A couple of weeks ago I attended the East Central Community of Practice Spring Gathering at Hueston Woods in Ohio. The East Central CoP is one of our CoPs that drew from the history and strength of the old region and has weathered the transition to become a vibrant and engaged CoP.
The gathering had a robust program based on new research on trauma. There was time for student consultations, fellowship and laughter over meals, and intention in celebrating the transitions of members present.
In recent months I have been diving into the question: what makes a vibrant CoP? What factors enable a CoP to make a difference to the life of its members and to the life of the organization? I saw a few of these factors on display in the ECCoP.

ACPE, with its Strategic Partners, is actively monitoring COVID-19 (commonly known as the coronavirus) developments. As the accreditor of CPE programs that operate primarily in health care settings, ACPE is concerned about the impact of COVID-19 on our centers and the welfare of our members and students. Your health, safety, and well-being are our first priorities.
In your role as spiritual care providers, you and your students may be in direct contact with patients and other caregivers exposed to COVID-19. During these times of increased anxiety, your presence provides needed reassurance for patients and staff. Please adhere to the recommended safety guidelines and remember your own need for care. While we hold you in our thoughts and prayers during this time, we are also planning contingencies to ensure your safety.

As interest in population health and community wellness grows among healthcare organizations, it is both intriguing and fitting to think about the possibilities for integrating spiritual care at this different level. Exalta Health, a non-profit clinic serving uninsured and underserved people in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has been providing spiritual care for its primary care medical and dental patients for a number of years. Through this webinar on March 12, Staff Chaplain Kristen Meyer, and President Emeritus Bill Paxton, will share the unique opportunities and challenges they've encountered as they've integrated spiritual care at Exalta Health.

We hope this time finds you well. As the ACPE Board of Directors, we have been aware of members' thoughts and concerns about various transitions within the organization. We hear you. And we can empathize with your thoughts and concerns. You elected each member of the board, and we want you to know that we honor your voice. We feel your passion and commitment. ACPE continues to thrive because of your dedication and loyalty. We sincerely thank you for your reflection and input during this season. The recent transitions within ACPE have been difficult and taxing for us, as well. We have had to make some tough decisions after deep reflection, discernment, and prayer. We have also realized the growing pains for us as a board in relation to the membership and are aware of the need to maintain communication about activities within ACPE.

For the last few years, I brought CPE groups into a maximum-security state prison, Minnesota Correctional Facility - Lino Lakes, to learn Restorative Justice Practices. The CPE peers would drive to this prison on six Fridays in the early morning hours to enter at 7:30 AM to learn from incarcerated leaders. They learned not only about crime and punishment, but also about harm and repair. The incarcerated leaders would teach us, and then we would go out to practice restorative justice principles in our ministries and in our families. The next week we explore the shifts as they occurred within us and our relationships. We loved these units. In the fall of 2018, a dream came true. The Foundation for ACPE and an individual donor together gave us funding to offer a unit inside the prison. I recruited four pastors who had completed CPE units with me before, and then we interviewed the leaders of the Lino Lakes Restorative Justice program. We chose four of the incarcerated leaders to join us in the unit of CPE for the full 400 hours.

Is your team interested in developing an interprofessional education curriculum related to palliative care? The University of Louisville Interdisciplinary Program for Palliative Care and Chronic Illness has received funding to assist faculty teams in their efforts to develop such curricula and teaching activities. This national training program, iPEX (InterProfessional Education eXchange), offers training, mentoring and resources to selected teams. Teams selected in 2018 and 2019 found the mentoring and workshop beneficial and are already making progress on the projects they developed.
You are invited to form a team and apply for this national training program. Funded by the National Cancer Institute (R25CA203637), iPEX has research components and IRB approval. Participants will be involved in a series of webinars, attend a skill development workshop and will receive mentoring from an experienced faculty team. Grant funds will cover all materials as well as most travel, housing and some meals. Eight to 10 interprofessional teams of 3-5 health science faculty will be selected in 2020.
Application is now open through April 30, 2020 or until enrollment limits are reached.
For more information about iPEX, the InterProfessional Education eXchange: A National Program to Advance Interprofessional Education in Cancer Care, visit this website: http://iPEXproject.org/ or contact iPEX@louisville.edu.

The Certification Commission is excited about the great work that is happening in our ACPE centers as CECs enter the process and are preparing for certification. We have learned a great deal as we continue to engage with portfolios and everyone who is in the process.
|
During our time together, ACPE with its partners will: share leading practices in research, professional development, and credentialing; strengthen professional relations; focus our time, talents and resources on those most vulnerable; and grow our practical and professional skills.

Join us for New Accreditation Process Q&A Sessions. The sessions are your opportunity to ask anything about the new process or building your center's accreditation portfolio.
Dates are currently posted through the new year. The sessions are 12:00pm to 1:00pm eastern time on the assigned days. The number of participants for each session is limited to ensure individual questions are addressed.

A Poem for Reflection: Every once in a while, we come across a poem that cuts across the generations and makes us pause, reflect, and wonder. This poem is just such an offering:

What I Can't Tell My Son
by Maria Mazziotti Gillan That I wait for his call every Sunday night, though I pretend to myself that I don't care. I have lost the easy way I once had with him, the nights I sat at the edge of his bed and we'd talk in the soft dark of his bedroom until he fell asleep, that time when I felt so close to him we could have been in one skin.
But now his own children grown, it's as though a stranger has come to inhabit his body. I struggle to find a story that will make him laugh or some anecdote that will interest him. I can't tell my son that I cry often after these calls, can't tell him how much I need to hear his voice, can't tell him I can still feel his high cheekbones under my hand, still remember his heavy head leaning against me as I read to him when he was a child.
I wonder what words he holds back. Is he sad, too, when he hangs up the phone? Yet, even these 10-minute phone calls, these painful, awkward attempts at touch, even these I do not want to give up, so that if he were five minutes late with his call, I'd worry and when the call is over, such loss I feel, such loss, this son I will never stop loving, though I am afraid sometimes that if he were to walk into a room I would no longer recognize him, and I do not have the courage to ask him if these calls are as painful and necessary for him as they are for me.
What I Can't Tell My Son by Maria Mazziotti Gillan from What Blooms in Winter. NYQ Books, 2015.

Amidst so much anxiety, intensity and outright hostility in our world today, many of us want something the feels wonderfully average. Here's a reflection on just such a space:

March 9
Magha Puja (Buddhism)
Also known as Sangha Day, it commemorates the spontaneous assembly of 1,250 disciples, completely enlightened monks, in the historical Buddha's presence.
Purim (Judaism)
Purim is a Jewish festival, beginning at sundown, that recognizes the deliverance of the Persian Jews from destruction during the reign of King Ahasuerus. This story, recorded in the book of Esther, is read aloud in Synagogues on Purim, and adults and children often wear costumes commemorating the characters.

ACPE: The Standard for Spiritual Care & Education
|
ACPE is the premier, Department of Education-recognized organization that provides the highest quality CPE programs for spiritual care professionals of any faith and in any setting. We do this through a rigorous accreditation and certification process for centers and educators that provide CPE. The depth of our training enables students to realize their full potential to strengthen the spiritual health of people in their care as well as themselves.
ACPE is also the professional home of a growing number of spiritually integrated psychotherapists and pastoral counselors. ACPE supports Psychotherapist and Practitioner members through continuing education programs, networking, and leadership development.
