8:00 PM Jennifer Bryant (rotating homes)
Wednesday: 7:00 PM-8:30 PM Leigh Sackett (library)
Friday: 10:00 AM Elise Hansard (parlor)
