A good theory is key to achieving the goals of ACPE and the outcomes of CPE.

The goal of the training is to offer individuals an opportunity at the SCT® training level of "Exploring SCT®" for their own development, to learn the SCT® theoretical approach well enough to compare it to their own, and to use elements of theory and technique in their current CPE practice.

Pam Lazor Accreditation Chair
I want to start by saying a huge "thank you" to the members of the Accreditation Commission and also to Marc Medwed and Kimberly Yates in the ACPE office. Throughout 2019 the commission met every week via Zoom to learn, develop and plan for the new accreditation process that will launch on January 1, 2020. Commissioners have also made themselves available to facilitate Q&A sessions for ACPE educators about the new process, while at the same time continuing to carry out all the usual accreditation business of ACPE. Marc and Kimberly have provided support and guidance every step of the way. It has been a very busy and productive year!

Summer CPE in Hong Kong
Hong Kong
ACPE has a long tradition of sending educators to conduct a summer unit of CPE in Hong Kong. In recent years, ACPE has cooperated with Alice Miu Youda Nethersole Medical Center in the Tai Po section of Hong Kong. A number of ACPE members have participated in this program.

The hospital and CPE committee want to reestablish the program next summer. The hospital provides travel, housing, some meals and a stipend. The housing is adjacent to the hospital in the same apartment building where the administrator and several physicians live. The CPE education center has first class space and equipment. Hong Kong has a fine public transportation system that makes being there easy to navigate.

Persons interested in considering this opportunity may contact either John Moody or Rodney Seeger, who will gladly share their experiences and answer any questions.
ACPE's new address is:

55 Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard,  Suite 835
Atlanta, Georgia 30308

Phone numbers, emails, and web addresses will remain the same.
New Accreditation Process: Sign-up for Q&A Sessions

Join us for New Accreditation Process Q&A Sessions. The sessions are your opportunity to ask anything about the new process or building your center's accreditation portfolio.

Dates are currently posted through the new year. The sessions are 12:00pm to 1:00pm eastern time on the assigned days. The number of participants for each session is limited to ensure individual questions are addressed.

Weekly Highlights
This Week's Reflection
The end and beginning of a year are full of reflecting, resolving, and praying. As you make your way, whether through a personal inventory or a professional work plan, may the New Year bring you abundant joy, renewed hope, and a deep sense of connection to your colleagues throughout ACPE.
"A New Year's Poem"
By Margaret Avison

The Christmas twigs crispen and needles rattle
Along the window-ledge.
A solitary pearl
Shed from the necklace spilled at last week's party
Lies in the suety, snow-luminous plainness
Of morning, on the window-ledge beside them.
And all the furniture that circled stately
And hospitable when these rooms were brimmed
With perfumes, furs, and black-and-silver
Crisscross of seasonal conversation, lapses
Into its previous largeness.
I remember
Anne's rose-sweet gravity, and the stiff grave
Where cold so little can contain;
I mark the queer delightful skull and crossbones
Starlings and sparrows left, taking the crust,
And the long loop of winter wind
Smoothing its arc from dark Arcturus down
To the bricked corner of the drifted courtyard,
And the still window-ledge.
Gentle and just pleasure
It is, being human, to have won from space
This unchill, habitable interior
Which mirrors quietly the light
Of the snow, and the new year.

As you prepare for New Year's Eve, here's a list of celebrations from around the world, so if you can only catch a glimpse of the celebration at a certain time, this gives you about a 20 hour window!

Tuesday, December 31  New Year's Eve
- Ghambar Maidyarem (through January 4) - Zoroastrianism
A celebration for the creation of animals, and a time for the equitable sharing of food with others.

 - Sharaf - Bahá'í
The beginning of the sixteenth month of the Bahá'í year; its name means "honor."

Wednesday, January 1
- Feast of St. Basil (Orthodox Christianity)
This day celebrates St. Basil, one of the great fathers of the Orthodox Church. An influential Christian theologian and monastic, Basil was also known for his attention to the underprivileged and poor, and his writings on asceticism.

- Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus (Orthodox Christianity)
This Feast commemorates the naming and circumcision of the baby Jesus, eight days after he was born.

- Gantan-sai (Shinto)
Gantan-sai is the Shinto celebration of the new year (oshogatsu). This day is one of the most popular for shrine visits, as many pray for inner renewal, health and prosperity.

- Mary, Mother of God (Catholic Christianity)
This liturgical feast celebrates the Virgin Mary and her motherhood of Jesus. Some countries recognize this day with church services.

Sunday, January 5
- Guru Gobind Singh Ji's Birthday (Sikhism)
Gobind Singh (1666-1708) was the tenth Sikh Guru, and the last of the human-form Gurus. On his birthday, Sikhs celebrate Gobind Singh as a saint and a soldier: he worked toward reforming his religion and persevered in the face of persecution.

- Twelfth Night (Christianity)
The Twelfth Night marks the conclusion of the twelve days of Christmas and the eve of Epiphany. According to tradition, three kings arrived in Bethlehem twelve days after Jesus' birth to bestow gifts. This night is celebrated much like Christmas Eve, with merrymaking, eating traditional foods like King Cake, and parties.

Monday, January 6
- Christmas (Armenian Orthodox Christianity)
Armenian Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus on Epiphany, except for Armenians living in Israel, who celebrate Christmas on January 19th. This day marks the Armenian Orthodox celebration of Christ's birth and baptism.

- Epiphany (Christianity)
Known as Theophany in Eastern Christianity, it celebrates the manifestation of Jesus as Christ. In addition, the Western Church associates Epiphany with the journey of the Magi to the infant Jesus, and the Eastern Church with the baptism of Jesus by John.

- Dia de los Reyes / Three Kings Day (Latin American Christianity)
In Latin American countries, this day is referred to as Día de los Reyes, Three Kings Day, and children receive gifts from los reyes magos: the three wise men. Children and adults leave their shoes out for the Kings' presents before they go to bed the night before and leave treats to refresh the traveling Magi.
