Amy Greene Board Chair |
I just got back from the Association of Professional Chaplains meeting in Orlando and I could not be more excited about our future as colleagues in spiritual care and education. There were great speakers such as:
- Jan Holton of Duke Divinity School (look for her book "Longing for Home" from her work with refugees)
- Stalwart friend of our profession, Christina Pulchalski, MD, of the George Washington Institute for Spirituality and Health
- Humanist chaplains Greg Epstein of Harvard University and Jason Callahan of Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center

On behalf of the Partners for Professional Excellence in Spiritual Care (Partners), we invite submission of proposals for Professional Development Intensives (also called Pre/Post Conference workshops) which are eight- and four-hour sessions and 90 Minute Workshops for our 2020 Joint Conference, May 11-14 in Cleveland, Ohio. Intensives will begin on May 10.
The 2020 Joint Conference Theme is 20/20 Vision: The Future of Spiritual Care which invites you to share your expertise, inspire colleagues, stimulate thoughtful discussion, and educate others on important issues within institutional chaplaincy/spiritual care and psycho spiritual therapy.
Our goals at the 2020 Conference will be:
|
- Share leading practices in research, professional development, and credentialing
- Strengthen professional relations
- Focus our time, talents and resources on those most vulnerable
- Grow our practical and professional skills

We also want proposals that recognize, engage, and expand the diversity within our field, for example: international or intercultural collaborations; military, prison, outpatient, or workplace chaplains; care for pediatric, geriatric, rural, newly immigrated, or indigenous populations; chaplains/spiritual care providers familiar with misunderstood spiritual/religious constituencies; chaplaincy care with LGBTQ sensibilities; how race, gender, sexuality, or disability relate to spiritual care; one-person departments; retirement; etc.

| Want to keep expanding your LGBTQI competency? |
Did you know that ACPE's
Code of Ethics now includes in its nondiscrimination clause not just sexual orientation but also gender identity and gender expression (Standard 101.2)? LGBTQI persons are increasingly visible in many CPE settings. Some ACPE Certified Educators are eager to learn more about supervising LGBTQI students, or helping students learn to offer spiritual care to LGBTQI persons. Many educators are eager for consultation on supervising CPE groups containing both LGBTQI and straight/gender conforming students, some of whom come from religious traditions that exclude LGBTQI persons from full participation in religious life.
Members of the LGBTQI Community of Practice are available as resources to you! All of us are learning, and we are glad to offer ourselves as conversation partners at this growing edge of our practice. Consider reaching out to:

Thank you to everyone who attended the workshop on Building Your Center's Portfolio at the annual conference. I hope that you found it meaningful and helpful as you tell your center's story. The PowerPoint of the workshop, as well as some additional materials have been uploaded to SharePoint. We will also be recording a modified version of the workshop for those who were not able to attend, as, while the slides are good, the commentary is better!

| Updates to the Manual: Use of Clinical Materials Consent Form |
ACPE has implemented a new Use of Clinical Materials Consent Form that is now required to be signed by all students prior to formal admission to a CPE program and at the start of each subsequent unit. The Use of Clinical Materials Consent Form is required for all students in all units of CPE, not just those that are facilitated by a CEC. The Use of Clinical Materials Consent Form also informs students that their materials, with personal information redacted, may be used in the Certification process, in the Peer Review process, as part of a center's Accreditation Portfolio, and for ACPE approved research studies.
For more information on this update, as well as other manual updates, and to download the new form, please see the Updates to the Manuals page.

No matter where you stand politically, it is clear that the world is not as it should be. As our nation celebrates its birth this coming week, may we also look to the nation we long to be, the home we profess to be but so often fall short. It is noteworthy that this poem dates from the 1950s, a time of so much hope and longing for a new post-war world. So as you raise a cup of something to celebrate with family and friends, may this poem point your heart, mind and spirit to the "not yet" of who we might be together:

I Am Waiting
By Lawrence Ferlinghetti
I am waiting for my case to come up
and I am waiting
for a rebirth of wonder
and I am waiting for someone
to really discover America
and wail
and I am waiting
for the discovery
of a new symbolic western frontier
and I am waiting
for the American Eagle
to really spread its wings
and straighten up and fly right
and I am waiting
for the Age of Anxiety
to drop dead
and I am waiting
for the war to be fought
which will make the world safe
for anarchy
and I am waiting
for the final withering away
of all governments
and I am perpetually awaiting
a rebirth of wonder
I am waiting for the Second Coming
and I am waiting
for a religious revival
to sweep thru the state of Arizona
and I am waiting
for the Grapes of Wrath to be stored
and I am waiting
for them to prove
that God is really American
and I am waiting
to see God on television
piped onto church altars
if only they can find
the right channel
to tune in on
and I am waiting
for the Last Supper to be served again
with a strange new appetizer
and I am perpetually awaiting
a rebirth of wonder
I am waiting for my number to be called
and I am waiting
for the Salvation Army to take over
and I am waiting
for the meek to be blessed
and inherit the earth
without taxes
and I am waiting
for forests and animals
to reclaim the earth as theirs
and I am waiting
for a way to be devised
to destroy all nationalisms
without killing anybody
and I am waiting
for linnets and planets to fall like rain
and I am waiting for lovers and weepers
to lie down together again
in a new rebirth of wonder
I am waiting for the Great Divide to be crossed
and I am anxiously waiting
for the secret of eternal life to be discovered
by an obscure general practitioner
and I am waiting
for the storms of life
to be over
and I am waiting
to set sail for happiness
and I am waiting
for a reconstructed Mayflower
to reach America
with its picture story and tv rights
sold in advance to the natives
and I am waiting
for the lost music to sound again
in the Lost Continent
in a new rebirth of wonder
I am waiting for the day
that maketh all things clear
and I am awaiting retribution
for what America did
to Tom Sawyer
and I am waiting
for Alice in Wonderland
to retransmit to me
her total dream of innocence
and I am waiting
for Childe Roland to come
to the final darkest tower
and I am waiting
for Aphrodite
to grow live arms
at a final disarmament conference
in a new rebirth of wonder
I am waiting
to get some intimations
of immortality
by recollecting my early childhood
and I am waiting
for the green mornings to come again
youth's dumb green fields come back again
and I am waiting
for some strains of unpremeditated art
to shake my typewriter
and I am waiting to write
the great indelible poem
and I am waiting
for the last long careless rapture
and I am perpetually waiting
for the fleeing lovers on the Grecian Urn
to catch each other up at last
and embrace
and I am awaiting
perpetually and forever
a renaissance of wonder
