Trace Haythorn
Executive Director
Thank you to so many of you who reached out to offer the ACPE office staff support as we settle into our new space. Like all moves, some piles of things without an identified "home"  are stacked here and there around the space. But for the most part, we are in and fully operational.

Perhaps one of my favorite aspects of the new space is the view. At one angle I can view Kennesaw Mountain and the Georgia Tech stadium; the other direction I see the Mercedes Benz stadium and the downtown office towers. And if you look due west out of our windows, you see the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coke, and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, at the north end of Centennial Olympic Park. Make no mistake: ACPE's work resides in the heart of things.

During this month when we celebrate Black history, we can see dozens of school buses lining up to tour the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. Tourists and businesspeople, as well as locals, come to experience the interactive exhibit of the civil and human rights struggles of the past and the present.

Cecelia Walker
Certification Commission Chair
The Certification Commission is excited about the great work that is happening in our ACPE centers as CECs enter the process and are preparing for certification. We have learned a great deal as we continue to engage with portfolios and everyone who is in the process.

There are a few important updates that I want to share with everyone. These are incorporated in the Certification Manual and are also listed on the Updates to the Manual page.

Insights from brain studies in recent decades have captured the public's imagination and touched on virtually every dimension of human experience, from love and friendships, to trauma and addictions, to our confidence in free will, to our experiences of the transcendent and our trust in reason. Increasingly the neurosciences are confirming and challenging many of our most cherished notions of what it means to be human. In this workshop, taking place on February 28, 2020, 9am-3pm, we will explore themes in recent brain research, including empathy, memory and trauma, story, ritual, and religious experiences.

Weekly Highlights
This Week's Reflection
The theme of the book and film "Wonder" is "choose kind." In this world today, these words seem not just necessary but prophetic. Here's a poem that captures a moment where kindness prevailed:
Somebody's Mother
by Mary Dow Brine

The woman was old and ragged and gray
And bent with the chill of the Winter's day.
The street was wet with a recent snow
And the woman's feet were aged and slow.
She stood at the crossing and waited long,
Alone, uncared for, amid the throng
Of human beings who passed her by
Nor heeded the glance of her anxious eye.
Down the street with laughter and shout,
Glad in the freedom of 'school let out,'
Came the boys like a flock of sheep,
Hailing the snow piled white and deep.
Past the woman so old and gray
Hastened the children on their way.
Nor offered a helping hand to her-
So meek, so timid, afraid to stir
Lest the carriage wheels or the horses' feet
Should crowd her down in the slippery street.
At last came one of the merry troop,
The gayest lad of all the group;
He paused beside her and whispered low,
"I'll help you cross, if you wish to go."
Her aged hand on his strong young arm
She placed, and so, without hurt or harm,
He guided the trembling feet along,
Proud that his own were firm and strong.
Then back again to his friends he went,
His young heart happy and well content.
"She's somebody's mother, boys, you know,
For all she's aged and poor and slow,
And I hope some fellow will lend a hand
To help my mother, you understand,
If ever she's poor and old and grey,
And her own dear boy is far away."
"Somebody's mother" bowed low her head
In her home that night, and the prayer she said
Was, "God be kind to the noble boy,
Who is somebody's son, and pride and joy!"

Some of the most powerful images have within them elements that are overlooked, largely because of the focal point of the image. In honor of Black History Month, we share the following article which highlights one such neglected aspect of a photo: the fifth African American man in the iconic photo of the four young med who sat at the Greensboro lunch counter sixty years ago. Here's his story:

February 21
Maha Shivaratri (Hinduism)
Also known as the "Great Night of Shiva," this day celebrates Lord Shiva, one of the great Hindu deities, with a day of fasting, an all-night vigil, and offerings of leaves from the Bilva tree - a tree of great medicinal value that was loved by Lord Shiva.

February 23
Transfiguration Sunday (Christianity)
Transfiguration Sunday, celebrated on the last Sunday before Lent, marks the day that Jesus was "transfigured" on the mountain. His appearance became radiant, and he was joined by both Moses and Elijah. The disciples who were with him saw him in this dazzling glory.

Meatfare Sunday (Orthodox Christianity)
Traditionally, this is the last day that Orthodox Christians eat meat before commencing their fast, which lasts until Easter.
