We hope this time finds you well. As the ACPE Board of Directors, we have been aware of members' thoughts and concerns about various transitions within the organization. We hear you. And we can empathize with your thoughts and concerns. You elected each member of the board, and we want you to know that we honor your voice. We feel your passion and commitment. ACPE continues to thrive because of your dedication and loyalty. We sincerely thank you for your reflection and input during this season. The recent transitions within ACPE have been difficult and taxing for us, as well. We have had to make some tough decisions after deep reflection, discernment, and prayer. We have also realized the growing pains for us as a board in relation to the membership and are aware of the need to maintain communication about activities within ACPE.

For the last few years, I brought CPE groups into a maximum-security state prison, Minnesota Correctional Facility - Lino Lakes, to learn Restorative Justice Practices. The CPE peers would drive to this prison on six Fridays in the early morning hours to enter at 7:30 AM to learn from incarcerated leaders. They learned not only about crime and punishment, but also about harm and repair. The incarcerated leaders would teach us, and then we would go out to practice restorative justice principles in our ministries and in our families. The next week we explore the shifts as they occurred within us and our relationships. We loved these units. In the fall of 2018, a dream came true. The Foundation for ACPE and an individual donor together gave us funding to offer a unit inside the prison. I recruited four pastors who had completed CPE units with me before, and then we interviewed the leaders of the Lino Lakes Restorative Justice program. We chose four of the incarcerated leaders to join us in the unit of CPE for the full 400 hours.

Is your team interested in developing an interprofessional education curriculum related to palliative care? The University of Louisville Interdisciplinary Program for Palliative Care and Chronic Illness has received funding to assist faculty teams in their efforts to develop such curricula and teaching activities. This national training program, iPEX (InterProfessional Education eXchange), offers training, mentoring and resources to selected teams. Teams selected in 2018 and 2019 found the mentoring and workshop beneficial and are already making progress on the projects they developed.
You are invited to form a team and apply for this national training program. Funded by the National Cancer Institute (R25CA203637), iPEX has research components and IRB approval. Participants will be involved in a series of webinars, attend a skill development workshop and will receive mentoring from an experienced faculty team. Grant funds will cover all materials as well as most travel, housing and some meals. Eight to 10 interprofessional teams of 3-5 health science faculty will be selected in 2020.
Application is now open through April 30, 2020 or until enrollment limits are reached.
For more information about iPEX, the InterProfessional Education eXchange: A National Program to Advance Interprofessional Education in Cancer Care, visit this website: http://iPEXproject.org/ or contact iPEX@louisville.edu.

Insights from brain studies in recent decades have captured the public's imagination and touched on virtually every dimension of human experience, from love and friendships, to trauma and addictions, to our confidence in free will, to our experiences of the transcendent and our trust in reason. Increasingly the neurosciences are confirming and challenging many of our most cherished notions of what it means to be human. In this workshop, taking place on February 28, 2020, 9am-3pm, we will explore themes in recent brain research, including empathy, memory and trauma, story, ritual, and religious experiences.
ACPE: The Standard for Spiritual Care and Education is an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7004. ACPE is solely responsible for sponsored programs, including the awarding of NBCC credit.

We keep hearing stories of stranger and stranger weather around the country. I remember as a child in north Texas those rare moments when snow might come for a visit. Even the slightest amount could lead to closings. This poem captures those moments beautifully, a time I loved as a child and work to enjoy as an adult:

School Closings by Joyce Sutphen
The 10 o'clock news predicts it- winter warnings and watches in lavender and pink, and there we are at the edge of the deepest purple.
Sometime in the middle of the night, I wake and stumble through the dark to look out onto the deck, the driveway, the street. Everything is white, shagged with snow.
One must have that mind, I know, to be able to go back to sleep and wake before dawn to listen to the school closings, the litany of town names reeled off
in alphabetical order, the announcer enunciating each one: Albany, Alden, Amery. Annandale, Anoka-Hennepin, Belgrade-Brooten- Elrosa, Belle Plaine, Benson, Blooming Prairie
and all the way through to Waconia, Waseca, Watertown-Mayer, Zumbrota-Mazeppa- and (this just in!): Classes at Happy Hummus Montessori School are also cancelled today.

Early in our evolution of this newsletter, we included videos from "Kid President." And then he disappeared for several years. Well, a couple of months ago Robbie and Brad, the guys behind the series, posted an update. And it looks like a whole new series is on the way, dedicated to making the world more awesome. Folks in pediatric settings are strongly encouraged to give this a watch! Here you go:

Shrove Tuesday (Western Christianity)
A day of penitence as well as the last chance to feast before Lent begins. Also known as Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday and Carnival Day as this day is observed in many ways worldwide. Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the beginning of Lent, during which Christians are supposed to examine their lives, confess their sins, and receive advice on mending their ways - as the time of Lent represents purification. In Old English, the word "shrove" referred to the act of listening intently to someone and giving advice. The French term for this day, Mardi Gras, means Fat Tuesday, which is said to come from the custom the French had of using up all the fats they had in the house for cooking, since the food during Lent's time of "fast and abstinence" would entail leaner cuisine. The fat would be baked into rich meals on Mardi Gras, and often what was cooked ended up being a pancake of sorts; thus the custom still observed in some parts of the western world of eating pancakes on the day before Lent.
February 26
Ash Wednesday (Western Christianity)
The first day of Lent for Western Christian churches, a 40-day period of spiritual preparation for Easter, not counting Sundays. In the Western Church, Lent - the fasting season marking Jesus' time in the wilderness - commences with Ash Wednesday. Many Christians attend church, where their foreheads are marked with ashes in the form of the cross. The ashes consist of the burnt remains of palms blessed on Palm Sunday the previous year. The cross of ash symbolizes belonging to Jesus Christ and reminds people of their human mortality.
February 26-29
Ayyam-I-Ha or Intercalary Days (Bahá'Ã)
The Ayyám-i-ha, or "Days of Ha" are devoted to spiritual preparation for the fast, celebrating, hospitality, charity and gift giving. They are celebrated the four days, five in leap year, before the last month of the Bahá'à year by inserting days into the calendar in order to maintain their solar calendar. These are days of preparation for the Fast; days of hospitality, charity, ministering to the poor and sick, and giving of presents.
March 1
Cheesefare Sunday (Orthodox Christianity)
Also known as the "Sunday of Forgiveness," this day often reflects on Adam and Eve and their exile from the Garden of Eden, emphasizing the human fall into sin and separation from God. This reminder prepares Orthodox Christians for the intense fasting of Lent.
March 2
Clean Monday (Eastern Christianity)
The beginning of Great Lent for Eastern Christian churches, which starts 40 days before Orthodox Easter (Pascha), counting Sundays. On this day, referred to as "Clean Monday," Orthodox Christians leave behind sinful attitudes and certain foods as they prepare for the Great Lent. This is a seven-week period of fasting to prepare for Orthodox Easter, the greatest feast of the year.
March 2-20
Fast of Ala (Baha'i)
The Baha'i calendar is comprised of 19 months of 19 days each. The fast of Ala occurs during the last month of the Baha'i year, when Baha'is fast from sun up to sun down. All healthy individuals between the ages of 15 and 70 participate in the fast, which is done in spiritual preparation for the New Year, Naw Ruz.
