Dear
Friends
,
Sunday was our second annual Reading
and Reception of Write
It!, our Rising Writers
Zine. It was an amazing celebration of talent from our
youth. They each read their submission, either a poem, an essay or
a short story, with poise that belies their youth. We
are very proud everyone.

Congratulations to Helena Balch, Emily
Barbato, Catherine Bialkowski, Thea Flurry, Daniel W. Galef,
Matthew Gleason, Song Griffin Grenoble, Rachel Halpern, Osceola
Charles Heard, Katherine Heyman, Tashiyanah Hutchins, Christine
Lavosky, Rachel Mellicker, Cara Meyer, Allison O'Donnell, Grace
Piehl, Lena Rawley, and Tess Schatz.
We hope you can make it out to meet
our authors this week. Each event is a celebration of their art,
join us!

An Evening of Song
Mark Rotella
Amore: The Story of Italian American
Song
Tuesday, Sept 28, 7-8pm
A love song to
Italian American culture and postwar America. "In this lively
anecdotal history, full of engaging profiles and nice
autobiographical touches, Mark Rotella explores how a whole wave of
hugely talented Italian-American singers dominated the pop charts
in the 1940s and 1950s with sounds that have set a standard ever
since." -Morris Dickstein, author of Dancing in the Dark
Reading and Discussion
Jenna Blum
The Stormchasers
Wednesday, Sept 29, 7-8pm
NY
Times bestselling author of Those Who Save Us, Jenna Blum
returns to our humble bookshop to share her remarkable new novel.
Stormchaser is the story
of the special connection between twins, an honest depiction of
mental illness, and the power of extreme weather all in this
must-read book. This is a
wonderful opportunity to visit with Jenna. Stormchaser is perfect for book
groups, and perfect for a quiet read by yourself.
Reading and Discussion
Fawzia Afzal-Khan
Lahore with Love
Growing Up with Girlfriends,
Pakistani-Style
Thursday, Sept 30, 7-8pm
For women growing
up in Pakistan's patriarchal, segregated society, it is not
surprising that female friendships take on a deep, enduring
resonance. These relationships, formed in adolescence and nurtured
into adulthood, give Montclair State University Professor
Afzal-Khan the strength to be defiant, a wry sense of humor to
weather the contradictions in daily Pakistani life, and memories to
sustain her as she continues to straddle two continents and two
cultures.
