I recently sat down with Amy Canosa, Certified Educator at Duke Raleigh Hospital in Raleigh, NC. Amy is the Convener of the Alliance of Baptists CoP. I wanted to learn more about how that CoP has been working with racial equity over the past few years.

On June 22, 2020, President Trump signed an executive order that suspends the issuance of all new temporary worker visas effective immediately. The USCIS summarized the order as follows: "
This [proclamation] does not affect those currently working in the U.S. on valid H-1B or similar visas. The proclamation also does not prevent individuals in possession of valid visas prior to the effective date of the proclamation from entering or re-entering the country, if they have been abroad, provided they have not otherwise rendered themselves inadmissible."
The membership of ACPE, the people of its member institutions, and its students have long benefited from the contributions of international students in our CPE programs and our international students as they are immersed in the historic traditions of the spiritual care movement. If the President's executive order stands, it will be a loss for all of us.

As ACPE is in the process of transitioning to a new database, quarterly billing for accreditation fees for the period 4/1/2020 to 6/30/2020 will be delayed by one month. We expect to send the invoices out by August 15, 2020. This will not change any other quarterly billing.
Thank you for your understanding and patience as we improved our systems to better serve you. If you questions about the quarterly billing, please send them to accounting@acpe.edu.

#ACPEproud, August 3-7, 2020, is a week-long celebration, education, and advocacy event to encourage support of clinical pastoral education, spiritually integrated psychotherapy, and the spiritual care community. ACPE is proud of our students, graduates, and members.
#ACPEproud will highlight the meaningful ways our members and accredited centers heal, strengthen, and transform people and communities in the US and across the globe.
During the week, ACPE will recognize our newly certified members and newly accredited centers, celebrate our awardees, install a new board chair, and honor our members who died during the last year. Throughout the campaign, ACPE will provide tools for you to share with your institutions and communities about the positive effects of spiritual care for patients and society.

While the following precedes a collection of poetry, the text itself is so poetic and responds to perhaps the most important question of this moment in time: how then shall we live? From the Preface to Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman:
"This is what you shall do; Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body."
"This is what you shall do..." by Walt Whitman, from the preface of Leaves of Grass. Public domain.

These days have lost any sense of ebb and flow. They are more like the waves at the beach when a storm is approaching - wave after wave, little time to breathe, no sense of when it might end. The tools of mindfulness are not only important during this painful season, but for some they are lifesaving. Here's a simple meditation practice from the folks at "The Mindful Leader." They also have many other resources you may find helpful:

Ullambana/Obon (Buddhism)
Ullambana, a Sanskrit term that means "hanging upside down and suffering," honors the spirits of past ancestors and strives to relieve aching souls from suffering. Obon, the Japanese transliteration of Ullambana, is only three days and varies from region to region-July in the eastern region and August in the western region.

Saint Vladimir's Day (Christianity)
Saint Vladimir, celebrated on this day in Orthodox and Catholic traditions, was born an illegitimate prince, who defeated his stepbrothers to become the sole leader of Russia in 980 AD. Known for his barbarism and immorality in his younger years, Vladimir later became interested in the Christian faith and converted himself and the people of Russia. He is the patron saint of Russia.

ACPE: The Standard for Spiritual Care & Education
ACPE is the standard for spiritual care and education. Our diverse membership includes Certified CPE Educators, Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapists, Spiritual Care Professionals and Practitioners, Pastoral Counselors, Chaplains, Faith Communities, and Seminaries. Our multi-disciplinary, multi-faith, multi-racial community of professionals provides education, connection, and formation through continuing education, networking, and leadership development.
ACPE is the premier, Department of Education recognized, organization that provides the highest quality CPE programs for spiritual care professionals of any faith and in any setting. We do this through a rigorous accreditation and certification process for centers and educators that provide CPE.
The depth of our training enables students to realize their full potential to strengthen the spiritual health of people in their care as well as themselves.
ACPE members are actively engaged in a wide variety of professional development activities including communities of practice, conferences, spiritual care research, and informal networking. We are more than just an association: we are a movement committed to the transformation of the human suffering. Our opportunities for formation and community enrich our member's work of healing and transforming people and communities in the US and across the globe.
