Your gift to ACPE prepares dynamic leaders, like
Rabbi Shulamit Izen,
to offer spiritual care to those in life's vulnerable moments.
"
CPE is a process of knowing who we are and what we're acting out of,
and in doing that we can truly meet people in the pit of their experience."

Amy Greene Board Chair |
I'm writing ahead of my regularly scheduled monthly column to give an update on the meeting of the Strategic Partners, who met November 20-21, 2019 in Cleveland, OH with La Piana Consulting, to continue to explore ideas to strengthen and formalize our relationships. We have heard from our respective memberships that they need more information. With the assistance of our consultants, we will design a strategy to communicate and engage with the members throughout the ongoing conversations.
All of the association's leaders committed to encouraging member participation and feedback during the process. We will need to hear from you as we weigh the pros and cons of the multitude of membership models such as federations, associations, and trade groups. We believe it is essential to preserve the uniqueness and identity of each association. In the end, our respective memberships have the authority to ratify (or not) anything we propose before implementation. I am comforted by the guidance provided by the consultants, who have worked with numerous complicated groups and through many challenges. Some of their previous clients decided to consolidate and others have not. The consultants' objective advice will serve us well as we envision the future of the spiritual care and education movement.

Next week ACPE will celebrate Giving Tuesday with a goal of raising $7,500 to support innovation in spiritual care & the next generation of spiritual care educators and providers.
Giving Tuesday, taking place December 3rd, is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage giving and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Be a part of the giving movement next week!

Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far to our end-of-year service project!
This year we are collecting donations for El Refugio, a nonprofit that serves as a hospitality house, offering meals and lodging for families and friends visiting immigrants and asylum seekers detained at Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia. To make our end-of-year holiday service project a success, we ask that you donate items to benefit El Refugio by December 2. One week left to go!

One West Court Square in downtown Decatur has served ACPE well for the last five years, however, the staff will move the office during the first week of December. A changing real estate market (which meant a 25% increase in rent) and evolving workspace needs prompted the staff to evaluate office alternatives. After touring several options and considering various workspace models, the team decided to move to 55 Allen Plaza in downtown Atlanta.
Benefits of ACPE's downtown location are:
- Annual savings of no less than $80,000.
- Easier access to public transportation. Visitors arriving from the airport will no longer need to change trains.
- Onsite meeting space for leadership meetings and trainings.
- Several hotels for out-of-town guests within blocks of the building.
- Views and walking access to downtown parks (1 block from Centennial Park and the Center for Civil and Human Rights!), restaurants, and amenities for guests.
- Direct access to the downtown interstate exchange.
Beginning next month, you can find ACPE at 55 Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard, Suite 835, Atlanta, GA 30308. Phone numbers, emails, and web addresses will not be affected.

I read bell hooks
Teaching to Transgress twenty years ago when I was working on a PhD in cultural foundations of education. In the first paragraph of the first chapter, hooks writes the following: "To teach in a manner that respects and cares for the souls of our students is essential if we are to provide the necessary conditions where learning can most deeply and intimately begin" (p. 13). In the margin next to that quote, I wrote, "This is why I'm here!"
That sentence struck me like a lightening bolt, a moment that created the kind of shift within my mind and the grounding within my soul that has shaped my work as an educator ever since. Of course, it is aspirational - we all fall short of such a high-minded commitment on those days when the busy-ness of life distracts us from our deeper sense of purpose. But even twenty years later, I come back to this sentence time and again to make sure I still hear that "yes!" to this commitment to the respect and care of souls.

Joann Heaney-Hunter Interim Psychotherapy Commission Chair |
Greetings to all, and a Happy Thanksgiving to all our U.S. members. This article is somewhat longer than others I have written, but I have important updates to share with you as we come to the end of our first season as an ACPE Commission.
I am happy to report the results of my presentation to the ACPE board on Tuesday, November 5. Prior to the board meeting, I delivered a report that detailed our work since the annual conference in May 2019. I presented the final charge developed by the group, the decision to form separate subcommittees for oversight of both the Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy program (SIP) and Continuing Education, and the request that former AAPC members be added to the Professional Ethics Commission so that the psychotherapist perspective be represented.
At this meeting, ACPE board members approved two action items vital to the psychotherapy community: (1) the proposal to admit institutional members and (2) the proposal to implement the Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy Program (SIP).

Giving is complicated. Even giving thanks can be complicated. What does one intend? What does another hear? How will it be received? Are there expectations in the giving? Alberto Rios, former poet laureate of Arizona, offers this wonderful poem that embraces the paradoxes of giving. He writes the following about this piece: "This is a poem of thanks to those who live lives of service, which, I think, includes all of us-from the large measure to the smallest gesture, from care-giving to volunteerism to being an audience member or a reader. I've been able to offer these words to many groups, not only as a poem but also as a recognition. We give for so many reasons, and are bettered by it."

"When Giving is All We Have"
by Alberto Rios
One river gives
Its journey to the next.
We give because someone gave to us.
We give because nobody gave to us.
We give because giving has changed us.
We give because giving could have changed us.
We have been better for it,
We have been wounded by it-
Giving has many faces: It is loud and quiet,
Big, though small, diamond in wood-nails.
Its story is old, the plot worn and the pages too,
But we read this book, anyway, over and again:
Giving is, first and every time, hand to hand,
Mine to yours, yours to mine.
You gave me blue and I gave you yellow.
Together we are simple green. You gave me
What you did not have, and I gave you
What I had to give-together, we made
Something greater from the difference.
