Alaska Farm Legislative Update
March 2016
Attention Members and Friends,

The Senate Finance Committee is taking public testimony this week on SB 139, the operating budget.

T he Senate Natural Resources Budget Subcommittee is recommending they keep Mt. McKinley Meat & Sausage in the budget another year with intent similar to what the House included.  They Senate Subcommittee also recommended keeping the potato program and the other funding for the PMC.  They did put a "one time increment" funding stipulation on this with intent language instructing the division work with industry to get services more privatized.

Consider pointing out the potential the Alaska agriculture industry has for growth:
  • Alaskan's spend $2.5 billion annually and only 2-5% is grown here
  • Potatoes are one of the top 5 agricultural products in Alaska, netting over $3 million annually and produce roughly 10% of the potatoes consumed
  • 67% of farmers surveyed said they would expand with more market options
Also, thank the Senate subcommittee members for supporting agriculture programs.

Remember, the House Finance Committee still needs to add these into the operating budget, so stay engaged with them
