Thank you from the ACPE Foundation

The Foundation for ACPE is grateful for our donors. During #ACPEproud week, 50 people attended the Donor Appreciation event . Donors learned about the impact of their gifts through the Innovative Program Awards, Boisen Scholars and ACPE students serving on the front lines of the Covid-19 pandemic. We also "danced" to the virtual tunes of Kool & the Gang's "Celebration" and had fun playing #ACPEproud Trivia: Donor Edition. We raised close to $4,000 in gifts and pledges.
Here's a story of an ACPE student making a difference on the front lines of the Covid-19 pandemic. Give today in support of the next generation of spiritual care professionals.

Second quarter accreditation fee invoices will be sent by the end of this week. Third quarter billing will resume as regularly scheduled in October. After almost 25 years, ACPE upgraded its database. On August 5th, ACPE launched Nimble AMS built on Salesforce. In conjunction with the launch of the new database, ACPE also introduced a new website (a necessary move because the website is built on the database). You can still find us at www.acpe.edu. Check out our new look!

ACPE's Advocacy Committee, Curriculum Committee, and Anti-Bias Task Force is presenting a series of eight pre-recorded webinars addressing issues of race and racism. No registration is required; each is a self-guided endeavor.
Based on feedback, the 8:46 series is pausing delivery of new content briefly, to allow for absorption of the content already delivered, and to make a little breathing space for those of us orienting fall students.
Subsequent episodes will drop on a roughly every-other-week schedule. Stay tuned!

Much has been made of the bread baking activities of so many people during the pandemic. Perhaps cooking at home will continue to flourish during this time, especially with so many shows, competitions, and foodie adventures streaming across multiple channels and platforms. Some of this effort, however, if entirely seasonal, and we are about to re-enter apple season. This poem from Joyce Sutphen sets us up beautifully for what is to come:

Apple Season
by Joyce Sutphen
The kitchen is sweet with the smell of apples, big yellow pie apples, light in the hand, their skins freckled, the stems knobby and thick with bark, as if the tree could not bear to let the apple go. Baskets of apples circle the back door, fill the porch, cover the kitchen table.
My mother and my grandmother are running the apple brigade. My mother, always better with machines, is standing at the apple peeler; my grandmother, more at home with a paring knife, faces her across the breadboard. My mother takes an apple in her hand,
She pushes it neatly onto the sharp prong and turns the handle that turns the apple that swivels the blade pressed tight against the apple's side and peels the skin away in long curling strips that twist and fall to a bucket on the floor. The apples, coming off the peeler,
Are winding staircases, little accordions, slinky toys, jack-in-the-box fruit, until my grandmother's paring knife goes slicing through the rings and they become apple pies, apple cakes, apple crisp. Soon they will be married to butter and live with cinnamon and sugar, happily ever after.

As the end of my year-long CPE residency draws near, I reflect upon a multitude of profound experiences. I've affectionately called this CPE residency "Human School" because it is an education on the experience of being human. I've had a course load that includes such classes as Grief and Loss 101, Adapting and Adjusting, Managing Complicated Family Relationships, Emotional Responses to Physical Limitations, and, my favorite, "What Now?": Living Your Best Life from Your Recliner. I did some additional required reading. While truly informative, I would not recommend Humiliation in the Workplace , Witnessing Chronic Pain , or Loving Someone Who Can't Remember You: A Loved One's Guide to Alzheimer's. We don't always get to choose our courseload or our professors, but I have received a remarkable education this past year. In fact, I attended a portion of a time-limited seminar called Emotional Regulation in a World Pandemic. There were also some interesting guest lectures I had the chance to sit in on, like Reckoning with Your Whiteness (Geriatric Edition).

August 29
A day of fasting observed on the 10th day of the month of Muharram to celebrate Moses' exodus from Egypt. For Shi'a Muslims, it also marks the climax of the ten-day Remembrance of Muharram, which mourns the martyrdom of Hussein at the Battle of Kerbala
Beheading of John the Baptist (Christianity) This day commemorates the martyrdom of St. John the Baptist, a mission preacher and religious figure. Jesus was among the many people that John baptized in the Jordan River. He was imprisoned by Herod Antipas, because he publicly disapproved of Herod's divorce and unlawful remarriage. Herod feared that John would lead a revolt, thus had him executed. |
