Last Chance Chamber Discount Ski Pass

I don't truly believe that anyone still doesn't know that Chamber members receive a nice discount off their seasonal ski passes. Just in case though, here's my last announcement of the year: This Friday, November 14, is the absolute deadline to buy Chamber Discount Ski Passes. If you're not a Basalt Chamber member and want to take advantage of this wonderful Chamber-Aspen Skiing Company benefit, contact us by Friday, sign up and pick up your discounted pass voucher. Then be sure to get to the SkiCo ticket office by closing on Friday. There's more info below, along with a link to SkiCo's detailed letter. And, of course, most important is that you join us at the Chamber!

Just as the Downtown Area Advisory Committee is building impressive steam, an intriguing announcement was made Thursday afternoon by Michael McVoy, president of the nonprofit Roaring Fork Community Development Corp (RFCDC), that could fundamentally affect the future of the area under consideration. RFCDC has signed an agreement with Lowe Enterprises, a major Aspen developer, to look at development options on roughly 2.6 acres of former Pan and Fork Mobile Home Park closest to Two Rivers Road.

Lowe Enterprises is a respected, diversified national real estate organization with success in development, management, and asset management related to properties emerging from receivership such as Snowmass' Base Village. RFCDC is a nonprofit organization created jointly by Healthy Mountain Communities and The Manaus Fund to "catalyze and implement community-based ventures that create affordable residential, commercial, and community spaces and to improve the health and welfare of people and communities in the Roaring Fork and Colorado River Valleys." A mix of housing and a "boutique hotel" are favored over retail and commercial development, though the evaluative process is only just beginning.

From the Chamber's perspective, this is an interesting and promising collaboration, and one that we will watch closely. (See the "Basalt In The News" section below for more information.)

Two New Businesses Bring Excitement to Downtown Basalt

As we consider the future of the critical Pan & Fork site, two new businesses are setting up shop in downtown Basalt: Faboo, a wild and chic clothing store by the equally wild and wonderful Monika Oginski, celebrates its grand opening on November 21 (though no need to wait until then to stop by!), and Dusty Locker, Gretta McKinney's new consignment young folks sports clothing store, is taking shape. Two dynamic women. Two shops from one end of Midland Avenue to the other. Keep an eye out for their special openings and check out their great offerings. I'm excited!

"Community Input Remains at the Heart of Shaping (Downtown) Basalt"

Basalt voters approved three ballot issues in last week's voting: a five percent sales tax on recreational marijuana, an addition to the lodging tax, and reducing the residency requirement for voting to 22 days making it consistent with the state.

The Town continues to collect community input with the first of two surveys on the "Our Town Planning" process sent at the end of October to Basalt households. If you're within the Town of Basalt and have questions on the survery, call Denise at Town Hall, 927-4701. To follow the progress of the Downtown Area Advisory Committee (DAAC), visit the Our Town Planning website.

A few announcements which you can read more about below:
  • Our Small Business Saturday promotion continues with 20+ Basalt businesses participating with special offers on November 29, including KSNO which will draw among participating businesses to give away a $500 ad package! All the rest of you, don't worry. If you send in your offer by next Monday your business can still be listed in the next two newsletters.
  • Applications are already coming in for hosting 2015 Basalt Business After Hours. Take a look below and send in your application by December 15 (note the extended deadline, by popular request) to be considered.
Dinner with Special People

I just returned from dinner at Eurasia with a few special people. Outgoing board member Missy Hagen of Fleisher Land & Homes and current board member Zach Fischer of The Basalt Mountain Inn, and their respective spouses. Missy is barely a few weeks off the board and already we're talking about business education in Basalt, the excitement of the "Set Your Sails" high school-to-business program, and working together to develop our community-based memberships. Zach, swamped with guests at the Basalt Mountain Inn, has just returned from a weekend in Denver at the packed Ski & Snowboard Expo; he's already brainstorming ways to better serve our business members through the Business After Hours (sign up for 2015 below!), marketing programs, and collaborations. These people, the Chamber's volunteer board, are the ones working behind the scenes to support our valued members. Thanks Missy and Zach, as well as Marty and Megan for bearing with all our excited conversation, and Megan for volunteering to help out in the Caboose on your non-work days... see you soon!

Warm regards,
Robin

BAHINVITATION TO HOST A BUSINESS AFTER HOURS
Applications Now Being Accepted for 2015

If you've been to a Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours, you'll know what a great opportunity it is to see old friends, make new business contacts, eat excellent snacks and often drink some very nice beer or wine. Our members are getting increasingly bold with the microphone talking for 30 seconds or so about their latest business news. I predict that one day in 2015, someone is going to break into song!

The monthly gathering - every 3rd Thursday of the month - is a fun social event, with relaxed networking, libations and priceless giveaways. As Chamber director, I especially enjoy these occasions because I get to spend time with members and even do a little match-making. Nothing makes me happier than a good collaboration.

For business hosts this is an excellent opportunity to bring potential customers and referrers in your doors. We've had a great new bunch of hosts in 2014 and look forward to seeing the inside of some new stores in 2015.

Would you like to host a Business After Hours? If so, just fill out this application and email it to us by December 15. A selection committee will choose the locations and a schedule will be announced at 2014's final Business after hours on December 18 at Alpine Bank Willits.

Every year we have more businesses interested in hosting than months available, so make your application stand out. A few tips: Think of something fun and different. Pretty sure we're going to see Santa Claus in December. Consider partnering up with another business. If you're an interior decorator with a home office, how about getting together with an architectural firm. Fitness centers can team up with chiropractors. Door prizes are always popular, even music.

The FISHING REPORT
November weather is starting out here in Basalt on the mild side, and we'll take it!  We have yet to see any serious snow, and indian summer just keeps on rolling here in the Roaring Fork Valley. On the fishing side of the coin, beware of spawning brown trout throughout the Valley.  Please give pairs on beds a wide berth, as there are plenty of ravenous rainbows, cutthroat and brook trout out there very willing to eat the fly. Streamer fishing on the lower Roaring Fork and Colorado Rivers is as white-hot as it gets, the upper Fork has excellent action in the afternoon, and the Fryingpan still has very decent mid-day blue winged olive and midge hatches. Get out there and enjoy!
