"The Girl & The Shape and other recent objects" by Paul L. Nettles
Gallery ONe Eleven
111 3rd St. Leesville, LA
Exhibit Dates: Sept. 7th-Oct. 12th
GALLERY ONE EIIIEVEN in Leesville will open their Fall/Winter season with an exhibition by Paul J. Nettles of Alexandria. Paul produces photos, oil paintings, and found-object sculptures “as a means of coping in a world that seems determined to drive itself to destruction by the fastest means available.” His nature causes him to be aggressively, obsessively pushed to create as fast and as much as possible. By working with detritus, reclaimed materials, and antique film equipment (eschewing digital shortcuts), he forces himself to work within rigorously self-imposed frameworks. These intentional barricades force him to move carefully, to think about every step of the process, and how the outcome will appear long before he cuts the pieces for a box, or works with simple, restrictive camera bodies and lenses. In this way he can put far more care into how an object is recorded or built to make the most of the limited materials while staying true to his gut instincts.
The Girl & The Shape series in this exhibit combines a childhood place and its attendant pleasures, discord, and anxiety with obsessional behavior patterns. The familiarity of the space allowed for external exploration of a part of himself that has long shaped Nettles as a person, utilizing both a found object and, rare in his work, a human subject. In the Found Object Sculptures, items that Paul has collected over the decades are all part of a system of pattern seeking, repetition of movement or visual stimuli channeled into the work itself.
Paul has frequently been juried into the Alexandria Museum of Art’s September Competition, has appeared in the Tom Peyton Memorial Art Festival, and River Oaks 5x5x5 Competitions on multiple occasions. He currently works at the Alexandria Veteran’s Administration Medical Center as a Tai Chi instructor and serves as the operator of the AMoA’s Iris M. Rayford Museum Store. Paul’s exhibit will be at GALLERY ONE EIIIEVEN in Leesville from September 7 – October 12, Thursday through Saturday.

ARTS COUNCIL UPDATES & JOB OPPORTUNITIES | | |
Arts Council Update!
The Arts Council of Central Louisiana (ACCL) is pleased to announce that we were awarded a 2023 Emergency Planning Grant of $5,000.00 to support our emergency planning efforts by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH). With these funds, the ACCL was able to prepare for emergencies and natural disasters by providing first aid and disaster response training for our staff, as well as create an Emergency Pocket Plan and an Employee Emergency Handbook that list procedures to follow in the event of an emergency or accident.
Our new Emergency Pocket Plan and Employee Emergency Handbook will ensure that the ACCL will be able to continue its mission to support the Arts Organizations throughout Region 6 and mitigate any damage incurred to organization assets or personnel in the event of an emergency or natural disaster. The first aid training will prove to be incredibly useful for our facilities as we bring in professional touring productions and a wide variety of local performers and organizations to our venues regularly throughout the year. The grant funds allowed us to assemble fully stocked trauma bags to ensure that our staff can provide first aid to performers and guests in the event of an emergency or accident. We are grateful to be able to provide the reassurance and peace of mind these new skills and techniques allow for to all our partners and staff.
Funding for this emergency plan has been provided by the State of Louisiana and administered by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH).
The views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this document do not necessarily represent those of either the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities or the State of Louisiana.
