I write to you this week aware that this would have been the time that many of us gathered with our chaplain colleagues in Cleveland for our annual conference. Even before I came to work for ACPE (and especially since!) the conference has long been something that helped to set the rhythm of the year for me. Coming toward the end of a program year when my own energy would likely be flagging, connecting with colleagues has always been a shot in the arm. Most years I returned from the conference refreshed and inspired, grounded and connected, with at least one new idea to enhance my practice.
Not being with you in person is one of many griefs of this season. In the scheme of things, it's not the biggest or the loudest grief. But I miss being with those of you who speak the same language as me; who understand the cannon that has shaped me; and who have walked with me through periods of profound transformation as wise and trusted friends. Being together in person has always been a way to connect with some core aspects of my identity as a pastor and an educator.

Due to the challenges many of our centers are facing with COVID-19 as well as concerns related to the health of our members, the Accreditation Commission has decided to postpone all in-person site visits until after January 1, 2021.

Thank you for making #GivingTuesdayNow a success!
|
#GivingTuesdayNow was an overwhelming success because of you! We exceeded our goal and raised over $7,000 from 65 members and friends. We also welcomed several new monthly donors into the ACPE Sustainer's Circle.
Because of your generosity on #GivingTuesdayNow, ACPE can provide resources that help our programs adapt to meet the critical needs caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. We will share more information about how we will accomplish this goal through this year's Innovative Program Awards grants cycle. Stay tuned for more information.
We are all in this together. Thank you for standing with your colleagues during this time!
|
Thank you for your patience during the planned website outage yesterday and today.
The site is active again for you to enroll in CPE units, register CPE credit, access directories, pay invoices, register for events, and access SharePoint.

New Reflective Practice Editors Announced
|
|
|
The Editorial Board of the Reflective Practice Journal would like to thank the Rev. Dr. Scott Sullender for six years of creative leadership as the editor of the Journal. He has worked tirelessly to develop engaging topics for each volume, to find a wide range of professionals to address those topics, and then to work with the written submissions to edit them for publication. Dr. Sullender's leadership has continued the legacy of the Journal to offer critical, personal, and forward-thinking reflection on the work of supervised ministry. We are deeply indebted to Dr. Sullender for his efforts in guiding us through the preparation of the fortieth volume of the Journal and its predecessor and forward into a new era of reflection.
As Dr. Sullender steps away from the role of Editor of the Reflective Practice Journal, the Editorial Board is pleased to announce our new Co-Editors, Rev. Dr. Matthew Floding and Rev. Nancy Wood. Together, the Rev. Dr. Floding and Rev. Wood bring years of supervisor training and editing work as well as connections to a wide variety of practitioners in the field of supervised ministry. Each is excited to join the process of producing high quality writing and reflecting on this work and look forward to working together as a team to continue the creative and visionary work that the Reflective Practice Journal has offered throughout the years.

In the midst of these uncertain times, many of us are hungry for information - information that can inform our decisions, help us process what we're experiencing, and connect us with those around us.
The Professional Well-Being Committee is working to gather such resources and make them available to our members. Here you will find articles, videos, and reflections that will bolster our resilience and strengthen our practice in the days and weeks ahead.
If you or your Community of Practice has a resource that you would like to submit to share with our members,
please email

This time has an out-of-sync feeling to me. The question is not "WILL this time have lasting impact?" It is rather, "WHAT will the depth and breadth of impact be on our near and extended futures?"
Perhaps like many of you, I have wept reading the stories of both success and failure for frontline healthcare providers, and the generous responses of individuals and groups toward the people caring for the sick. I've made 'community masks' for friends and family. I've mourned when hearing of the deaths of friends' family members and dread the time I will experience the death of a friend or family member. Only history will measure the magnitude of the losses in life and livelihood in the worldwide community.

Two weeks ago, based on a suggestion from members, ACPE sent a survey out to all educators inquiring about their plans for summer units. As you will see in the graphs below, 180 centers responded, which represent 57% of our accredited centers, so a little more than half of our centers are represented here. The centers that responded are spread out geographically, representing the range of centers that are in areas with a high concentration of COVID-19 patients as well as those that have a more moderate concentration. They also represent large and small programs.

Our Research Team wanted to give an update about the CPE & Emotional Intelligence (EI) research study to the ACPE community. Little did we know the magnitude and effects of the pandemic when we announced our research plans in a
webinar in February.
Since many CPE centers expressed interest in being part of this study, our team considered how to be good stewards of this exciting opportunity to partner with you for a nation-wide study advancing our field. We remain committed to this project while fully aware that you are focused on navigating uncertainties in your CPE programs amid the COVID-19 crisis. Therefore, we have made adjustments to the timeline and have extended the opportunity to join the project.

Welcome to the month of May, or have months become a little like days now, vague and blurry in the midst of sheltering in place? So many friends and colleagues have shared how nature has been almost salvific for them during this strange time: the chance to walk under the bluest sky they've seen in years, a hike in the woods amidst the emerging sounds of spring, or a long ride on a bike in places that are often inhabited by cars. This poem captures some of the delights and transitions of this month:
May
By Jonathan Galassi
The backyard apple tree gets sad so soon,
takes on a used-up, feather-duster look
within a week.
The ivy's spring reconnaissance campaign
sends red feelers out and up and down
to find the sun.
Ivy from last summer clogs the pool,
brewing a loamy, wormy, tea-leaf mulch
soft to the touch
and rank with interface of rut and rot.
The month after the month they say is cruel
is and is not.

Last week we shared some resources from our friends at "Sounds True." This week, we offer some free reproduces from the good people at Mindful Leader. This collection seems particularly appropriate for all ACPE members and students in this time. Take a look:

Lag B'Omer (Judaism) (Begins at sundown on the 11th)
Celebrates the end of a divine-sent plague and/or Roman occupation during Rabbi Akiva's lifetime (died c. 135 CE). Lag B'Omer is the 33rd day between the second day of Passover and the holiday of Shavuot. There is altogether a span of 49 days between the two holidays; a time that is traditionally a period of mourning the death of Rabbi Akiba's 24,000 students over 2,000 years ago. By contrast, however, Lag B'Omer is a break in the mourning period and is therefore a time for celebration.
May 13
Midfeast (Eastern Orthodox Church)
A feast day which occurs during the Paschal season in the Eastern Orthodox Church and those Eastern Catholic Churches which follow the Byzantine Rite. Mid-Pentecost celebrates the midpoint between the Feasts of Pascha (Easter) and Pentecost. Specifically, it falls on the 25th day of Pascha. At the feast of Mid-Pentecost, a Small Blessing of the Waters is traditionally performed after the liturgy of the feast.
