Steve Ivy Director of Community, Practice, Membership |
ACPE is now over two years into our new organizational structure yet less than one year with new members under the Psychotherapy Commission. Two years ago we knew change was all around us. What we did not know, and perhaps still do not know, is whether the change would be transformative. As our psychotherapist colleagues experience integration in ACPE, we are witnessing familiar processes that accompany change. The senses of dislocation and possibility, the emotions of grief and hope are never far away when organizations we love and have invested in are changing radically or even dying. What I am most curious about is how individuals, groups, and ACPE itself are clinging to the past (stasis), or adopting to new realities (change), but are experiencing deep transformation that writes a new future that none could have anticipated or perhaps even imagined.

Marc Medwed Associate Executive Director |
ACPE is a recognized accreditor of the U.S. Department of Education, to accredit programs of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and Certified Educator CPE. There are two primary types of accredited centers: 1) An Institution Sponsored or Free Standing Center that offers accreditation to a single entity and 2) A System Center Accreditation (with independent component sites) that offers multi-campus institutions a single accreditation, administered by the administrative System Center (host) and extends to each independent component site. Although component sites are connected by a central accreditation, each site must meet the defined criteria as if it were an independently accredited center. The System Center Accreditation is designed to be a cost-effective means for a multi-campus institution to offer CPE programs at multiple sites.

During the downtime, September 6-13, 2019, members will not be able to access certified educator portfolios, educator candidate portfolios, or accredited center portfolios.
Other portions of ACPE's SharePoint, such as Yammer and email, will still be available. Thank you for your patience while we upgrade our systems.

One important ACPE member benefit is access to Communities of Practice. Former AAPC members are familiar with a regional structure, where geographic groups gathered periodically for information sharing, community building, and learning. Some regions sponsored events several times throughout the year; some regions had one conference. What bound groups together was common geography.
At the ACPE Conference in May, I discovered that until recently, ACPE members had a similar regional structure. Like AAPC members, ACPE members gathered locally to share community and learning. Now, all members are working to develop and participate in diverse Communities of Practice.

As summer winds down, many of us are gearing up for new residents and our fall units. It has been great to see so many colleagues participating our Q & A sessions about the new accreditation process. If you have not yet participated or wish to sign up for another session, please click here. One of the most frequently asked questions that we have received is, "How do I organize my portfolio?" The answer is that there are many ways to do this and there is not one 'right way' that the Accreditation Commission wants to see. The organizational structure that you choose should be one that allows you, as the educator, to best tell your center's story. To help you get started...

Many of you are deep into teaching a summer unit of CPE and are thinking about how to assist your students to bring this rich learning experience to a close. Budgeting and payments to ACPE for the opportunity to conduct those units may be the farthest thing from your mind. However, I have good news that was first shared at this past May's annual ACPE Conference in Scottsdale, AZ. Coming under the heading of "we heard you," in calendar year 2020 we will begin billing centers quarterly for the number of units actually conducted.

I hope that everyone's summer is off to a great start! As we are continuing our preparation for the new process, we are excited to publish the sign-up information for small group Q & A sessions that will being on June 11 and will continue throughout the rest of the year as long as needed. These sessions are the opportunity to ask everything you always wanted to know about the new process and building your center's accreditation portfolio.

When I was a child, my mother would occasionally point to the sun streaming through the clouds and warn my brother and me that we best behave because God was watching. Not the best theology, but effective behavior management. On a more serious side, the images of Hurricane Dorian have been both stunning and terrifying. Nature is both marvelous and so much larger than us. In that spirit, we offer "Flying Lesson: Clouds":

Flying Lesson: Clouds
by
Dolores Hayden
Focus on the shapes:
cirrus, a curl,
stratus, a layer,
cumulus, a heap.
Humilis, a small cloud, cumulus humilis, a fine day to fly.
Incus, the anvil, stay grounded. Nimbus, rain, be careful,
don't take off near nimbostratus, a shapeless layer
of rain, hail, ice, or snow. Ice weighs on the blades
of your propeller, weighs on the entering edge
of your wings. Read a cloud, decode it, a dense, chilly mass
can shift, flood with light. Watch for clouds closing under you:
the sky opens in a breath, shuts in a heartbeat.

Monday, September 9
*'Āshurā' - Islam
Sunni Muslims celebrate this day as the anniversary of Noah's departure from the Ark on Mount Ararat and the freedom of the children of Israel from Egyptian bondage. Shi'a Muslims mark this date as the anniversary of the martyrdom of Husayn, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, in 680 C.E.
Thursday, September 12 *Ghambar Paitishahem - Zoroastrianism [through Monday, September 16] This festival celebrates the creation of the earth and the summer harvest.
*Anant Chaturdashi - Jainism and Hinduism For Hindus this day celebrates Anant, one form of Lord Vishnu. If a devout Hindu vows to honor Vishnu and keeps that vow for 14 years, it is believed that she or he will see wealth. This is also the last day of Ganesh Utsav, a 10-day Hindu celebration. Statues of Lord Ganesha are carried to bodies of water to be submerged, accompanied by devotional songs and dancing. Jains celebrate this day with special worship services and processions to the community's main temple.
*Ethiopian New Year - Rastafari A sacred day for Rastafarians because they consider Ethiopia to be their spiritual homeland, to which they aspire to return.
Saturday, September 14 *Elevation or Exultation of the Holy Cross - Christianity This day recognizes the Cross as a symbol of Christ's love for humankind and God's victory over death. It also marks the finding of the Holy Cross by St. Helen after it had been stolen in the 7th century C.E. Orthodox churches begin their commemoration at sundown on the preceding day. In the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition, this day is known as Meskel and is marked on September 27th.
*Pitr-paksha or Mahalay Paksha - Hinduism The beginning of a two-week period during which Hindu adherents perform shraddha rites to gratify the spirits of their deceased ancestors, including giving food or other donations as a form of charitable service.
Sunday, September 15 *Ksamavani - Jainism A day of universal forgiveness, in which Jains ask forgiveness of others for wrongs committed during the previous year, and they also forgive those who have caused them suffering.
