This Week's Devotional

As I look out from a high place and have command of the vista, I can see the other hills and mountains that I have scaled, and it is easy to celebrate life.

It is also easy for me to forget that I have ascended none of these hills and mountains without the direction and strength of Almighty God, and that between each mountain, there are valleys through which my God has carried me.

There are no heights without depths, there are no mountains without valleys, because each relies on the other for definition. And while it is understandable to celebrate the peaks, I also celebrate the valleys since that is often where I draw closer to God, and learn the lessons that make the mountains possible.

Walking through the valley can be challenging: it is often dark (in the shadow of the mountains on either side) and the path can be narrow (requiring me to walk alone with God). But the valley is often fertile (it is where the eroded soil comes to rest after the rain) and bears good fruit.

  • Today, I declare all of my valleys to be under the shadow of the Almighty and to be places of great abundance as I spend time in prayer and thanksgiving.
  • Today, I confirm that, guided by the Most High God, I walk through the valley, with no intention of pitching a tent or building a home there.
  • Today, I stand – with joy – on the other side of the valley, ready to begin the work of ascent of the next mountain.
  • Today, I declare that, cradled in the arms of my Good Father, my life is blessed, all is well, and I am safe.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me” — Psalm 23:4
