As I have spoken with many of you over the past few weeks, I am aware of the remarkable creativity and compassion you are calling forth during this time of so much change. You are experimenting with offering spiritual care by video and telephone; and you are learning how to supervise via video conference. You are tending to the existential anxiety of those in your charge, as well as your own. You are navigating the vast grey area between essential and non-essential. You have created alternative staffing models. You have born the heavy weight of ethical decision making, enacting heart wrenching resource allocation scenarios. Many of you are doing this with children underfoot, spouses at work in the next room, or behind a face mask.

#GivingTuesdayNow is a global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5, 2020 as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.
ACPE is joining the movement! We have two goals: 1) is to raise $5,000 on that day and 2) is to get 20 people to begin a monthly gift of $20. All money raised on #GivingTuesdayNow will support projects that help ACPE educators and centers adapt their programs to meet the critical needs of this unprecedented time.

ACPE is actively monitoring the COVID-19 (commonly known as the coronavirus) situation. The health and safety - of our students, members, and the community we serve - are our paramount priority. We are committed to providing updates and information as the COVID-19 situation continues via email and the website. We encourage you to monitor the CDC website for additional information. If you have any questions or need further information, please contact the office at (404) 320-1472 or acpe@acpe.edu.

In the midst of these uncertain times, many of us are hungry for information - information that can inform our decisions, help us process what we're experiencing, and connect us with those around us.
The Professional Well-Being Committee is working to gather such resources and make them available to our members. Here you will find articles, videos, and reflections that will bolster our resilience and strengthen our practice in the days and weeks ahead.
If you or your Community of Practice has a resource that you would like to submit to share with our members,
please email

The realities of COVID-19 have altered but not derailed ACPE's first Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy Trainer training. That training will still happen as scheduled, May 29-30, but online rather than in person.
We would much prefer to hold this training face-to-face, but all 32 applicants have cleared those dates on their calendar, and we believe it wise to avoid the rescheduling crunch (weddings, funerals, reunions, conferences, etc.)
likely to happen whenever life returns to normal (whatever that will mean). Beth Toler and Russell Siler Jones will be leading the training. They both have experience teaching online and are confident they can resource the group using this format.

Mindfulness meditation has been shown to give patients control over their own depression and anxiety levels and can cut the recurrence of depression. Recent discoveries in neuroscience both confirm many practitioners' experiences, and give direction to developing therapeutic interventions. This webinar will be facilitated by

There are some beautiful and amazing poems emerging from the creativity of writers during this pandemic season. Sometimes, however, a familiar voice with a gentle reminder may be more of what we need. From her collection Thirst, Mary Oliver:
Praying
It doesn't have to be the blue iris, it could be weeds in a vacant lot, or a few small stones; just pay attention, then patch
a few words together and don't try to make them elaborate, this isn't a contest but the doorway
into thanks, and a silence in which another voice may speak.

Sometimes, the work of being human can simply be too much. In those moments, some of us wander outdoors or dive into a book. Here is another option, one that is wonderfully distracting, marvelously mundane, and simply delightful. From the National Zoo in Washington DC:

April 13 Vaisakhi (Sikh) The festival which celebrates the founding of the Sikh community as the Khalsa (community of the initiated). On this day, Sikhs gather and celebrate Vaisakhi at their local Gurdwaras (Sikh house of worship) by remembering this day as the birth of the Khalsa.
Easter Monday (Christianity) The Monday immediately after Easter Sunday. It is observed primarily by the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions. It marks the beginning of Easter Week (Roman Catholic) or Bright Week (Eastern Orthodox).
Vaisakhi/Baisakhi (Hinduism) In Hinduism, Vaisakhi celebrates the Solar new year. Vaisakhi marks the first day of the month. It is also a spring harvest festival.
Solar New Year Mesha Sankranta (Hinduism) On this day, worshipping Lord Shiva, Hanuman, Vishnu and Maa Kali are considered auspicious. Devotees take sacred bath in holy water bodies of Ganga, Jamuna, and Godavari. On this day, some communities believe in preparing a special drink, which is called Pana to be consumed by everyone.
April 14 Theravada New Year (Buddhism) Buddhist celebrations are generally dependent on the country of origin or ethnic background. In some South East Asian countries, people celebrate the Theravada New Year by buying birds and fish. They then release these animals into the wild to show their compassion for living things as well as to build good karma.
April 15 Birthday of Guru Nanak the 1st Guru (Sikhism) This day celebrates the birth of the first Sikh guru, Guru Nanak. This is one of the most sacred festivals in Sikhism. The festivities in the Sikh religion revolve around the anniversaries of the 10 Sikh Gurus. These Gurus were responsible for shaping the beliefs of the Sikhs. Their birthdays, known as Gurpurab, are occasions for celebration and prayer among the Sikhs.
April 17 Holy Friday (Orthodox Christianity) Holy Friday commemorates Jesus' crucifixion. In the Orthodox tradition, special services are held that revisit removing the Body of Christ from the Cross and entombing him. Occasionally, pilgrimages are made to Jerusalem, and processions are held that follow the route that Jesus took to his crucifixion.
April 18 Black Saturday / Holy Saturday (Orthodox Christianity) Holy Saturday, the final day of Holy Week and the last day of Lent, commemorates the day that Jesus's body lay entombed in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, before his resurrection on Easter Sunday. In the Western Church, this is a time to quietly reflect on Christ's death and burial, and no Masses are held.
April 19 Pascha (Easter) (Orthodox Christianity) This date celebrates Jesus' resurrection, and the end of a 40 day fast (Easter is celebrated on a different date in Western Christian churches). Many Orthodox Christians celebrate by laying Easter Eggs and Easter Bread on relatives' graves, and blessing food baskets filled with cheese, meat, eggs, butter and more--many foods that cannot be consumed during the Lenten fast. Eggs, symbolizing new life, are often dyed red to represent the blood of Christ.
April 20 Easter Monday (Orthodox Christianity) Easter Monday is a day to finish leftover Easter meals that were not eaten the day before. The menu may include: lamb, spanokopita (spinach pie), dolmadakia (stuffed vine leaves), and loukoumathes (honey balls). Easter Monday is also referred to as "Bright Monday" or "New Monday" in many Orthodox churches.
April 20-May 1 Festival of Ridvan (Bahá'Ã) Annual festival commemorating the 12 days when Bahá'u'lláh, the prophet-founder of the Bahá'à Faith, resided in a garden called Ridván (Paradise) and publicly proclaimed his mission as God's messenger for this age. The first (April 20), ninth (April 28), and twelfth (May 1) days are celebrated as holy days when Baha'is suspend work.
