Over the last five months, it has given me an enormous sense of pride and joy to see so many of our members profiled in the news, leading webinars, and serving in ways that demonstrate the quality and character of ACPE's work across the years. While we are in a moment, our members have been preparing for it for decades, engaging in action-reflection-action in ways that other professions have looked to as a model of their own development. Your work exemplifies the quality of spiritual care that our world needs, the kind of embodied compassion that this world desperately needs in a time such as this. And we know that this moment is not over. Our members will be called upon to lead, to adapt, to create new practices, and to support students, clients, and colleagues often in ways that feel paradoxically so different and yet so familiar.

Pitts Library receives 3,000 items from ACPE Retired Educator
|
 |
|
 |
Thomas Summers
|
The Pitts Library of the Candler School of Theology (Emory University) has placed in its
archives the papers and materials from the career of the Rev. Dr. Thomas A. (Tom) Summers. He was a graduate of the seminary in 1959.
As a United Methodist minister, he spent the major portion of his vocation in mental health chaplaincy and clinical pastoral education. He retired in 1999 from the South Carolina Department of Mental Health.
Tom became a Certified Educator in 1965 in the Council for Clinical Training prior to its merger into ACPE.
The archived materials in the Special Collections area of the Pitts Library contain approximately 3,000 items. Contained are such features as his publications, correspondence, newspaper articles, workshops, organizational life, pastoral care materials, conference presentations, photographs and other matters.
A prominent theme in the collection is his longtime interest and activity in the integration of social justice with his ministry. Focused are such issues as the LGBTQ community, environmental justice, immigration, the severely mentally ill, antiwar protest, Medicaid
expansion and racial healing.
He was awarded with the Alumni Distinguished Service Award (In Service to
the Community) by Candler in 2012.
He and his wife Marilyn Boyd Summers have resided in Columbia, South Carolina for the
past fifty-four years.

#ACPEproud, August 3-7, 2020, is a week-long celebration, education, and advocacy event to encourage support of clinical pastoral education, spiritually integrated psychotherapy, and the spiritual care community. ACPE is proud of our students, graduates, and members.
#ACPEproud will highlight the meaningful ways our members and accredited centers heal, strengthen, and transform people and communities in the US and across the globe.
During the week, ACPE will recognize our newly certified members and newly accredited centers, celebrate our awardees, install a new board chair, and honor our members who died during the last year. Throughout the campaign, ACPE will provide tools for you to share with your institutions and communities about the positive effects of spiritual care for patients and society.

As ACPE is in the process of transitioning to a new database, quarterly billing for accreditation fees for the period 4/1/2020 to 6/30/2020 will be delayed by one month. We expect to send the invoices out by August 15, 2020. This will not change any other quarterly billing.
Thank you for your understanding and patience as we improved our systems to better serve you. If you questions about the quarterly billing, please send them to accounting@acpe.edu.

Amidst so much that feels so overwhelming, the deaths of three significant civil rights leaders - Emma Sanders, CT Vivian, and John Lewis (who was also the US Congressional Representative for the district that includes the ACPE office) - these words from Maya Angelou speak into this moment, naming the grief, honoring their witness, and offering hope:
When Great Trees Fall
Maya Angelou
When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.
When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.
When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.
Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance, fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance of
dark, cold
caves.
And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.

We have been searching for silver linings of the pandemic, quarantines, and lockdowns. One such story comes from Glacier Bay, where the significant decline in ocean traffic has allowed scientists to hear the communication of whales very differently. Here's the story:
|
Remember the story of the Elephant and the six blind people. In their tactile exploration of the elephant each one "sees" a very different elephant. One sees a snake, another a wall, a third a thin narrow rope, and so on. The lesson is obvious.
Here we are, about to begin the third unit of our Cleveland Clinic Chaplain Residency and the world is turned upside down. At first we were asked to visit patients with discretion, being sure to keep the proper six feet distance. Next we were asked to say hello to patients from the doorway of the room, and finally we are not permitted in the hospital at all! (Understandably for our own safety and that of our patients). Our Resident class day for unit 3 was suspended until further notice and rather quickly we began to work from home doing virtual "visits" to patients and families or to call them on the phone. We were blind, at least I was! We were blind in front of the elephant, Covid-19.

July 23 Haile Selassi I Birthday (Rastafarianism) This day celebrates Haile Selassie, the Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974, who was believed to be an incarnation of God, or Jah, for Rastafarians. Thus, Haile Selassi is seen as part of the Holy Trinity.
July 24 Pioneer Day (Mormon Christianity) Pioneer Day commemorates the arrival of the first Mormon wagon train into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Some Latter Day Saints recognize this holiday by walking the Pioneer trail and reenacting the events of '47. Although Pioneer Day started as a celebration for Mormon pioneers, this day is now a state holiday in Utah that recognizes pioneers from all faiths and cultural backgrounds. Celebrations include fireworks, food, rodeos, intertribal powwows, and more.
July 25 St. James the Great Day (Christianity) July 25th is the feast day for St. James the Great, the patron saint of Spain. One of the twelve apostles, James was also known for being a valiant knight and for preaching the gospel in Spain. He was executed by sword in Jerusalem - by order of Agrippa I and thus became the first martyred saint. His body was returned to Spain, where many make pilgrimages to visit.

ACPE: The Standard for Spiritual Care & Education
ACPE is the standard for spiritual care and education. Our diverse membership includes Certified CPE Educators, Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapists, Spiritual Care Professionals and Practitioners, Pastoral Counselors, Chaplains, Faith Communities, and Seminaries. Our multi-disciplinary, multi-faith, multi-racial community of professionals provides education, connection, and formation through continuing education, networking, and leadership development.
ACPE is the premier, Department of Education recognized, organization that provides the highest quality CPE programs for spiritual care professionals of any faith and in any setting. We do this through a rigorous accreditation and certification process for centers and educators that provide CPE.
The depth of our training enables students to realize their full potential to strengthen the spiritual health of people in their care as well as themselves.
ACPE members are actively engaged in a wide variety of professional development activities including communities of practice, conferences, spiritual care research, and informal networking. We are more than just an association: we are a movement committed to the transformation of the human suffering. Our opportunities for formation and community enrich our member's work of healing and transforming people and communities in the US and across the globe.
