A good theory is key to achieving the goals of ACPE and the outcomes of CPE.

The goal of the training is to offer individuals an opportunity at the SCT® training level of "Exploring SCT®" for their own development, to learn the SCT® theoretical approach well enough to compare it to their own, and to use elements of theory and technique in their current CPE practice.

In Case You Missed It
Pam Lazor Accreditation Chair
I want to start by saying a huge "thank you" to the members of the Accreditation Commission and also to Marc Medwed and Kimberly Yates in the ACPE office. Throughout 2019 the commission met every week via Zoom to learn, develop and plan for the new accreditation process that will launch on January 1, 2020. Commissioners have also made themselves available to facilitate Q&A sessions for ACPE educators about the new process, while at the same time continuing to carry out all the usual accreditation business of ACPE. Marc and Kimberly have provided support and guidance every step of the way. It has been a very busy and productive year!

Summer CPE in Hong Kong
Hong Kong
ACPE has a long tradition of sending educators to conduct a summer unit of CPE in Hong Kong. In recent years, ACPE has cooperated with Alice Miu Youda Nethersole Medical Center in the Tai Po section of Hong Kong. A number of ACPE members have participated in this program.

The hospital and CPE committee want to reestablish the program next summer. The hospital provides travel, housing, some meals and a stipend. The housing is adjacent to the hospital in the same apartment building where the administrator and several physicians live. The CPE education center has first class space and equipment. Hong Kong has a fine public transportation system that makes being there easy to navigate.

Persons interested in considering this opportunity may contact either John Moody or Rodney Seeger, who will gladly share their experiences and answer any questions.
ACPE's new address is:

55 Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard,  Suite 835
Atlanta, Georgia 30308

Phone numbers, emails, and web addresses will remain the same.
New Accreditation Process: Sign-up for Q&A Sessions

Join us for New Accreditation Process Q&A Sessions. The sessions are your opportunity to ask anything about the new process or building your center's accreditation portfolio.

Dates are currently posted through the new year. The sessions are 12:00pm to 1:00pm eastern time on the assigned days. The number of participants for each session is limited to ensure individual questions are addressed.

Weekly Highlights
This Week's Reflection
Winter solstice. Hanukkah. Christmas. Kwanzaa. May whatever you celebrate this season bring you and yours abundant joy and deep peace. Here's a poem that points to the complexities of this time of year even as it embraces the celebrations:
"Toward the Winter Solstice"
by Timothy Steele

Although the roof is just a story high,
It dizzies me a little to look down.
I lariat-twirl the cord of Christmas lights
And cast it to the weeping birch's crown;
A dowel into which I've screwed a hook
Enables me to reach, lift, drape, and twine
The cord among the boughs so that the bulbs
Will accent the tree's elegant design.

Friends, passing home from work or shopping, pause
And call up commendations or critiques.
I make adjustments. Though a potpourri
Of Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Jews, and Sikhs,
We all are conscious of the time of year;
We all enjoy its colorful displays
And keep some festival that mitigates
The dwindling warmth and compass of the days.

Some say that L.A. doesn't suit the Yule,
But UPS vans now like magi make
Their present-laden rounds, while fallen leaves
Are gaily resurrected in their wake;
The desert lifts a full moon from the east
And issues a dry Santa Ana breeze,
And valets at chic restaurants will soon
Be tending flocks of cars and SUVs.

And as the neighborhoods sink into dusk
The fan palms scattered all across town stand
More calmly prominent, and this place seems
A vast oasis in the Holy Land.
This house might be a caravansary,
The tree a kind of cordial fountainhead
Of welcome, looped and decked with necklaces
And ceintures of green, yellow, blue, and red.

Some wonder if the star of Bethlehem
Occurred when Jupiter and Saturn crossed;
It's comforting to look up from this roof
And feel that, while all changes, nothing's lost,
To recollect that in antiquity
The winter solstice fell in Capricorn
And that, in the Orion Nebula,
From swirling gas, new stars are being born.

Kwanzaa begins (through January 1) - African American heritage
A seven-day festival that celebrates values highly regarded by people of African American ancestry.  The values include umoja (unity), kujichagulia (self-determination), ujima (collective work and responsibility), ujamaa (cooperative economics), nia (purpose), kuumba (creativity), and imani (faith).  Each of these principles, collectively known as the Nguzo Saba, is represented by a red or green candle, each of which is lit on successive days using a central black candle.

Synaxis (Sobor) of the Theotokos - Christianity (Eastern churches)

According to Eastern Orthodox Christians, this feast day is perhaps the most ancient celebration of Mary in the Christian tradition.  It commemorates Mary as the human being through whom Jesus' incarnation as the human Son of God was made possible.  The terms "synaxis" and "sobor" refer to a liturgical gathering and often indicate special occasions for divine worship.

Zaratosht Diso [Anniversary of the death of the prophet Zarathustra (Zoroaster)] - Zoroastrianism

Estimates of when he lived vary from the sixth to the second millenium B.C.E., but this date memorializes the death of the prophet Zoroaster, whose hymns (gathas) are preserved in the Zoroastrian scriptures.
