Over the last week, I've enjoyed spending time with my family at Cloudland Canyon State Park, near the five corners section of northwest Georgia. We hiked, biked, cooked and laughed, all while living essentially "unplugged" for several days. I come away from the time deeply grateful for such an opportunity, profoundly aware of the privilege that makes such a trip possible, and very thankful for a team that doesn't miss a beat while I'm away!
It gave me time to reflect on the last few months, and I am quite simply in awe of all our members have experienced since February. In partnering with the
Chaplaincy Innovation Lab
and
Transforming Chaplaincy
, many of our members have provided leadership for all of those serving in healthcare contexts to address the ever-evolving protocols related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of these resources are linked to our
website
, and it appears they will be relevant for months to come.

Little did we know the magnitude and effects of the pandemic when we announced our research plans in a
webinar in February.
Since many CPE centers expressed interest in being part of this study, our team considered how to be good stewards of this exciting opportunity to partner with you for a nation-wide study advancing our field. Today is the deadline for those wishing to participate.

We understand that this is a special time because of COVID-19. So in advance we wish to thank you for your time. We are hoping that you will contribute to a study aimed to better understand the role of healthcare chaplains in assisting with advance care planning and end of life discussions with patients and families.
The proposed study aims to describe ACP practices among board certified healthcare chaplains in order to inform policy and practice discussions on the role and standards for high quality ACP facilitated by chaplains. This study will the largest on-line survey with board certified healthcare chaplains in the U.S. on advance care planning and end of life care. As a healthcare chaplain, we'd appreciate your help by completing an
on-line survey. Your survey responses will help us to better understand the role of healthcare chaplains in advance care planning. The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete, and your responses will be confidential.
Should you have any questions about the research or survey (or would like to receive the
results from the study), you can contact the Principal Investigator,
Dr. Jung Kwak.
|
You are invited to complete a brief survey, taking up to ten minutes, about spiritual competencies in graduate-level spiritual education. The results will help us to better understand how spiritual care currently is included in institutional curricula nationwide.
If you have any questions about this educational project email Trace Haythorn or Christina Puchalski.

Do you know a student who has written a powerful reflection about their experience with CPE? Are you a current ACPE student who would like to share your experiences from your time with CPE?
If so, please send your reflections to us! Email your reflection with a current headshot to foundation@acpe.edu. Reflections may be published in the ACPE newsletter and in promotional materials to help tell of the transformative work of spiritual care education.

Thank you to all educator who responded to our survey about summer units. Over the past few weeks, we have had an increase in phone calls from students searching for programs that are having summer units, so we are happy to share the list of centers that responded "yes" to our survey. We hope that this will assist students looking for CPE units this summer. As this information was provided to us by the centers, we suggest that prior to sending an application that you contact the center to confirm their plans for the summer unit. Center contact information may be found in our
online directory on the website.
For ACPE Certified Educators, we know that things are changing rapidly, and often on a daily basis, so if your center's plans have changed and you want to be added to the list or need to be removed, please email
Marc Medwed, Associate Executive Director.
We appreciate the work you are doing, now more than ever, and wish you all good health.

While he was writing of a different time and different circumstances, Kwame Dawes' words inform much of what is known today. They name so much, and they offer hope. May they be a part of our way forward from this time:
Requiem By Kwame Dawes
I sing requiem for the dead, caught in that mercantilistic madness. We have not built lasting monuments of severe stone facing the sea, the watery tomb, so I call these songs shrines of remembrance where faithful descendants may stand and watch the smoke curl into the sky in memory of those devoured by the cold Atlantic. In every blues I hear riding the dank swamp I see the bones picked clean in the belly of the implacable sea. Do not tell me it is not right to lament, do not tell me it is tired. If we don't, who will recall in requiem the scattering of my tribe? In every reggae chant stepping proud against Babylon I hear a blue note of lament, sweet requiem for the countless dead, skanking feet among shell, coral, rainbow adze, webbed feet, making as if to lift, soar, fly into new days.

Before coming to ACPE, I taught a course in the theory and practices of nonviolence. It informs many of the values and commitments today's social movements. While many of the images we have seen in recent days have been of violence, Steve Pavey, a photojournalist, captures images of the beauty and the passion that are the heart and soul of so many social movements. Take a look (you may even recognize some folks):

Miguel Santamaria is an ACPE Certified Educator from Florida. He wrote a poem entitled, "Restless."
O rest, holy rest...
You have been called a space between two notes,
which are always in discord...
You have been called a space that enlightens our response,
when situations make us only roar...

June 15 Apostles fast begins (Orthodox Christianity) The Apostles fast lasts 14 days in 2020. The Holy Apostles Fasting duration varies every year. It begins on Monday following Sunday of all Saints and ends on June 29. It may last from zero days, if Pascha falls on May 3 or later to twenty nine days, if Pascha falls on April 4 to May 2.
June 16 Guru Arjan Dev Martyrdom (Sikhism) This day commemorates Guru Arjan Dev, the first Sikh martyr. Until the early 1600s, Sikhs had a peaceful history, but the new Mughal Emperor, Jahangir, was a Muslim who had Guru Arjan Dev arrested and tortured. A few days later, when taken to bathe in the Ravi River, Guru Arjan Dev disappeared.
June 19 New Church Day (Swedenborgian Christianity) The 18th century theologian and scientist Emanuel Swedenborg founded the New Church after a course of divinely inspired revelations. He wrote 35 volumes, which he called The True Christian Religion, to reveal hidden meaning in the Bible and address the mysteries of human life. This day celebrates the book's publication in 1770.
Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Catholic Christianity) This feast day commemorates Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque's (1647-1690) visions of Jesus and his instruction to her that she serve as the instrument for spreading devotion to his sacred heart. The feast celebrates Jesus's gift of the Eucharist and urges believers to pray for the sins of the world.
June 21 Solstice Litha (Neo-Paganism) Also known as the Summer Solstice, Litha is the celebration of the arrival of summer- when the days are most full of daylight, and there is abundance and fertility in the earth.
