The COVID-19 pandemic caused our team to innovate spiritual care and remote CPE on the fly. In March, our transition began, and the process continues as we move forward conducting multiple virtual summer CPE units, while completing a residency and three extended units. For the safety of students and staff, Amy Greene, the Director of the Center for Spiritual Care decided that all spiritual care at Cleveland Clinic Hospitals would be offered remotely.
Fortunately, we already utilized Zoom in our CoP and CEC training groups. Our challenge involved helping students access Zoom remotely and utilize features that enhanced learning. We discovered that our center needed to purchase additional Zoom accounts to accommodate our needs. As we approach our onboarding of summer students, we changed the acceptance process to include a survey where students confirm access and familiarity with technology as way to affirm readiness to engage in remote learning.

I hope that you are all staying healthy and well during this unprecedented time. The Certification Commission continues to meet on a monthly basis and to support our CECs and the ACPE Certified Educators who are working diligently to maintain their progress in the certification process.
Based on feedback that Commissioners are receiving, we are happy to share that we will be holding a series of Q & A sessions related to the certification processes. These small group sessions will be facilitated by members of the Commission and the ACPE Office and will be an open forum for you to bring your questions.

ACPE Website Notice for May 11 - 12
|
On May 11 and 12, 2020, ACPE will perform maintenance on its cloud servers. During this time, educators and students will not be able to access the Student Unit Database. Educators will not be able to register unit credit and students will not be able to enroll in units. Access to event registrations and invoices will also be down.
While we do not anticipate other disruptions to the website during this time, please prepare for sporadic outages. Thank you for your understanding and patience while we perform required maintenance to keep our servers updated and safe.

Because of the current COVID-19 situation, we have extended the due date for individual ACPE memberships to April 30, 2020. If you have experienced an unexpected delay in payment, please let us know the status of your payment or if you are experiencing a hardship.

One of the silver linings of this "shelter in place" order has been the number of people out walking their dogs. It's too bad we can't see into the dogs minds to get a sense of what they are thinking about all of this. Billy Collins offers this whimsical reflection on his pup:
Walking My Seventy-Five-Year-Old Dog

She's painfully slow,
so I often have to stop and wait
while she sniffs some roadside weeds
as if she were reading the biography of a famous dog.
And she's not a pretty sight any more,
dragging one of her hind legs,
her coat too matted to brush or comb,
and a snout white as a marshmallow.
We usually walk down a disused road
that runs along the edge of a lake,
whose surface trembles in a high wind
and is slow to ice over as the months grow cold.
We don't walk very far before
she sits down on her worn haunches
and looks up at me with her rheumy eyes.
Then it's time to carry her back to the car.
Just thinking about the honesty in her eyes,
I realize I should tell you
she's not really seventy five. She's fourteen.
I guess I was trying to appeal to your sense
of the bizarre, the curiosities of the sideshow.
I mean who really cares about another person's dog?
Everything else I've said is true,
except the part about her being fourteen.
I mean she's old, but not that old,
and it's not nice to divulge the true age of a lady.

We are hearing that folks have been inundated by resources, and yet we continue to work to make sure folks in the field are not only caring for their patients, families, and staff but also themselves. Ninth day of Rivdan (Baha'i)
As noted above for the first day of Ridvan, this day, the ninth of the days Baha'u'llah spent in the Ridvan garden, marks the day his family arrived.

Yom Ha'Atzmaut (Judaism)
Yom Ha'Atzmaut is the national independence day of Israel, commencing in 1948. Many celebrate the holiday with picnics, singing and dancing, and Hallel, a Jewish prayer of praise and thanksgiving, is often recited.

Ghambar Maidyozarem (Zoroastrianism)
This is the first of six annual Ghambar festivals celebrated by Zoroastrians. The word Ghambar is derived from "gahanbar" meaning time-storage in Persian and alludes to the division and storage of food. As the name indicates, these five-day festivals are observations of the different seasons and harvests. They are celebrated through joyous feasts and the recognition of the seven acts of goodness: generosity of the spirit, sharing, selfless help toward those in need, community participation and inclusion, honesty, pity, and remembrance of one's ancestors. Ghambar Maidyozarem celebrates the sky and the winter crop harvest.
Sakyamuni Buddha's Birthday (Buddhism)
Buddha's birthday is a Buddhist festival and holiday celebrated in most of East Asia commemorating the birth of the Prince Siddhartha Gautama, later the Gautama Buddha and founder of Buddhism.

12th Day of Ridvan (Baha'i)
Beginning on April 21 and concluding on May 2, Baha'is celebrate the period when the religion's founder, Baha'u'llah, resided in a garden in Baghdad. Baha'u'llah called it the Garden of Ridvan, as Ridvan translates to paradise. It was during his time in the garden that Baha'iuÃllah proclaimed that he was the messenger of God for this age.

Albert L. Galloway, 85, died on April 19 (his mother's birthday), 2020. Al was born December 15, 1934, in Baltimore, Md., to Edith and Albert, Sr. Al received his call to ministry while at the Chautauqua Institution in New York. He graduated from City College High School (Baltimore), Tennessee Wesleyan University (Athens, TN), and received his Master of Divinity from Drew Theological Seminary (Madison, N.J.) in 1960. After serving for 3 years at Marvin Memorial United Methodist Church in Silver Spring, MD., he entered the hospital chaplaincy at Indiana University Hospital in 1965, later becoming the director of the chaplaincy program which included University, Riley, and Long hospitals. In 1968, he was listed as a founding member of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) and served as its Certification Chair.
