Trace Haythorn Executive Director |
Last week, I had the opportunity to gather with twenty people who serve in a variety of contexts related to chaplaincy and spiritual care at the
Fetzer Institute. Some of you may recognize Fetzer as a supporter of programs like "On Being" with Krista Tippett. We were invited as a part of a partnership with the
Chaplaincy Innovation Lab to imagine how these different sectors can work together, how people serving in the military, prisons, healthcare, higher education, movements, business/industrial, and a variety of other contexts might help advance the profession and the standards that guide its practice.

El Refugio visits ACPE |
Thank you to everyone that sent in sweatshirts, socks and belts to benefit the work of El Refugio!
El Refugio is
a nonprofit that serves as a hospitality house, offering meals and lodging for families and friends visiting immigrants and asylum seekers detained at Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia. On Giving Tuesday, ACPE hosted Marilyn McGinnis and Patti Ghezzi, two representatives from El Refugio, to share stories about their work and to receive the donations from our members.

Pam Lazor Accreditation Chair |
I want to start by saying a huge "thank you" to the members of the
Accreditation Commission and also to Marc Medwed and Kimberly Yates in the ACPE office. Throughout 2019 the commission met every week via Zoom to learn, develop and plan for the new accreditation process that will launch on January 1, 2020. Commissioners have also made themselves available to facilitate
Q&A sessions for ACPE educators about the new process, while at the same time continuing to carry out all the usual accreditation business of ACPE. Marc and Kimberly have provided support and guidance every step of the way. It has been a very busy and productive year!

I'm writing ahead of my regularly scheduled monthly column to give an update on the meeting of the Strategic Partners, who met November 20-21, 2019 in Cleveland, OH with La Piana Consulting, to continue to explore ideas to strengthen and formalize our relationships. We have heard from our respective memberships that they need more information. With the assistance of our consultants, we will design a strategy to communicate and engage with the members throughout the ongoing conversations.

ACPE has a long tradition of sending educators to conduct a summer unit of CPE in Hong Kong. In recent years, ACPE has cooperated with Alice Miu Youda Nethersole Medical Center in the Tai Po section of Hong Kong. A number of ACPE members have participated in this program.
The hospital and CPE committee want to reestablish the program next summer. The hospital provides travel, housing, some meals and a stipend. The housing is adjacent to the hospital in the same apartment building where the administrator and several physicians live. The CPE education center has first class space and equipment. Hong Kong has a fine public transportation system that makes being there easy to navigate.
Persons interested in considering this opportunity may contact either
John Moody or
Rodney Seeger, who will gladly share their experiences and answer any questions.

staff members over the next several days.
Our new address is
55 Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard, Suite 835, Atlanta, GA 30308. Phone numbers, emails, and web addresses will remain the same.
Thank you!

Listening to the news can lead one to think the world we spend our lives building is being toppled, bulldozed, mowed over. But the foundations we lay are often stronger than the forces of the moment. This poem captures such an image of hope, speaking into this season with a gentle reminder to trust those foundations: |
Loving in Truth
Chris Wallace-Crabbe
Someone will push the house over one day,
Some spacedozer give it a shove,
But the cobbles we laid down here in the yard,
These are a labour of love.
All winter we set these cobbles in place,
Or was it the summer as well?
Sorting through lumpy bluestone pitchers
For ones that looked suitable.
The old house decayed - along with us -
Will a strange new resident
Admire the patio made in joy
Wondering what we meant?
Things fall apart, the poet wrote,
Certainties crumble and move
But the cobbles oddly plotted together,
These are our labour of love.
Chris Wallace-Crabbe, "Loving in Truth" text from
Telling a Hawk from a Handsaw,
Carcanet Oxford Poets, 2008

This episode of "Hidden Brain" speaks to the kind of empathy we often seek to cultivate in CPE. (It might even make for a good didactic session!)

|
ACPE is the premier, Department of Education-recognized organization that provides the highest quality CPE programs for spiritual care professionals of any faith and in any setting. We do this through a rigorous accreditation and certification process for centers and educators that provide CPE. The depth of our training enables students to realize their full potential to strengthen the spiritual health of people in their care as well as themselves.
ACPE is also the professional home of a growing number of spiritually integrated psychotherapists and pastoral counselors. ACPE supports Psychotherapist and Practitioner members through continuing education programs, networking, and leadership development.
