Change
This Sunday we begin a new series considering how faith helps us navigate change in our world and in our relationship to God. To be alive is to experience change, and yet significant change can also cause us anxiety. As pastor and theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr first wrote in the 'Serenity Prayer,' "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." This prayer seems as fitting for our time as it was decades ago when Niebuhr first shared it.
Throughout this series, we will look at various stories in the Bible for what they tell us about change and faith - especially where God adjusts a covenant, or promise, in order to remain in relationship with God's people. As it says in our Communion liturgy, "When we turned away and our love failed, your love [O God] remained steadfast." (UMH 13). While much in our world changes, God continues to pursue us with love and invite us into relationship; we do not face a changing world alone. See you Sunday!
Blessings,
Jessica

New Book Study: Becoming Nicole
You're invited to join Pastor Jessica for a book study on New York Times bestselling book, "Becoming Nicole: The Inspiring Story of Transgender Actor-Activist Nicole Maines and Her Extraordinary Family." We will gather for this 4-week discussion group via Zoom, and talk through the book at a high level for the first half of each meeting. In the second half of each gathering we will consider the implications this story has for us as a reconciling church, and our call to welcome, affirm, and support the families among us, in addition to those whom we are called to serve and celebrate in the neighborhoods where we live. Please obtain the book ahead of the start of the class, and read chapters 1-11.
