I moved out of Brooklyn last week. In many ways it was a difficult experience (and in others, it went pretty well). As with most everything in my life, lately, I found in the process of moving and what followed, a direct connection to Feldenkrais work. I just posted a piece about it on my blog. If you'd care to take a look, click here.

But enough about my favorite subject.... Our theme for July is "spontaneity." I'll have more to say on that next week. For now, though, we've made Ruthy Alon's CD set, Grammar of Spontaneity, Part I, the July Product of the Month. It's a great set of Awareness Through Movement lessons and you can get the set at a discount this month. Details are below.

Don't forget, the Feldenkrais Institute's first Four-Day ATM Intensive begins this Thursday, July 5th, with co-founders, David Zemach-Bersin and Marek Wyszynski. Find out what it's like to immerse yourself in Awareness Through Movement. It'll bring you to a whole new level of appreciation for the transformative power of the Feldenkrais Method. Take a look at all the details in the article below.

For three consecutive Tuesday evenings in July I'm going to tackle my favorite subject with Summer Spine Essentials. All three evenings will be devoted to improving the way you use your spine in ways that will lead you to greater freedom and pleasure in every movement you do. The earlybird deadline for the first evening is tomorrow. All the details on Summer Spine Essentials are below.

On Thursday evening, July 19th, Connie Rotunda will be back for the first of two related workshops on improving the flexibility and function of your hip joints. Connie has a very gentle and poetic style of teaching Feldenkrais. She's a teacher who, if you haven't experienced her, is not-to-be-missed. Connie will follow-up her July 19th evening with a day-long Saturday workshop on the same subject on August 4th. All the details are below.

On Tuesday July 31st, Zoe will bring you her insight into Posture. Posture is a topic we're revisiting several times this year. When we ask people what aspect of themselves they'd like to improve, "posture," is among the most common responses. Each of us who teach at The Feldenkrais Institute has a slightly different perspective on how to become more aware of and improve your posture. Come learn what Zoe has to offer on the subject on the 31st. Details are below.

As always, thanks so much for reading.  We hope to see you soon.

All the best,

Restore and Rejuvenate in New York City:
A Four-Day
Awareness Through Movement

July 5th - 8th
with David Zemach-Bersin & Marek Wyszynski

The Feldenkrais Method is an exploration and a celebration of our human potential for change, improvement and learning. We each become limited by habitual ways of feeling, moving and acting but the Feldenkrais Method demonstrates that there is nothing permanent about even our most ingrained habits. Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais created over a thousand effective exercises, each one designed to use the plasticity of our brain, to improve a different aspect of our body's function and comfort.

This special Summer Awareness Through Movement Intensive will feature powerful Feldenkrais exercises that will provide you with an opportunity to achieve real and lasting change. Often, the relief and improvement we experience after doing a Feldenkrais exercise is lost when we return to our busy lives. This problem is solved if we allow ourselves a more sustained approach, a deeper 'immersion' in Awareness Through Movement. In this unique workshop, our old patterns of posture, chronic pain and tension will be reduced cumulatively, and replaced by new, more comfortable options. Intrinsically self-respecting and nourishing, you will find this deep immersion in the Feldenkrais Method profoundly worthwhile and valuable.

To support your success, each participant in the Summer ATM Intensive will have an opportunity to receive individual Feldenkrais Functional IntegrationSM treatments, before or after class, from our experienced staff at a discounted rate. You must call 212-727-1014 to book FIs in advance.

For those who live outside the New York City area, the Summer ATM Intensive presents an opportunity to enjoy a restorative and rejuvenating vacation, combining the benefits of doing Feldenkrais exercises during the day, with enjoying the sights and sounds of New York, at night. If you are a resident of New York, the Summer ATM Intensive is an opportunity to treat yourself to a 'staycation' during which you'll fully immerse yourself in the richness of the Feldenkrais Method, improving both your physical comfort, and sense of well-being. At the end of this four-day Feldenkrais experience, you will feel truly different... truly changed... truly better.

Summer Spine Essentials

with Mark Hirschfield

July 10-Twisting, Turning, and Side-Bending (Rotation and Lateral Flexion)

July 17-Forward and Back (Flexion/Extension)

July 24-Putting it All Together

The spine is a beautiful and complex structure, comprising 24 bones that work in harmony to support all your movement. Improving your ability to use your spine can lead to greater comfort not only in your neck and back, but also in your hips, knees, ankles, and feet.  A healthy, well-organized spine can make all of your movements seem effortless and more enjoyable.

In Summer Spine Essentials, you will use Feldenkrais exercises to integrate the movements of your spine, creating a strong yet free central axis to support everything you do.  Join Mark to experience the sublime freedom that a well-functioning spine can offer.

We recommend that you attend all three workshops if possible, but each evening will provide benefit on its own.

Participants will learn:

  • How to organize your spine for greater ease in standing, sitting, and walking.
  • How to avoid the unconscious postural patterns which can lead to injury and cause back pain.
  • How to increase flexibility in all your bending and turning movements.
  • Effective exercises to help you to maintain vitality and ease in your spine, and through out your body.

Each evening can be taken on its own

but you'll have the best experience if you attend all three!

Hip Hips, Hooray!
Two Feldenkrais Workshops to Increase the
Flexibility and Function of Your Hips
with Connie Rotunda

Nestled within your pelvis, your hip joints play a vital role in your body's comfort and function. As our body's largest weight-bearing joints, their organization in relation to the rest of our body, is very important. When they are functioning efficiently, our hip joints support the stability and flexibility of our upper body, and absorb the force transmitted through our skeleton as we sit, stand and walk. When our hip joints do notfunction well or easily, we experience inflammation and discomfort.  Each year, close to 200,000 Americans have hip joint replacement surgery. With better organization of the hip-joints, many surgeries can be avoided.

In these special Feldenkrais workshops, you will learn effective exercises to improve the organization of your hips in relation to the rest of your body, increase your stability and flexibility, and improve the comfort and function of your hip joints.

Participants will learn:

  • How to establish a healthy, protective relationship between your hips, knees and ankles.
  • How integrating the movement of your neck, chest and shoulders with your hip-joints, can help them to support and keep you balanced.
  • Useful tips for supporting the spine and keeping it flexible.

We recommend attending both workshops, but each one will stand on its own.

Feldenkrais Perspectives for Better Alignment

with Zoe Schieber

Posture matters.  Posture is the way we organize our skeleton and musculature to carry ourselves through life. Our posture can have a profound impact on our comfort, mobility, and basic sense of self. Good posture allows us to move and function with ease, stability, flexibility, and comfort.

But, many of us develop poor posture, which can worsen with time. We are often unaware of our postural habits, until we feel tension, pain and discomfort. Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais created many Awareness Through Movement exercises which offer specific and innovative strategies for improving posture. ATM uses the remarkable quality of our brain called 'neuro-plasticity', to quickly change our postural habits.

In this special Feldenkrais workshop, you will:

  • Improve your skeletal alignment.
  • Learn how to improve your posture in both sitting and standing.
  • Develop an awareness of your postural tendencies and how to change them.
  • Discover how dynamic our posture is, and how easily it can improve.
  • Learn how ATM exercises can help you to feel and look great.
