Katherine Higgins Director of Communities of Practice
One month into my new role as Director of Communities of Practice, I continue to be inspired by the creativity and commitment of our CoPs. Relationships are at the core of our work and tending to the collegial relationships we share with one another is lifegiving. We are only just beginning to understand the power of CoPs to shape these relationships and provide both practical and theoretical underpinnings for our life together. I want to tell you about two things in the world of CoPs that have been on my mind this week.

The past two weeks, we've introduced you to ACPE's new Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy Program. The SIP Program is envisioned as a multi-disciplinary, inter-spiritual, multi-racial community of persons gathered for education, connection, and formation in the work of spiritually integrated psychotherapy. It aims to teach spiritually integrated psychotherapy to mental health providers across a variety of disciplines and licenses and to rebuild a national network for training and formation.

A good theory is key to achieving the goals of ACPE and the outcomes of CPE.

The goal of the training is to offer individuals an opportunity at the SCT® training level of "Exploring SCT®" for their own development, to learn the SCT® theoretical approach well enough to compare it to their own, and to use elements of theory and technique in their current CPE practice.

Dr. David Hogue
Insights from brain studies in recent decades have captured the public's imagination and touched on virtually every dimension of human experience, from love and friendships, to trauma and addictions, to our confidence in free will, to our experiences of the transcendent and our trust in reason. Increasingly the neurosciences are confirming and challenging many of our most cherished notions of what it means to be human. In this workshop, taking place on February 28, 2020, 9am-3pm, we will explore themes in recent brain research, including empathy, memory and trauma, story, ritual, and religious experiences.

ACPE: The Standard for Spiritual Care and Education is an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7004. ACPE is solely responsible for sponsored programs, including the awarding of NBCC credit.

An editor should be familiar with the disciplines of pastoral theology, practical theology and clinical supervision in ministry, a member in ACPE or ATFE, and possess proven literary skills. A small stipend is available. If interested or if you wish to nominate someone, please contact Leslie Veen. A full description of the editor's tasks is available upon request.
Are you interested in spending a Southern Hemisphere summer (November - February) supervising in the world's most remote CPE Centre?  Royal Perth Hospital has established an annual "International Pastoral Education Fellow" position in one of Australia's oldest and most innovative CPE programs.  Michael Hertz (ACPE Certified Educator and ACPEWA  Educator) is the Centre Director.  Ted Hodge (ACPE Certified Educator) was our inaugural International Fellow (2019-20).
The hospital provides round-trip travel for two, a two-bedroom apartment with stunning views across the Swan River to the city skyline, part-time access to a car and a remote "Bush CPE" experience.  CPE is part of RPH's nationally-acclaimed "Centre for Wellbeing and Sustainable Practice", which provides CPE-like experiences for hospital staff, including nurses, administrators and medical staff.  Perth is a beautiful and culturally diverse city with unending white sand beaches, easy access to ancient forests, rugged coasts of the Southern ocean, historic Aboriginal sites, art, music, great food and more.

This Week's Reflection
Have you ever been out for a walk and watched a flock of birds suddenly descend on a tree, only to leave it just as suddenly, often filling the air with their raucous bird noises? While you wouldn't want to be parked under that tree or walking beneath it (things can get messy....), there is something about that moment. June Cadwallader Staub may have discovered what makes such a moment so striking:
by Julie Cadwallader Staub

There comes a time in every fall
before the leaves begin to turn
when blackbirds group and flock and gather
choosing a tree, a branch, together
to click and call and chorus and clamor
announcing the season has come for travel.
Then comes a time when all those birds
without a sound or backward glance
pour from every branch and limb
into the air, as if on a whim
but it's a dynamic, choreographed mass
a swoop, a swerve, a mystery, a dance
and now the tree stands breathless, amazed
at how it was chosen, how it was changed.

In the continuing celebration of Black History Month, this amazing reading by multiple voices of Maya Angelou's "Caged Bird" was pulled together by the folks at CBS news on the occasion of Angelou's death. It is worth the 1:26 of your day:

February 10
Tu B'Shvat (Jewish)
New Year's Day for Trees, and traditionally the first of the year for tithing fruit of trees. Now a day for environmental awareness and action, such as tree planting. This day is known as the new year for trees, as it is the day that the age of trees is calculated for tithing. In tradition, fruit from trees may not be consumed in the first 4 years of life - as the first three years are forbidden, and the fourth year the fruit is for God. One tradition on this day is to eat from the seven species abundant in Israel: wheat, barley, grapes, pomegranates, olives, figs, and dates.

February 11
Our Lady of Lourdes (Christianity)
This marks the day in 1858 when St. Bernadette had her first vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the city of Lourdes in southern France. She had 18 apparitions in all, one of which told her to dig for a spring. The water of this spring is said to have great healing powers, and Christians make pilgrimages to visit this spring and the church that was built on the property.

February 14
St. Valentine's Day (Christianity)
Pope Gelasius assigned February 14th as Saint Valentine's Day in 496 CE. This day commemorates the death of Saint Valentine of Rome, who, according to tradition, was martyred on February 14th ca. 270 C.E. Saint Valentine's Day was not associated with romantic love until the High Middle Ages, when legends and stories about Valentine were written and popularized by Geoffrey Chaucer and his circle.

February 15
Nirvana Day (Buddhism)
Celebrates the day when the historical Buddha achieved Parinirvana, or complete Nirvana, upon the death of his physical body. Sometimes celebrated on February 8. This day marks the Buddha's death and when he reached Nirvana at the age of 80. Nirvana is the end to all wanting, and thus the end to all suffering that craving brings about. Buddhists who observe Nirvana day often do so by examining their lives, in order to make changes needed to help them achieve perfect peace. Observances sometimes take place in monasteries, where people read the Parinibbana Sutta, one of the Buddhist texts that describes the Buddha's final days.
