The Long View and the Short
Patrick McCoy
Writing about a vision for the Foundation for ACPE in days like ours is a bit like planning to ride dressage on a bucking bronco. There is a particular course we want to take towards goals that are in principal achievable, but our ride has a mind of its own, and it is not amenable to precision guidance.

Our ride, in our case, is not equestrian but financial, and though we have been through some profound ups and downs in the value of ACPE's endowment this past year, the turbulence and losses induced most recently by the COVID-19 pandemic are truly disorienting. However, even though the novel circumstances (to understate the matter a wee bit) bring both uncertainty and constraint to our near-term planning, the long term fundamentals of who we are, what we do, and where we are going remain constant.

Accreditation Commission Continues to Respond to Center's Needs during COVID-19 Outbreak
Considering the current situation with COVID-19, many centers are limiting in-person exposure and visits, which create challenges for students seeking to complete their clinical hour requirement for their unit of CPE.  However, opportunities for centers and our students to provide spiritual care for patients and their families can look different than the traditional model of in-person visits.

Virtual Meetings and COVID-19
ACPE is pleased to offer five dedicated Zoom lines for member's use. As we each navigate the new realities brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, we continue to see an exponential increase in requests for Zoom meetings. In order to provide an equitable benefit for everyone, we ask for member cooperation with the following:
  1. When possible, please submit your online request with at least 72 hours' notice.

  2. At this time, we are unable to fulfill new requests for recurring meetings. We ask that members only complete requests for single meetings.

  3. As a reminder, we only schedule virtual meetings for up to three hours.

Would it work? Could we be 13 time zones and 30 hours flying time away from family and friends? What would it be like to live in a city that is the most remote, large city in the world, closer to Singapore and Jakarta than Sydney or Melbourne? They speak English but say things like "G'day" and "How you going?" They abbreviate everything and drive on the left side of the road. These were just a few of the questions that my wife Jan and I had for a year, as we contemplated moving and offering CPE at the Royal Perth Hospital, as their very first "International Pastoral Education Fellow" with CPE Educator Michael Hertz. We made the decision once the housing was arranged for a two-bedroom apartment with a view of the Swan River and the Central Business District.

CPE & Emotional Intelligence: Is there an Association?
The ACPE Research Community of Practice (CoP) and Transforming Chaplaincy are launching a study of CPE and emotional intelligence (EI). The study aims to (a) examine EI and changes in EI associated with participation in CPE and (b) foster CPE-related research among CPE educators. To learn more, please watch the webinar recording on the ACPE YouTube Channel. We're making this information available to those who are interested since not everyone was able to register or join us.

ACPE is continually looking for ways to bring value to our members. We value your input as we look to make improvements to the ACPE website. You are invited to give your feedback before today at 5pm ET.

ACPE Continues to Offer Services & Support
Trace Haythorn
Dear ACPE Members,

I hope you are reading this from your home; if not, I hope that you are supported in taking appropriate precautions as we learn to navigate this sudden and painful pandemic reality. I'm writing to let you know that even as we adjust, your ACPE staff is working remotely, striving to advance the work of the association, maximizing the use of digital tools to keep on top of your emerging needs as well as the ongoing needs of the organization. We know it will take some time to cultivate the balance and rhythms of new work practices, but please know our team is doing all we can to support you in this extraordinary time.

With a heavy heart, the Partners for Professional Excellence in Spiritual Care (ACPE, APC, CASC/ACSS, NACC, NAJC)
decided to cancel the  20/20 Vision: The Future of Spiritual Care  conference in Cleveland, OH due to the ongoing healthcare crisis and COVID-19.

The partners are deeply saddened by the need to cancel our conference, and we have done so only after consulting with our boards, the host city, conference center, and hotels. With the ongoing concerns about COVID-19 and the indefinite ban on gatherings in Ohio, along with the recommendation from the  CDC  to limit meetings to less than 50 people, it is impossible for us to continue to prepare for this conference.

COVID-19 Preparedness
COVID-19
ACPE is actively monitoring the COVID-19 (commonly known as the coronavirus) situation. The health and safety - of our students, members, and the community we serve - are our paramount priority.

We are committed to providing updates and information as the COVID-19 situation continues via email and the website. We encourage you to monitor the CDC website for additional information.

If you have any questions or need further information, please contact the office at (404) 320-1472 or acpe@acpe.edu.

Weekly Highlights
This Week's Reflection
When my children were young, I would read with them and then sing one of three different hymns as they drifted off to sleep. While I wanted them to feel safe and comforted, I also felt the same in being with them. It is in that spirit that we offer this week's poem in a time such as this:

Listening for Your Name
by David Graham

As a father steals into his child's half-lit bedroom
slowly, quietly, standing long and long
counting the breaths before finally slipping
back out, taking care not to wake her,

and as that night-lit child is fully awake the whole
time, with closed eyes, measured breathing,
savoring a delicious blessing she couldn't
name but will remember her whole life,

how often we feel we're being watched over,
or that we're secretly looking in on the ones
we love, even when they are far away,
or even as they are lost in the sleep

no one wakes from-what we know
and what we feel can fully coincide, like love
and worry, like taking care in full silence
and secrecy, like darkness and light together.

Several memes are going around about the need to care for extroverts during this time of quarantine. In that spirit, we offer the following ideas from USA Today:

March 25
Feast of the Annunciation of Virgin Mary (Christianity)
This day commemorates when the angel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she would bear a child, Jesus. The feast of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is celebrated with prayers and church services.

Hindu New Year / Ugadi (Hinduism)
Ugadi is the Hindu New Year, often celebrated with a ritual bath, prayers, and the eating of pachhadi: six flavors that represent six different life experiences. There's bitter, tang, sour, spice, sweet, and salty, to represent sadness, happiness, anger, fear, disgust and surprise.

March 25-April 2
Ramayana Week (Hinduism)
Commencing with the Hindu New Year, Ramayana Week celebrates the appearance of Sri Ram, a Hindu Lord. Hindus worship Sri Ram by fasting, singing songs and dancing, and reading from the Ramayana text.

March 28
KhordadSal (Zoroastrian)
The Zoroastrian celebration of the birth of Zoroaster, the founder of the Zoroastrianism religion. The holiday is specifically celebrated in India and Iran, immediately following the Persian new year, Nowrúz. Khordad Sal is the birthday celebration of Prophet Zarathustra, the founder of Zoroastrianism. Considered to be one of the most important holidays on the Zoroastrian calendar, the day is spent feasting, wearing new clothes, displaying fresh flowers and gathering in fire temples for prayers.
